If you played it this way though.. I'd guess noone would play Call Energy anymore and everyone would tech in 1 Pachirisu... Probably....

im still unsure of how this would work as a new format. it sounds like fun but it would need some
getting used to, but would be. EXECPT...for my deck, a scizor/cherrim, i cant play powers. most of
techs people would running would have powers. so i wouldnt be able to open with the good techs other
than sableye.

The balance is just in a different place. it's not gone with this kind of change.

Please can you explain where it is then?

I guess one way to stop ridiculous first-turn plays would be to have a Poké-Body along the lines of: 'This Pokémon cannot be played during your first turn'.

Stops people using overpowered stuff straight away...

If we play by this rule, mr.mime will be a ubiquitous tech because it will prevent donking. No kingdra, machamp, or sableye donk. next set no rampardos or sp pokemons donk.

Actually, Machamp would still be a legal donk unless Mime Jr. was underneath.

i agree this idea would make the game less difficult in picking what to paly in your deck. four poke drawers, 4 candy 2-1-2 champ and howerver many uxies you dont wast the setup on? pkmn tcg would be donk decks all the time and almost no room for setup decs...

Pick my starter pokemon, so a crobat and a sableye with dark energy is an instant win on the first turn? You're kidding right?

The holes most of you are trying to punch into this idea are farfetched at most.
Take the above.
You only get the sableye!
After that, the chance to draw a dark nrg and a crobat are the odds or luck some might say in your opening hand.
Then your opponents has to start with a 50 hp or less for that to work. 60 hp is only in trouble if the sableye gets to attach a specail dark ( now the odds are huge).
Then you still have a double sableye start option where the flip still counts on who goes first to factor in odds/luck.

After reading post and thinking about this. The downside I see, which I don't think anyone has stated, scouting and talking about other peoples starters willl increase heavily after the first round.
This is already frowned apon by most but very hard to control. This could make it an out of control gossip.

POP determines how our tournaments are structured. PCL determines the game procedures. I dont think that the proposal is a bad idea. I can easily imagine having always played that way and being quite happy with it. But it would have to come from PCL.

I agree that you would no longer have mulligans.

I agree that there is a risk that the information war would increase and result in more complaints about scouting.

In more detail I don't think that choosing a single starter would prevent FTKOs. To prevent FTKOs you have to set two or more Pokemon. So the alternative setup procedure would have to be to set one or two pokemon and then draw the remainder of your hand. Unfortunately that is a much much bigger change.

The whole character of the game would change and become much more serious without FTKOs. However there is a dark side to FTKOs: tournaments with big prizes need to reduce the impact of the FTKO on selecting the winner.

I expect it would be easier to address the FTKO through changes to the tournament operation and scoring than to change how the game is played.

You've just made that first turn kill much more possible than before, sableye decks did it before this rule has been proposed. You're still giving them the most key part of the combo for a first turn ko to take place. It's not that farfetched when it's already happening.

Only one Sableye per deck.

The exact same thing I was thinking, and if I'm correct you DO NOT pick a Pokemon from your deck in the gbc version of the game.

It's the same as it is right now on the part you're talking about, besides card games are about luck and to deplete the luck to make it an easier game for example: Bebe's, Rose's they eliminate luck.
If you let people pick a Pokemon from their deck at the start of the game, there would be less luck, which means less fun.

I still have it...

Illegally..

I really do not like this proposed rule change, as it would, for me, eliminate my most favorite part of the game. And that is looking at yout top 7 cards after your opponent cuts your deck, and the anticipation you feel when you first look at your hand your are delt, and your mind races to decide if you got a workable start or not. IF you got to pick your starter, the games would all start out the same and be very boiring. In my Tyranitar deck I had 3 Sableys, 3 Larvitars, 2 Baltoys, 2 Sneasels and 1 Rotom. And I hsd to start at least 5 games in Cities with that lone rotom, THoes games I really had to scramble to get set up, and while that dose make the game more difficult, it also makes it more intereseting, and you do get a sense of accomplishment, when you anage to get your deck up and going sfter a less then optimal start. IF I got to pick my starter the neach game I would have a Sabeleye, and I would only run one in me deck ss I would get to stsrt with it all the time, It would eliminate drawing a late game 2nd or 3rd sableye when you do not need it, and you could put in two extra Roseanns or CYnthias in your deck.

Other decks would be stronger then they are now if you got to pick your starter. There would be a lot more Milotec and Gyrados played if thoes decks did not ever have to worry about getting stuck with a 30 HP Magicarp or Feebas starter,

Nw, the donk can be delt with without going to such an extream and radical change. IF you want to even the start out to make donks less common. the nwe should eliminate all trainers from being played by both layers on T1, The 1st player could draw a card, and play an energy down and attack. The 2nd player could draw a card, play an energy csrd and a Suporter, then attack, then starting with the 2nd turn there would be no restrictions.

This would prevent Kingdra and Machamp decks from being able to OHKO T1 just becuase the went 2nd like they do now, Nothing is more frustrating then having a roseanns and a Luxury ball in your starting hand but not being able to use them becuase you are going 1st. and then to have your Opponent play a Bebe;s and Rare candy on T1 to beat you before you can play anything.

I got a really cheap win this year becuase I got to go 2nd. My opponent started with an Unown G and I with a Larvitar. My opponent went 1st, Attatched an energy to unown G and Passed. I have a special dark, warp Point and Bebes Search in my opening hand, So I win. I draw play, my supporter get a Sabeleye. attatch the special dark to it and play down the warp point for the win. That was way to cheap of a vicotry. My opponet had supporters to get a basic but he never had the opportunity to play it because he went first, He lost the game on the pregame coin flip, I think that problem shoud be eliminated, without changing the game set up completely.

I think it would be kinda cool if you could just start with machamp and other evo's that's how it is in the video game and take away poke-powers and bodys it would just be kinda something cool and different like double battles it's not the big way to play, it's just a fun way.

The balance is just in a different place. it's not gone with this kind of change.

I note that no-one has managed to answer my previous question - where exactly has the balanced moved to?

To those who like this change: playtest it with a few people and let us know what it's like! We can argue forever, but the real test would be people actually trying it out.

I find the wole idea interesting, but unlikly in the extremity to ever be implimented.
One of the largest parts of the game is about how you must balence your deck. Sure, you can only run 4 basics that you want, but with that you must ensure the means to get them. Seeking out your starting basic... essentialy ruins that.

I cansee this becoming a popular just-for-fun deviation, but a revision of the game? No.

This reminds me of shuffle chess, where you set up your back row in the first 8 moves. Still played as a varient, just for fun.

I'd prefer a more subtle variation, where you eliminate all trainers during the first turn, for either player. Optional mulligans works too. The donks are detrimental to the game. I understand that there is luck in the game, but it really feels unfair to make no mistakes and still lose in one turn.
