Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

How to Let Them Understand

For the past year or so, people have been giving me grief for playing Pokemon and continuing to collect cards and play the games. My dad couldn't be clearer in his opinion that Pokemon is for little kids. My friends all seem to think the same, in fact I do not know anyone who still cares about Pokemon (outside of Pokemon hosted events, of course). I do not know what to say to these scornful remarks, and I want to know how to people to accept/understand/respect my love of the game. Any suggestions?

Getting people to accept is is rather difficult since a lot of people view Pokemon for little kids. I honestly don't care what people think, even though I have no friends who play it. I'm trying to find people to play it with now or go to leagues with. Just don't tell people you play and keep it kind of "underground" like I do haha.

Who cares? It's a hobby. My ex gave me grief all the time about it.

My current girl picked up playing and is really good, usually whoops me. She's great.

Well, what I ended up doing was just quitting for a while. I stopped all Pokemon activity for three or four years (granted, I had only played the TCG for two or three sets, so I'm really talking about video games, which I had played since the day Red came out).

Eventually, I learned that the best way to do it was to just play along with them. Make jokes about how I play it. Not take it too seriously...but making sure that they know that, no matter what they said, I wouldn't stop.

And so, maybe five or six years after I picked the games up again, I started playing with the cards and now, a year later...well, I'm posting on a forum about it.

Ahaha...so if you want my advice, just don't take it so seriously when you're around them. Of course, there's different actions called for by different situations, but that's the best general advice I can offer. The most seriously you take yourself around them, the more they'll mock you or whatnot.

Eventually, you'll find people who you can talk and laugh about this kinda stuff with, so just bear with it for now, y'know?

Yeah, people like that are clueless about anything with pokemon. My mom babysits a 6 year old boy, and she informed me one day that he said he "Grew out of pokemon", and she thinks that I should too. Some people are just ignorant to what pokemon even is, and you shouldn't let them control what you want to like. It's like bashing a girl for liking video games, or a boy for liking shopping.

Eventually my mom realized that pokemon isn't for little tykes when she saw me at my local league a few times. Like I said, some people are ignorant.

Tell them this at least you aren't doing drugs or in some gang.
Also tell them The Masters Division is huge in Pokemon.

Pokemon isn't just for "little kids" heck the 14th movie was all about Truth and Ideals that's some deep stuff right there.

I get grief sometimes too for being in pokemon but ask them what they are into lol.

I tell my friends it's like a hobby, or sport. Some people like to play basketball, or football, or martial arts for fun. I like to play pokemon. Then I tell them about all of the cool perks that come with it like meeting new people, free events and prizes (if you win) getting to travel etc...

People won't know how pokemon is untill you tell them, or show them. Don't get discuraged when talking about it either. Because if you do, people can see the fear in you and doubt you even more. So keep your head up.
