well not exactly 2 Million, but close. well over 1 million. i just say that as the general estimate because that was the titles of a number of headlines in the news that week

heres some more exact numbers:
Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire are selling at record breaking pace in Japan. On a Japanese top selling games list (Dengeki Top Selling Games List, week 11/18/02 – 11/24/02), Pokemon Sapphire got first place, and Pokemon Ruby came second. Pokemon Sapphire sold 700,492 copies, and Pokemon Ruby is very close with 672,315. Both games were released on the 21st, meaning these figures does not reflect an entire week of sales since list starts on the 18th. That means these numbers are for the four days it has been released.

To give you an idea exactly how big Ruby/Sapphire sales is in Japan: Two new games also made their debut release on the list’s week of 11/18/02 – 11/24/02. Coming in at #3 is Biohazard 0 at 168,604 copies sold, and #4 is Super Robot Taisen Original Generation at 116,009. Well short of Sapphire’s 700,492. And Ruby’s 672,315.

It had a total of 2,740,909 copies sold in 2002 in Japan, #1 selling game in Japan in 2002, beating 2nd place by over a million units. It was released near the end of November.

EDIT: further down is another article noting 1 Million pre-orders. im not sure if those sales numbers count the pre-orders or not

At least we're sort of getting closer to what I believe to be the best take on portable turn-based combat-style games: Golden Sun. I loved the graphics in that GBA game, and it would be great to see that treatment applied to Pokémon. Imagine spiraling camera moves, dazzling effects, and moving characters. The more you play the more you realize you're just staring at pictures. Golden Sun extended the illusion of reality by having actually engaging fight scenes in the game.

I wouldn't get so excited about graphics =/
It seems the better they make a game's graphics the crappyer they make the actual game -_-;

...and why do you all say there won't be daytime/nighttime? ._.

Well, I didn't say that they definitely aren't in, but from the looks of it, it looks highly unlikely. You'd think they would make that one of the big announcements right off the bat with screens of day and night.

Since there was no indication of night/day elements, one would come to the conclusion that they are absent.

Dangit, I'll bet they keep weather...I think I'd rather have day/night and actual week schedule stuff like in GS than weather.

i love the outside graphics, i didn't want some pixelated polygons for D/P, its just what Dragon Warrior/Quest 7 did on the PS1, 2d/3d.

as for the battle menus, to me it looks just like ru/sa to me, hopefully that changes, and is way more animated, but from the looks of it the attack menus will now be on the bottom screen, i do hope to see some change in the 8 gyms elite 4 route, i want them to add something new, maybe more gyms or a quest after elite 4, an actual tournament or something,

for those that want a radically different gameplay that is what mystery dungeon and ranger are for though.

i wouldnt count it out until its explicitly stated to not be there. especially since the DS has a built in clock and calendar

this is GameFreak, they always keep stuff hidden up their sleeve until the last minute

Golden Sun was overrated. The backgrounds didn't scroll right compared to the characters' positions, and felt very jarring to me.

Anyway, D/P look pretty nice to me based on those screenshots. Like R/S/E but... better?

Hey, Golden Sun was a VERY good game, and I was hooked on it for Ages  (congrats if you get the pun) It had very good graphics too, especially since it was released just a few months after the GBA was.

Of course, my opinions, (along with many others') but anyway, I feel like playing it right now... eheh ^_^

That was sarcasm. He did it to emphasize the rediculous nature of the claim made earlier about better graphics correlating with worse gameplay.

Well, that's going by my own experiance.. =/
(and I didn't think golden sun was all that great, really..)

What I mean is that I find that the games I grew up playing were more fun even though they didn't have pretty graphics (Link's Awakening, etc)
Actually my favorite games are old RPG's for the original gameboy with all their goofy looking graphics glory...

I don't appreciate everyone jumping on me -_-

Golden Sun was severely overrated.

Also, FFX was indeed rather... lacking... compared to previous entries. Except maybe FF2 and FF8. Eww x2.

the graphics in this game are not overly impressive, but then again when was the last time you picked up a hand held Pokemon game and thought "wow!!! awsome graphics!!!!" If you did then you were the only one... Pokemon is more abou tthe game play than the graphics, I hoped for more, but I doubt that the game itself will dissapoint
