Internet provider--satellite vs. DSL help please

Hello,

It seems that we have move to the country. I didn't know that.
Anyway, we want fast speed internet for watching movies, uploading a youtube video, gaming. Currently we have DSL from CenturyLink that gives us 1.5 mega-somethings download which translates to .7 speed. It is painfully slow and two people can't use the internet at the same time in our house.

I just learned that HughesNet has Gen4 in our area that would give us 10.0 mega-bits? download speed via satellite. That is way faster than what we currently have. But this HughesNet and Dish talk about data. They'll give us 30 GB per month to use. That really translates to 15 GB during normal daytime use and 15GB during the middle of the night.

Questions: 1. does anyone have a satellite set-up and likes it? 2. Do you burn thru your data plan in the month? 3. How much if any lag time do you have when playing an online game?

I only have 2 choices where I live--the slow DSL and this gamble on the HughesNet satellite/Dish set-up.

Any help is appreciated.
P.S. HughesNet says this new Gen4 is way better than their old system. We'd have a dedicated line (whatever that means). They are aware of their poor reviews but say this new Gen4 will solve that.

Thank you!

Is the Satellite plan limiting your data amount or your data speed?

I'd say if you are doing any online game (League of Legends, anything Xbox/Ps3/Wii) system go with a plan that does not have a data restriction. You'll use it fast (especially if you are on Youtube/whathaveyou).

1.5Mb/sec versus ~10?Mb/sec(right now you don't have the system, so even if they say it is 10Mb/sec, there is no guarantee you'll get 10, you might average ~7ish with cloudy weather) with a cap on the data (15GB/mo, effectively, unless you stay up until all hours of the night playing games). I think its up to you to figure out what is best for you.

I'd recommend playing the two off of each other and see if you can get the DSL upgraded to a superior plan.

Thanks, Sandslash7.
I canceled the install on the dish. I did more research and decided that I'd burn thru their data plan quickly., and that there would be a delay for gaming which is not acceptable. Believe me, I've tried getting my current provider to up my speed and they can't. I've called every internet provider in the area every month, begging them to bring fast internet to my area. I think they know me by name now. I do have some company coming to do a speed test tomorrow. . . I may get 3 Mbs/sec instead of the lousy 1.5 now.
Thanks.
