Flygon - As a TECH! (I'm not Mad)

I was looking at Flygon (RR) and noticed how it's body is rarely acclaimed. But why can't it be used as a tech to give pokemon with a large retreat cost free retreat.

What do people think?

Yeah, it happens occasionally. It's pretty good, and pretty much everyone knows that it can be used well as a tech. However, when it comes to Stage 2 decks, most people would rather run Dusknoir as a tech or Flygon as the main hitter.

agreeing with Zephyr. Flygon teched is rare and solely reflects the build overall. What I mean is that if the deck can work fine with out it, it's not going to put in unless that person doesn't have anything else, of equal play value, to put in.

There are a few problems.

Some people do use Flygon as a secondary stage 2 line because of Rainbow Float. But it's just that, as a tech, even, free retreat isn't THAT great in practice compared to other Stage 2 techs, like Maternal Comfort or Dark Palm. Whereas these tech cards carry unique abilities, Flygon's free retreat is only neccessary in a deck that focuses on abusing such a thing. Secondly, it's poke-body can be achieved using a simple switch, and 3 Switches versus a 1-1-1 Flygon line or 2 Switches versus a 1-0-1 Flygon line generally has about the same probability.

The additional catch is that you need to have the same energy on Flygon as whatever you're switching with it. In decks focused more on acceleration, this becomes somewhat of a hassle if you want to retreat, as you need to place energy on Flygon and the active pokemon. Otherwise, you need a means to control energy.

Flygon makes some heavy retreat decks more viable (Mamoswine, Steelix,Dsuknoir, etc.), but the flygon tech is usually seen in a stage 2 deck since most run max candies

Wouldn't that commit energy attachements to the Flygon instead of your main attacker though?
