Gym Challenge: Time for a name change?

I've found that it's much easier to market events to the press when their names contain the word "Championship" paired with some geographical qualifier (City, State, Regional, National, World) than generic ones such as, well Gym Challange (Prerelease is fairly self-explanitory but the format usually requires some explaining). The term is a holdover from the WotC days, and although the function of the event remains the same, I think it might be better named "Metro Championships" or something like that.

Thoughts?

Hmm.....I see your point with this. The rest of the names that are big tournaments(I'd call prereleases a more fun, relaxed inviornment(sp?) and not massly competitive) are all geographical, while Gym Challenge is its own.

FYI, I think we need a better name then Metro. Hmm.... _________ Championships? I've got nothing, but Metro doesn't sound big enough.

You know, I think that's a very good point. I've encountered that sort of 'confusion' while speaking to the media about our upcoming events... 'Gym Challenge' to people who know nothing about Pokemon sounds like something in Physical Education. District Championships has a nice ring to it. I think PUI should seriously consider this one for next year.

I like both Districts and "Worlds Qualifier." However, the reason I'd like District better is because districts in other events are usually used to decide invites to an event's highest level of play (in our case, worlds), whereas GC's are not the only worlds qualifiers.

"District" also has the advantadge of being nonspecific enough to represent an area either larger or smaller than a state but still authoritative enough for the job.

leave it! lets make it so inexperienced players don't think it's important so they don't ruin are resistances! ok, maybe not. :p

u dunno about a name change? let me think. *starts thinking*

You could always go with "Gym Championship".

But still... it's the "Gym" part that's confusing to non-Pokemoner... like our newspaper and TV stations that cover our events. When I explained about the upcoming Premiere Events, the "Gym" Challenge just got them confused. I had to explain that in the Pokemon world they battled in gyms, not that our players would be playing in a Gym  There were no actual Pokemon being released in a Gym to battle... lol Some people, bless their hearts, just don't get it.

District Championships
World's Qualifier

Now those are two titles that simply demand attention! No confusion, to the point... they just sound like something that you just don't want to miss, don't they? :thumb:

Actually I think District Championships would be better suited to replace the Gym Challenges and World's Qualifier would be a better choice for "the Grinder"... I had a hard time explaining that term to them also! lol

just to add my two cents, yeah, i'm putting my vote in for "worlds qualifier"
but yeah, i feel that the title "gym challenge" does keep some people away aka they think it's not as important.

i'm just hopin' to see some increased 10 & under attendance at the events i go to this year.

Perfect example of the confusion that's still out there due to the name "Gym Challenge"... and mind you, this came from a Pokemon player who just competed at States and didn't win... I told him not to worry, there's still Regionals and the Gym Challenge coming up and he responded:

How do you do the gym challange? I haven't had a way to do one (I think), If it's finishing the Sevii Islands, then I'm not finishing that anytime soon.

Now if it's still a confusing term to even some Pokemon players, (and he's almost 18, not like 10-) then imagine what the general media will do with this... probably end up on the sports page.

I definately think they should seriously consider a name change for next year.

It is a Pokemon themed name for the tournament, I like it, why do we want a generic name? It's part of the fun of the game, adds to the atmossphere, if not lets rename states to "win trip to nationals" etc..
other card games also have theme named events.

Gym Challenge

 I wonder if PUI would allow Gym Challenges to be held in school gyms? That way, there would be less confusion.

When I first started playing I thought that Gym Challenges were just things where really experienced players used the _______ (Insert Gym Leader name) Theme Deck. And if you won you would get to do that next year. I vote for District Championship.

Has anyone noticed/read the POP ad page in the newest Pokemon Fan magazine?

The logos for all the events from League to Worlds are shown, and the Gym Challenge logo has "Worlds Qualifier" on it, below "Gym Challenge"...

I did notice that. Actually was very glad to see it. I think it helps avoid the layman's obvious question "What's a Gym Challenge??"

That was there last year as well I recall. Kind of a mouthful, though.
