Question:

Back in the WOTC days, the last two players in single elimination playoffs were ALLOWED to split prizes, even talk about splitting the prizes BEFORE one or the other dropped (see the quote below):

Because of this incident, perhaps POP should also instate such an exception regarding the final match of playoffs.

Just a thought....

EXCEPTION:
[FONT=Times New Roman,Times New Roman]Players in the final match of the single-elimination portion of a tournament have the option not to play their match. If both players of the final match agree not to play, one of them must agree to drop from the event (in order for prizes to be awarded). The DCI ratings of the players will not be affected because no match will have been played. The dropping player receives the second-place prize, and the other finalist receives the first-place prize. Example
[FONT=Times New Roman,Times New Roman]: Two players in the final of a Pro Tour Qualifier may agree to split the prizes (the travel award and the Pro Tour invitation), but this agreement cannot alter the results of the match. One player must drop from the event, leaving the travel award and the invitation to the player who did not drop from the event. That player is then free to split the prizes as agreed upon. The prizes will be sent only to the winner (that is, the finalist who did not drop); Wizards of the Coast will not send the Pro Tour invitation to one person and the travel award to another person. I for one vote against any prize split policy.

One-and-done takes care of multiple winner issues.

Pokemon has always wanted their games decided at the table.

Legalized collusion is not the answer.

The 15+ "Collusion Division" should not drive this argument. This game is and always has been for the 10- and 11-14s...yell numbers at me all you like, but their target audience is the target audience!

You want confusion, start talking prize split with a new 10- player's parents! Not in my backyard!

The winner should be the winner!

A sollution might be if the winner of a tournament is allowed to let part of the prize drop to the second place. (like travel allowance).

Aw, common Vince, there might be legit reasons for a prize split. For example, as in Pablo's case, he's already got a trip to Worlds 2006. In such a case, Pablo would be willing to drop in the finals of a Gym, and request that his opponent split the OTHER prizes in exchange for the drop.

I know this is a bad example since trip-trickle-down is usually done for Worlds qualifiers. Nevertheless, I'm sure there are other legitimate reasons to allow discussions of a prize split in the finals. It's part of our Pokemon OP heritage! Just a thought.

EDIT....

What about a Father/Son matchup in the finals? Certainly, that's a consideration where it's advantageous, in more ways than one, for the father to drop (father doesn't want to damage his kid's ego, he'll get a free trip anyway as a guardian, etc).

What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. I wish you best of luck in your classes and can't wait to see Huricane Pablo unleashed 9/22/06.

Yeah, I see your point. Now, I suppose PUI could also go back and require Pablo to repay any Scholarship bucks he's already spent, since the "fine print" listed above refers to "prizes" which technically refers to EVERYTHING he won, including those valuable TopX stamped promos.

I am pretty sure that the only Prize they would take away would be the Travel Award... Since He Won The Event That Was A Part of the Prize... Where the Trip is Conditional til the event happens...

Regarding Moss' comments,

Moss if it was you, you would have been crying your eyes out apologizing to everyone trying to get the trip to Worlds back. I tip my hat to Pablo for making his apology. Good Luck to you sir on what ever you decide to do. Hopefully you do return.

That doesn't make sense. According to Pablo's initial post, he was going to quit no matter what the punishment was, so why try and reduce your punishment when any punishment results in you quitting regardless?

Admits:
Recieves Harsh Punishment: Quits Pokemon
Recieves Lesser Punishment: Quits Pokemon

Does Not Admit:
Gets Caught: Quits Pokemon
Does Not Get Caught: Plays Pokemon

Obviously, assuming that his logic is to quit Pokemon if caught (which turns out isn't the case, however contradictory to his previously stated logic) the only way he would continue to play Pokemon, and thus the only logical thing to do would be to not admit to it and hope he doesn't get caught (however unlikely). All other actions have the same result.

Luckilly for me, I sucked it up at Worlds (only coming in 20th) and thus I don't have a trip yet (or likely EVER). And for what its worth, I cry my eyes out into my pillow every night. The only thing I had left to live for was seeing Pablo's sweet face. The dream is truly dead.

Pablo, i've traded with you- met you at worlds - and like you as a player and a person.

But, after 6 years of playing, i wouldn't quit over a 6 month suspension. Or over losing my worlds invite and everything that goes with it. If you love this game as much as you've stated in THIS thread neither will you. And i'm glad you changed what you said earlier in your 1st post ( about how you should have said nothing)- that statement made you look bad and didn't make you sound sorry at all IMHO.

Personally, i think you got off easy. I'm sure you were hoping for less than what you got ( like keeping your invite) and i'm sorry for you losing what you earned .But I wonder if you would have quit ( or threatened to ) if you got to keep your trip.

Your punishment also sends a CLEAR message that the folks at PUI want things decided at the playing
table- NOT worked out ahead of time. One and done also supoports this theory.

And Moss is correct, why admit to what you did and lobby for a lesser punishment if your already quitting?

I commend you for coming clean and wish you the best in the future Pablo- wether you continue playing or not.

So Pablo did lost his trip and invite.

What next is nr 5 of Worlds 2005 getting this trip+invite.
I for one vote that Yamato gets Pablo's trip+invite. (Yamato was the 2004 Champ and 2005 Top 8.)

That would make the most sense. Rolling the invite/travel to the next place is what seems to happens in other trip level events. Like Gyms and Regionals, if you already have one, it goes to the next in line.
