"I Play Theme Decks" - Round 2 - RESULTS POSTED

I'm send "ROUND 2 FEEDBACK" to individuals as soon as I score their lists.

This is a universal tip that I'm giving to everyone. I worded it best when PMing Cyrus, so I'm pasting it here to share with you all.

4. When dealing with that 'green' player that lacks just about ANY kind of experience needed to understand what you're talking about, you need to go out of your way to break down your explanations of card use and strategy. BeBe's search was thrown out in round 1. That was a clue that the kid is "ok" with Top Decking! It's on you to enlighten him about the concept of turn-by-turn advantage! WHY is BeBe's such a good play vs. another kid playing a theme deck ? You can say "this is a search card" and "this is a draw card" but he'll be thinking "uh... ok. Wanna play?"

Feel me?

You gotta dig down and get in touch w/ your inner newbie and build this kid from the ground up :)

Also, avoid terminology that ONLY a tournament player would be familiar with UNLESS you explain the meaning.

Example:

This card will allow you to spread which you can come back and sweep using a good sniper. Make sure to tech for weakness and use lots of draw to recover due to your low HP attackers.
Don't play down your Uxie because it's a searchable draw that you can only use once. Drop SSU to reuse your Uxie when needed.

That explanation would need, at least, a SEASON of experience to truly benefit from and comprehend.

Do we have to explain it again, if we explained it in a previous round, to the same player? (I know I do in real life, but I don't have a 5000 character limit when talking to a person. The closest I have is a time limit, either the kid's or my own.)

Do what you think you HAVE to do to make the kid better. If you JUST explained BeBe's and he tossed them out, sit him down and hit him over the head with that explanation; he obviously didn't get it the first time!

MANY people ate up their character limit because the LISTED THEIR OLD LIST! Do NOT list the old list; it is not needed and only limits your available character limit.

When we get our scores will we know if we're making it to the next round or not? Or can we just hope we got a pretty high score?

Thanks RA!

Yeah, don't despair at your score, even if it looks pretty low. For example, I made a 16 last round, but that's in large part due to me not having my newbie gloves on.

However...Is 16 good? Is 16 bad? All depends on my pod. Even if it WAS terrible, please: no self-violence due to a deck contest.

Either way, if I do indeed make it through this round, I'm excited to have a second shot at channeling my inner newb...Mainly because my inner newb is so huge. XD

I think he pm you your score along with constructive criticism.
He said he will get it all done by Saturday.

I have not receive any pm from RA.

I got my score but... what's the max score? There are 5 catagories. Is it max of 5 each? That would mean 25 max meaning I did... bad. But if not, then what?

Does anyone get his/her score already or do some pods get the scores? i didnt get the score yet.

Wait. Assuming that you're not telling everyone the base score for each caterogry but geiving them constructive critism to hint what caterogries they lost points in, can I assume that I scored low in explainig the startegy, and 4s or so in everything else, or like low in startegy, some 4's, some 5's and losing points in frustration? I'm wicked tired, so sorry if I'm making myself sound like a complete idiout. With 5 people staying in every pod, could someone with a score of 18.. assume that they're safe?

If I remember correctly from last year, a 5 is a truly exceptional score and given out very rarely. Assume your score is out of 4 for each category, and you'll get your true worth.

ONLY 17 MORE LISTS BEFORE ALL SCORING IS DONE !! (*celebrates quietly .. then puts on headphones and drives on... *)

IN AN EFFORT TO BE FAIR: Going to LIST ALL scores and cut those on the bottom.

It's not good to have one guy lose with a score of 18 if there are others getting through with a score of 9 :/

So, the "CUT LIST" will be up in a couple of hours.

(trying to get it all done before the PokeGym #2 Fantasy Draft)

Meh, my score isn't great but I suppose I shouldn't have expected better. I really couldn't think of a way to differentiate talking about the card and apparnetly talking about the card tot he kid.

I'd just like to reiterate that I think the kid in question needs to stay a junior with no experience in future IPTD tournaments (which hopefully there are because they are a lot of fun). Saying he's a senior with some know how doesn't make sense when a comment like "this card can be a nice late game touch you can swing energies to" doesn't register at all (not to sound complainitive, I had to use an example i was familiar with xD).

Seniors with tournament experience = better listener.

Senior with NO experience = lower ability to grasp what you're saying and lessing wilingness to follow advice!!

I'll tell you like I told someone else, if a new kid draws into Arceus, he'll bench it and start attaching to it. He sees Arceus and 80 damage and gets excited about using it. He doesn't have the experience to understand how that attack will put him WAY behind on attachments and leave him vulnerable for 3 or 4 turns. In a perfect world, you;d load Maganium and move energy to the Arceus for late-round hits, but new players aren't thinking "late round"'; that's tournament jargon that takes experience to truly comprehend.

That new player is looking at THIS TURN and THAT DEFENDING POKEMON.

I'm definately OVERgeneralizing here, but Seniors DO catch on to instruction/advice faster. So, he'll get it, but right now he's new and is making new misplays and judgement calls.

Feel me?

I think that as you said, it's the over generalization that gets me. I in no way expect the kid to pick up Sablelock and wreck, but when i start helping a new senior, they ALWAYS understand the concept of time in game because they always talk about how it takes them too long to set-up their main guy, because the general design of a theme deck does that. So when i'm told i'm helping a senior I just expect a better grasp ont he gamestate and ability to follow simple advice like "don't use this guy until you must" sort of deal.

I can't outline how little i want this to sound like bashing you, I absolutely love the format of this tournament and will gladly participate as long as its around, I just feel that this sort of thing is geared more towards the common junior and don't imagine basing it on an overgeneralized senior changes all that much. Juniors in my experience can't get enough when they taste a little consistant victory anyway :thumb:
