... but when you wake up to hear that the flag carrier for the Greek Olympic team misses a random doping test then crashes his motorcycle, you know it's gonna be one of those Friday 13th's.
I got up for work five minutes later than I normally do; nothing fatal, but enough to rush me. Got my Friday Night Magic stuff together and headed off to work. That's where it began.
On arriving at work, I felt in my pocket for my locker key to stow my cards, then realised that I'd left them in my other trousers along with my mobile and all my money. It was looking to be a bleak break.
I'm a forklift operator in a busy supermarket. There was a line of trucks waiting for me, including one with eight or nine pallets of stuff to check in... not what I wanted to hear that early. One of the dairy pallets was badly packed and I lost about eight cases of soup cartons before I could set it down; the place smelt like mushroom and chicken for hours afterward.
I borrowed some money from a workmate for my break, promising to pay her back when I went home for lunch. After that, I remembered that I'd also left my housekey at home; I wouldn't be able to get in. I'd spend it in the canteen then... except that I would then starve to death, because I couldn't ask for more money. I had to take the chance that Dad would take his lunch hour the same time as me, and be at home to let me in.
I headed off, but when i rounded the last corner, I saw no car in the drive. About to turn back, I noticed a ground-floor window open. Mum would never be that careless - she'd be away all day - so someone must've been in. I rang the bell. No reply. Rang again. No reply. Looking around to make sure no-one saw me, I wrestled my way through the window; no easy task with all my Magic stuff with me. Turned out my sister was in the shower.
Emptying those pockets gave me the greatest sense of empowerment I'd ever felt in my life. Things began to look up. Once I got back to work there were dozens of pallets waiting to be offloaded, and it looked like I might miss my 6 o'clock bus, but I got those cleared early enough. Then came the big blow; the final lorry was delayed, and wouldn't be there until ten to seven. After lugging all those cards around on three separate journeys, and spending most of the day in a near panic, I ended up missing FNM. Which is why I'm here posting this, rather than playing cards.
Roll on tomorrow.
