Hi all,

So my friends and I are just starting to get into pokemon, and I'd like to ask you guys for some advice.
I'm trying to set up a casual budget deck with Leafeon as my sweeper, wiping out my opponent's entire team in one fell swoop.
Here is what I have so far:

Pokemon:
4x Leafeon (Plasma Freeze)
4x Eevee Lvl 10 (Rising Rivals)
4x Roselia (EX Dragon)
4x Pachirisu Lvl 30 (Great Encounters
4x Minun (Legendary Treasures)

4x Roseanne's Research
4x Cheren
4x Professor Rowan
4x Great Ball
4x Potion

14x Grass
6x Electric

So as I've stated before, Leafeon is the sweeper, namely its Energy Crush attack.
-Pachirisu is a great tutor for Eevee, Minun, and Roselia
-Roselia is put in to get some energies on Leafeon quickly
-Minun is used to ping my opponent's benched pokemon
-Eevee is to be... well, Eevee

What do you guys think?

I assume you're not playing standard by seeing your decklist, so here's a few points of advice.

I'm not much of an unlimited expert so I can't help you much, but from what I can tell...

-drop the minun, he offers nothing to the deck.
-You don't need that many energy, you should remove electric completely and leave your x14 grass energies.
-switch the great balls for ultra balls (pachirisu will be your main source of basic draw, great balls will be useless since he can bring out 3 Pokemon)
-Switch Rowan for Professor Oak's New Theory, it's superior hand refresher.
-Remove your potions, they're not worth the deck space
-Add some more search, maybe some energy search or more draw power such as claydol from Great encounters

also something to note:
Lefeaon isn't very good until late game, look at him as a final gambit of sorts, he's used at the very end of the game to kill stuff when everything is setup.
You might want another hard-hitting grass type for your early game. Unless you're confident in your ability to get enough energy out before your opponent one-shots leafeon with only 2-3 energy attached.
I don't know 90% of the cards in the unlimited meta so I can't give you good card recommendations.

Ok, well thanks for the response.

The reason I have Minun in there was to ping down the opponent's pokemon in order to set up Leafeon to sweep their whole team.
Do you think another pokemon does this better?

I know Leafeon isn't great until I get enough energies on him, but here's another question: How do people normally play this game?

I've looked at a couple of decklists, and as far as I can tell, they're all very aggro-oriented (meaning that they're just full of ex pokemon
or other extremely powerful pokemon that can hold their own in a fight; I hardly see any "combo" decks.) Do you think this strategy might
hurt me?

I grew up playing Yu-Gi-oh, and then moved on to Magic: The Gathering. I still play Magic, and I realize that it's a different game than pokemon.
But I can't help but feel that my deck design stems from my experiences from Magic a great deal.

Ah you want to spread bench damage with your minun? There are way better cards to do that, in my opinion.
SInce you're playing an electric deck Electivire from Boundaries crossed is a good candidate dealing 30 across the board for 1 double colorless and 1 electric.
It takes some setup which probably makes minun more desirable. Dusknoir from Boundaries Crossed controls damage counters on your opponents bench as well probably comboing well with minun or electivire.

I don't know how unlimited is played, for the most part people just want to setup as quickly as possible, usually setting up big basics or EX Pokemon. Yeah aggro-decks are the way to go, you want to kill things as quickly as possible. Some combo decks exist but they usually involve bench sitters or energy acceleration. The strategy has its flaws, minun is very weak and can be one-shotted very easily allowing you to only spread 10 damage once, and probably giving your opponent a free prize. You'd probably want a bulkier damage spreader.

Yeah, mtg has an overall better setup in my opinion. A deck like yours would work since you can easily eat the small 1 - 2 damage while you setup your field. But in Pokemon, you only have 6 life so you need to setup much faster and get your prizes asap to claim victory.

Your deck is overall good and well thought out of but a lot of the Pokemon n your deck are outlcassed but I can't help since I only know cards from HGSS+, I'm not an unlimited expert. :(

Thanks again for all the help.

I'm just very hesitant to throw a bunch of EX pokemon in my deck. It seems pretty cheap to me, considering they're extremely efficient for such little cost... Is that what most decks consist of nowadays, or are there other viable strategies?

Yes, most decks seem to focus on EX cards.
Especially the ones that win the big events.

Personally I also try to avoid EX cards when building decks.

Since your playing with a Team Plasma Leafeon, maybe some other Team Plasma stuff might be useful?
Such as Absol (for example).
Also if you want to try a standard format version of this, that new Eevee from Furious Fists is great.
When you attach an energy card to it, you can go look for the same type of Eeveeloution (so you would need Grass to find Leafeon) & evolve it.

Also another spreader is in Team Plasma (Weezing) does 20 to every Pokemon for 2 energy.
Plus if it gets KOed it discards 3 cards off of your opponents deck.

Or perhaps Gourgeist which does the same thing (but only costs 1).
