Gyrados vs. Gengar

I have been trying to play gyrados, and in my division (senior) flygon and gengar are big. how is gyrados' matchup against those two decks?

I went 6-0 vs. Gengar at Nats.

But, my version of the discard Gyrarados was much different than "FRENCH GYRARADOS."

If Gengar misses 2 flips, the match is yours.
(of course, I'm assuming that you know how to play vs. Gengar)

Flygon is not a problem at all... (again, my build is much different, but Fabian seemed to OWN Flygon with his version as well)

If you are playing against gengar, you must guard Claydol and Registeel/Regice. Use Registeel/Regice to discard extra trainers and supporters and cosmic the rest to the bottom of the deck. Those two pokemons will keep the damage output of Gengar low.
It really depends on flip of a coin if you are not using Luxray gl lvx tech.
I am not sure about Flygon MU.
Fabien is the best guy to ask this question.

That.
And just kill the Gengars with Crobat drops if you can. The matchup is fairly easy if you run two Unown Gs. It gets tricky if you have none or only one of them.

Flygon, is easier than Gengar.

You half to be really careful because gyrados likes to have huge hands and a t2-5 polterguites will do a ton if your not careful. If you can get yoru regi ged then your good because you get throw trainers out of your hand quickly. Also feinting spell hurts a ton too.

i can guess that, but it seems like a deck that can bounce back quickly, i may try it a bit.

I never risk running through a fainting spell. French Gyarados ran Crobat, you can do that. But I run 2 Devoluters in a deck that doesn't have a solid answer to Gengar. If you play PlusPowers, you can always leave it close to 100 and next turn attach 'em to Uxie and bottom deck it (Along with the PP's).

As a matter of fact, Fabien ran a tech Devoluter in his deck at Nationals, mostly for that reason. It does work indeed.
I chose not to run it in mine, because I thought the only threatning Gengars I would face would be in the topcut. And lists that would have gone that far were probably good ones and therefore ran Unown G. So because of that and the fact it was bot3, I figured Devoluter would more likely loose all it's impact...

but most gengars are now running relicanth, does devoluter add damage to relicanth?

and yes, i play max plus powers

No, Grand Swell does not do more damage if Devoluter is in play; it looks for tools and stadiums, not technical machines.

Against Gengar, most of the time you're probably just going to have to do what every other straight-damage deck has to do: be extremely aggressive and take the Feinting Spell flips when they come. You can potentially use Uxie to get around the Power, but it will require good Super Scoop Up flips (on the active Gyarados) and is thus unreliable. Nidoqueen can also make this difficult. Crobat G is another option, and so is Skuntank G, although Nidoqueen is still a foil for both. You could also run a Switch or two to aid with the Uxie trick; that card would be good in other instances as well, like if you opened with Regice/Registeel. You could also run Pokeblower to nab you prizes on things aside from Gengar. By taking out a Claydol early on in this manner, you're likely to cut off a Gengar swarm, which lessens your burden if the few Gengar you do have to deal with end up taking you down with them.

If you're running Gyarados with Floatzel GL lv. X and minimal other rescue cards, this match-up will be more difficult because it will be harder to recover from every successful Feinting Spell. If you run 4 Pokemon Rescue and a handful of Night Maintenance/TSD/Palmer's, you should be able to rebound immediately and keep your offense going.

you don't even need to quard, registeel, it heals itself.
that's why fabien plays the registeel

i have been trying it with regice instead of registeel. i also realized that the deck have some OHKOing problems. i was thinking of putting in a 1-1-1 metagross SV line, for the body. i'll still have 110 HP, and the only thing that would be able to OHKO me is a luxray GL using trashbolt, or a beedrill using band attack with four beedrill out, when i can just OHKO them.

I'm not a fan of Floatzel, I just have 3 Rescues and a Suicune (Along with 4 SSU's which can re-use Suicune in desperation). I also run 2 Switch, and along with PlusPowers I can get Gyarados out of the active position rather quickly for a 20 ~ 60 Psychic Restore (So Nidoqueen isn't THAT tough). Still, I don't rely on these things. I go for the Devolve.

I seriously have the WORST luck vs Gengar though (Starting with a lone Magikarp without a call to a T1 Shadow Room =/). In all my testing against Gengar, that situation plays out far too often lol.
