If a card from an older set is released in a current set, you may use the older versions. In a few cases the wording on the newer card gets changed in some substantial way to correct something like a translation error, and in those instances you must have a reference in order to use the older card. However, assuming the text is the same you can just use the older version in your Modified decks.
