Entry fee for Pre-releases increased?

I don't know about other states, but this seems like kind of a problem here in SoCal where you could just drive to Frank and Sons which could be closer or about the same amount of driving to a pre, and get packs for around 2.50 (and that's individually). It jsut makes it really difficult to justify that 30 dollars here. That's almost full retail price now.

How do the people there get a better deal on packs than PTOs?

This still hasn't been answered. I'm curious how much they pay the packs if its so easy to get a box cheaper. PEople are saying they go for the atmosphere, but isn't that just league?

Frank and Sons looks like a flea market environment. Are you sure those packs are not counterfeit? And they haven't been weighed?

Yeah I'm wondering the same thing, $2.50 for a pack is about half of what they go for at Target/Toys R Us and such.

I don't know what the PTOs are getting their boxes for, but when I would run release tournaments for new sets at my local card shop (Clifton), the store owner would sell the boxes at $96 after tax and all the players would split the box(es). I would throw one of my playmats up for raffle and we would draft. If we were to split everything evenly similar to how pre-releases are run, it would be 9 packs for $24. The store was making profit from this, and has been working with me to do drafts like this since NVI came out, so I don't know how PTOs are forced to pay so much more for just the cheap deck boxes and promos.

Did you have to pay for the use of the venue and judge comp? How about the time spent scheduling this event, and while your at it schedule 3 more at the same time and trying to fit everyones schedule together. How much time did you spend filling out the order forms and report forms for Pokemon? Just wondering.

I have attended several Pre-Releases in the past (most of them in the Diamond & Pearl era).

I will most likely go to the Boundaries Crossed one at the local game store.
Even for $30 it's a pretty fun time, especially since you don't see these people at these every week for league.

I still do have an issue with those people who go JUST for the cards.
Never really saw the point of driving long distances, paying your $ and then dropping after the first round.

Plus I don't recall that many times having an actual draft after the fact.
If they did, I only brought enough $ to play in the pre-release & maybe get one starter/lunch.
