Hyper Beam/Lightning Crush/ Crushing Punch

So those three attacks discard an energy, yet I've read somewhere that the discarding energy is first, and the compendium says Crushing punch discards after. Does that only apply to hyper beam and lightning crush that can discard before the attack is damaging? Or does Crushing Punch follow the same rule?

I'm concerned of this because of knocking out a Pokemon with rescue energy, since I have always discarded the card before damage. Does the discarding still happen if the Pokemon is knocked out?

Damage is always first.
However, KO's happen after effects.
So, if an effect discards energy from a Pokemon, that is done before you check for the KO.
If Rescue was discarded, it is done before the KO and discard of the Pokemon.
