Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Format Change for Next Year - Possible Change for Nats and Worlds!

So with UK nats just over a month away this isn't going to affect UK players at all until worlds.
We'll still have to play with sabledonk in the format - is that right?

Mega Bliss and like 12 more ideas I had for decks become useful. No more Gengar Sf, No Luxray, No More Chomp, No More Dialga, No More Sableye. This has made my day!!!!

HGSS - on means skill and fun, we still will have draw, still have Candy, Flower Shop Lady to recycle, PPs, DCE,Rainbow,Smergle. The format will still be good HGSS on, that just means everyone can play anything they want or still the same thing, but the meta would be wide open. Mew Prime becomes alot more playable, so do Eeveelutions.

Yes, every main archtype now is done, but I dont mind, Jumpliff can get big again thats fine, but at least other decks will still beat it consistently. Ol Glory Day!!!

So, Europe is going to be used as test subjects?

I'm a bit annoyed that Europe has become the Guinea pigs for the current format.

If we are:
1) Examining the ways that BW rules interact with older cards at events
and
2) Encouraging those organizing international National events to not use BW cards or rules in these events

How can we possibly be using them as test subjects? We already know what to expect from a pre BW format, there would be nothing to test if they follow our suggestion.

The fact is that rotating before international Nationals started was not an option. With that in mind we did what we could to lessen the impact on those events. International events played without BW rules are simply using the format they would have seen if the BW rules changes had not happened.

well i am happy about the fact that the rotation comnes earlier than the years before BUT EU doesnt benefit from the rotation because most nationals will start before july. i hope that the eu tos can decide if their nats can have an earlier rotation.

Dragonite skin for Dragon then?

OOOO Serperior for Baron!

dragon and baron skins are fine. you can make a serperior skin for cass.

LOL wait
is canadian nats affected?

Common sense is a useful tool! When's your nationals? If it's before the possible rotation, you probably fit under the international situation that Biggie mentioned (if you cared to read past the first post).

If it's after the rotation, then you play HGSS-on.

Now thinking wasn't THAT hard, was it?

One point of concern I've seen that has been touched vaguely over many posts are the league promos. Granted, B&W didn't come out until...what, Januaryish in Japan? So, there was no way P!P could have reasonably guessed the promos would be complete crap. But, lets look at the promos (off the top of my head) that we have been/will be given:

Expert Belt
BTS
Azelf
Spiritomb

So, basically, the only promos we keep are the "junk" card promos and the special energies, which pretty much everyone already has because the were released twice in HGSS and many times before. Now, yes, this is a minor complaint, but having just released BTS and then turning around and rotating it seems pointless...when I was in the Marines many moons ago, we had a saying: Prior Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance. My issue is this: P!P has known about the rule change issue since Japan has released B&W and has done nothing about it. Now, with the rule change eminent, all of a sudden, they jump through hoops? This wasn't hard to figure out. A plan could have been enacted MONTHS ago. For what its worth, I'm sure the powers that be in America were more aware of what the rules would be BEFORE they were released, thus allowing them to have more time. Its also quite clear that Japan KNEW the implications of not rotating to HGSS WHEN B&W was released....so, how did P!P not?

I don't want to sound ungrateful, I really am excited about the rotation as a competitive player. But, as a LO, this is disastrous. My phone has been blowing up all morning from players. I've been pushing my guys so hard to get registered so we can get all of these promos, and now, they are worthless. And, what really irks me the most is the rather abruptness of the decision: I haven't even received my BTS promos in the mail yet, but the announcement has already hit? Apparently, this has been coming down the pipes for a while and they STILL print a worthless promo? And, despite giving all of the useless promos (as it turns out), the next two season, the only guarantee we have is a worthless starter which everyone will own 1 million of because the are commons...there seems to be little, if any, incentive for the casual player.

This is interesting news, and I am glad that I did not heavily invest in a "game breaking" deck that was "borrowed"
from everybody else (like a lot of people I have seen at league with Luxchomp-esque decks).

Since I tend to play for fun, this does not really affect me.

However I can see the positive effects of this for even league play (since a lot of people use it to practice with
deck ideas).

in my experience talking with dan (and mike, before him) regarding league: promos etc. are chosen and printed the year BEFORE they come out.

so how were they to know of these changes a year in advance in order to select different cards to use as league promos?

Of course Canadian Nationals will be effected. And you should be delighted about that.

How would you like it if in the middle of June you're told that P!P has deemed it necessary to make the switch to HGSS-on, but that it wouldn't affect a tournament still multiple weeks in the future? And even moreso, that your Nationals will be a donk fest, along with all of the rating point explosions that can come with that, whereas US Nationals three days later wouldn't be?

Since we're in the same rating zone, it would be ridiculously unfair for Nationals in the same zone to use that radically different rules.

Not sure if that was a "LOL thank heavens" or "LOL WHYYYYYYYY," but regardless, it's really just logical that if US is changed, Canada would be too.

At this point I only have one concern. Battle Roads is usually a testing ground. Not only for players to test the Meta but also for judging staffs to get familiar with new rules and game state. Delaying this change until after BR wastes the opportunity to give the new format a "test drive" before our two biggest tournaments here in the US. Also, as mentioned by some of the International players keeps them in the dark about their format to some degree. I hate to see us all head to Nationals with an "untested" format but welcome the change.

The best of the best, both players and staff, can handle changes like this. Wizards put out 15+ and the new Modified format specifically for their Super Trainer Showdowns and players were expected to deal with it.
Those that want to be crowned the very best should be able to deal with coming into a new format.

Note: The Japanese have been doing it every, single year for Worlds.

The free cards you got are not useful anymore, just be patient and you will surely get more free useful cards in the near future geez.

@ Chartaxe: You seem to be assuming that we knew about the rules change before promos were chosen and printed. I'm sure the Marines had a saying about assumptions too.

We have been looking at this issue for a while now, and one of the many issues we have had to look at is the effects on our promo schedule. We are very aware of the negative impact an early rotation would have on these promos as well as the promos you are not even aware of yet.

If we have not done anything about it yet, it might be because we have not yet decided when the rotation will happen.

Thank you for this much needed rotation! Now I don't feel i'm wasting my time and money at nationals!
Can always count on ya'll for doing the right thing over and over. I remember a few years ago when Fulop posted an essay on Blaziken ex MA should be banned and you guys had the correct arguement :)

I'm really hoping this goes through for a HGSS-on Nationals. The player base seems to be responding well to it and it's definitely worth suffering BR's to make it through to a healthier, more enjoyable format. Looking forward to judging Battle Roads while testing for Nats!

i dont mind league promos being rotated, it happens, what i'm concerned about is the last set of promos will come out after the possible early rotation, i'm wanting to know that last set of cards will still be useable in tournaments if we rotate early.

It sounds to me as though the promos are a minor concern when they really should not be. The promotional cards should be a reward/incentive for organized casual play or for participation. At the moment they feel more like bait. (an incentive keeps the player in mind, bait keeps the controller of the bait in mind)

If the promo cards were chosen many moons before their release, why choose cards expected to leave with rotation? All playability arguments for Expert Belt aside, the card should not be a promo if it was retaining "playable/legal promo" status for under 1 year.

Thank you P!P :thumb: Time to finalize plans for NATS!!

In regards to the promos old and upcoming. BTS is one of the newest promos. So many Leaguers were looking forward to this card. Under B+W rules there is no evolving 1st turn. BTS is the only card that allows 1st turn evos now that Rare Candy has been errated. My guess is that if the rotation occurs as expected prepare to lose BTS. I cant see BTS staying in the B+W format. Raindance T1 was sick during the origin days of Base Set and will be sick now under B+W if BTS were to stay. Just some thoughts to throw out. Now we also have a Fire-like RainDance with Emboar. So dont expect BTS to stay in the B+W format even though it is the newest League promo.
