What's this?? F_S asking for help on teh Pokey gymz?!?

Yeah. I am.

Someone who hasn't played the game for 5 years is coming to a States next weekend. I want to give them a deck that is very easy to play, but also somewhat competitive. The best thing I came up with is a Banette ex variant.

Pokermanz

4 Shuppet
4 Banette ex

N...er...G

12 P
4 R

Trainzorz

4 TVR
4 Marys
4 Holon Adventurer

4 Pheobes Stadium/Holon Ruins
4 ER2
4 Potion
2 Strength Charm

P8 E16 T36

Basic strat. Get out Banny and sweep.

It's 10 cards short, and I need help figuring out what else to put in it.

Any ideas?

1 Banette safeguard, 4 Gligar, 1 Crystal Shard, 2 PETM, 2 Holon Mentor, 1 switch.
5 psy out - 4 multi in.

At Lusby CC 2006, someone won with a Bannette ex/Mew ex swarm (4 of each).
It had 4 Holon Legacy in it.
If you're not using any "double" energy, perhaps you can throw in the stadium that shuts them down.
N...er...G

12 P
4 R
4 Rocket Energy? Why?

put a 2-1-2 line of gengar LM that could help. You could put a good stage 1 pokemon and i think it could be better. Mabey grumpig CG or jolteon ex

I think he means rainbow. =/
I know, Rocket Energy isn't even legal in Modified.
"R" could be basic fire energy ("F" isn't fire, because "F" is reserved for fighting), Rainbow Energy, React Energy...

-2 mary's
-2 adventurer
+2 houndour
+2 houndoom
-4 potion
-4 stadiums
+2 crystal beach
+2 battle frontier
-3 psy
+3 fire
+2 cyclone
+4 tranceiver
+2 mentor
+1 holon scientist
+4 reversal
+1 banette CG

Hmm.. the question I have is, would a new player be better off with a complicated yet powerful deck that takes skill and metagame/archetype knowledge to play, or a simple but less powerful deck that is easy to pick up but not teched out to do well in the metagame/against archetypes?

I would probably aim for somewhere in the middle. Drop the potions, marys, and a couple psychic energy, and add simple pokemon that just generally do well against other popular pokemon. An example I've seen bantered around lately has been Gligar UF to get an early ko on castform. I think he's a decent choice in a simple rush/swarm deck. Max the strength charms, add a couple buffer piece, and add some castaways for tool searching. This should make the deck more competitive without complicating things too much.

Okay - as an old mom who is still using fairly easy decks herself, (and isn't familiar with enough of the options probably) - maybe:

4 shuppet
4 bannette Ex
4 vulpix PK
4 ninetails PK

10 P energy
10 F energy

4 Mary's Request
2 Phoebe's Stadium
2 Power Tree Stadium
2 Scott
1 Copycat
3 Celios
3 PETM
4 ER2
2 Strength Charm
1 Energy Switch

I think rainbow energy is an unnecessary complication, whatever deck you go with. Shady Move is hard enough for beginners to grasp, and it makes for difficult decisions. If people see themselves making mistakes, they get frustrated.

It depends on how simple you want to go. Dustox EX is fairly easy line to play, and evolves itself. It was played with Banette EX at one time, because it was a full ascension deck.

If you just want to be hitting with Banette EX, how about fossils? They could be annoying, although you'd want to back it up with Great Ball/similar to make sure you eventually get a Shuppet. I see you haven't listed any tutor trainers, but I think "get this pokemon" type cards are easy to understand. This is probably the option I'd go for.

If you go with Fervor's list above, I'd fix that to use far more Psychic Energy than Fire, and would probably switch to the DF Vulpix.

Make sure the person has a decklist they can consult, and maybe make printouts of the key cards. If you're going to use cards like Scott, you need to know what you're going for.
