hey, I have been out of the game for about 2 years, (the last set of pokemon I knew was gym challange) I was wondering if I could maybe get some help gettin back into the swing of things. My last deck had about 5 poke, 5 energy, and 50 trainers, thats what the style was, has that changed now??? what cards are dominate right now? is oak better than elm? what are the standard trainers that MUST be in your deck these days? and also, is rocket zapdos still dominate? thanks for the help

Hi and welcome back to the game. I am quite like you except i left longer (after the fossil set lol)

Current Modified Format uses card from E-Expedition, E-Skyridge, E-Aquapolis, EX-Ruby/Sapphire, EX-Sandstorm, EX-Dragon, EX-Aqua vs. Magma, and EX- Hidden Legends

Some decks people are running that are quite competitive
Blaziken EX
Gardevoir variants
Gorebyss variants
Swampert/Suicune
Shiftry

many decks mixes cards so you have decks such as
Crobyss (Crobat+ Gorebyss)

Dunsparce from EX-Sandstorm is considered a near-staple, if not staple, for any deck

Some trainers that most people run are
Steven's Advice (HL)
TV Reporter (Dragon)
Professor Oak's Research (Expedition)
Copy Cat (Expedition)
Rare Candy (Sandstorm)

although he just handled many things well

and I have very little to add
I guess I should help, as I started right after Dragon, so I had to go through this stuff too

the legal cards right now are the cards from Expedition to Hidden Legends
however, a new set is about to come out, and then we shall rotate out Expedition, Aquapolis, and Skyridge
so try for the EX sets for now

browse the decks forum
and look for deck ideas
and what cards most people use

It sounds like your interested in utilizing some of your old cards by playing unlimited. Right now with some of the new rulings (first turn Rare Candy and such) unlimited is pretty wicked. Some really insane decks can be put together and it may have devolved into the person that goes first wins almost automaticaly. If your in a position where you can play against others that are not playing these uber insane decks it can be fun and pretty wide open. Oh and IMO since the Metal NRG change R. Zappy is not good. On the up side the current modified (what the others have been talking about) is as good as Pokemon has ever been. So, if you'd like to get into playing real competitive type I'd recomend trying to get into modified, but if you'd like to ease into things and just have some fun I'd recomend finding a local card shop and see what they're playing. Also Nintendo (the new owner) is doing an excellent job with sponsoring tournaments (pre-release, City Championship, State Championship, Gym Challenge, Stadium Chalenge, National Championship, World Championship). This season is drawing to a conclusion with the World Championship at the end of the month but with the way things have gone this year and the increasing popularity, I personally expect next year to see even bigger and better things (not that there was any thing wrong with this year at all, it's been great). Welcome back.

which Wigglytuff?
the one from FoTL or the EX one

if you are talking about the EX one, then it is great, probably even worth playing over the Jungle one
the one from FoTL is absolutely terrible though

yeah, the ex one, is it even worth playing with the rule that your opponent gets 2 prizes? I bought a ton of packs today of different sets, i pulled a aerodactyle ex, pinser, and 2 entei, are any of those good with the new format? it seems aeoro looks good except he is ex, and also pinser looks absolutly amazing, any thoughts?

the one with the power is by far the best
then the EX version is broken when used with Firestarter
and the non-holo is crap
