Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Is Gyarados still playable?

^I'm in the seniors division and have no idea what the meta is (had to miss cities cause of sports) but I think I still have a chance of beating them.(depends how much time I have to test the deck) Will that change what you just said. Atleast by a little bit?

Ability to search out Regice:
Very High

Ability to search out Cyclone Energy:
None

Regice > Cyclone

with sableye, claydol and felicity's cyclone doesn't have to be searched out!

Regice is dead space in this type of deck, take it from experience with and against the deck........and while we're on the subject regice can be bright looked and power sprayed, oh wait cyclone cannot.

Dead space in a discard-heavy deck is irrelevant. It's discard fodder. And we always like discard fodder when we're looking for Pokemon Rescue with Felicity's.

I only need to run one Regice. You need to run two to three Cyclone to make sure you draw into it. Hey, that's more room for the aforementioned Rescues!

Speaking of trying to draw into it, don't you sometimes need your Regice/Cyclone REALLY early in the game, to get out from under Spiritomb? I play Collector! LOOK! REGICE AND TWO KARPS! Good luck digging into your deck trying to draw for the critical turn or two that the opponent needs to set up their deck.

Oh, and as for Mr. Mime techs that come out later on - are you going to accumulate 3 Cyclone Energies in your hand every game just in case they drop that Mr. Mime, so that you're ready every time? I don't think so. That's kind of annoying practice when you're Cosmic Power-ing early on. I'd prefer to keep my critical recovery cards. If you are going to run energy, Cyclone isn't a bad choice, but trying to use it as a replacement for Regice isn't a terribly good move imo.

Regice > Cyclone.

Some of the things that you shouldn't do are Blissey Prime and Promocroak.

:nonono: WHAT? are you kidding? Promocroak basically WINS the luxray gl matchup!! IF you are planning to play gyarados AND expect luxray to be big, PLAY Promocroak!!! Sheesh I can't wait for states and regionals if people keep filling others heads with nonsense! In fact go ahead and keep it up better for me!!

i dont like regice. a good player will take advantage of you laying down a pokemon with THREE retreat.

it has no good attack. it is worthless starting and cant retreat. you going to warp it out? lolol

i like cyclone. it can be re-used, if youre not stupid and attach to crobats who can be turned and played down again. it also provides crucial energy to retreat.

That's cool and all but wait I run 4 cyclone, I start Sableye and felicity's in hand woah!!! Wait a minute I collectors then discard all three karps next turn while drawing into 8 cards. Plus the more cyclone the more disruption throughout the WHOLE game not just the beginning. You can't regice a flygon lv x for the win but you sure can cyclone!

yeah, cyclone moves ANY pokemon- basic or not. it cant be sprayed, either.

its good as warp to get 'easy prizes' and to remove problematic pokemon like mime or spiritomb from active.

there are a lot of reasons to prefer cyclone to regice. retreat cost, power vs not, bench space vs not, starting vs not, basics vs any pokemon moved, discard 2 vs use 1 card, etc.

Calm down.

Would I play Promocroak in Gyarados? Yep.

Does it 'basically win the Luxray GL match up'? No.

Promocroak will revenge kill one Luxray and then most likely get OHKO'd itself. That's if it ever gets active. Unless you run E Gain (and draw into it) Promocroak needs 2 Energy attachments which means at least a turn on the bench, during which it can be sniped or dragged out before it has a chance to KO anything.

It's a useful tech. It doesn't 'win' anything.

I am calm. Seeing as promocroak can sit on the bench and take energy attachments without disrupting gyarados, it is very successful in WINNING games against Luxray. I have even seen sucessful lists with two promocroaks from the brander brothers here in colorado. If you want to beat luxray I think it's great!!! But two is pretty heavy for states IMO!!

One should be run if you expect luxray!! Look I'm actually trying to help people!! Gyarados is a solid play and there is not very many ways to sway away from THE list from worlds without giving up consistency. This just tends to be a way that has worked in the current metagame full of luxray.

There's really not much point in running Promocroak, when Gyarados just OHKO's it by itself, for no energy. Sure, maybe it was necessary at Worlds because there was no Expert Belt. But now that Gyarados can OHKO with Belt, why waste two turns charging a Promocroak on the bench that will most likely die before it does anything useful?

You have to realize that most of the other decks gain much more speed than Gyarados because of Double Colorless Energy. No matter if it is SP, Flygon or other decks, Gyarados is one of the very few decks that doesn't get a lot faster with DCE.

Plox may be back again, and while Gardevoir and Gallade themself don't hurt Gyarados very much, TGW screws it up, and there will be some Plox decks with Honchnoir around.

So if you compare the Collocetor to what boost Garchomp C and Flygon got, you can't actually say that Gyarados got stronger. However, if Donphan and Charizard will be around (but I highly doubt this for Donphan), Gyarados at least gets some autowin matchups.

If you think about it all DCE does is speed them up an extra turn in the beginning. Gyarados speeds up an extra turn by getting all 3 magicarp in the discard making it a turn faster.

I've played strait gyra since br's son.

basic list would be:

4-4 gyra (4 gyra is easyer to search out/draw into)
3 crobat (free retreat, searchable)
3-4 sableye (I have no luck so I play 3 and usialy search for em :p)
1 regice (mime)
1 uxie (at least 1 searchable draw, uxie x is good here too)
claydol doesn't really work because you're gonna have a big hand holding onto rescue/ssu/turn
1 azelf (2 can work if you really want it)
1 unown g
1 or 1-1 tech (I love toxicroak g promo) (ditto is cool for mirror/gengar)

call isnt really needed because you're mainly starting with sableye and using supporters. calls are only useful early game.
cyclone is great, warp can work
if you tech promocroak, 2 psy
at least 1 basic dark

3-4 collecter
2-3 bts
1-2 rare candy (look at your metagame, if flygon is popular use a couple candys)
1-2 rose (collecters usially outweighs rose but searching energy)
4-3 felcitys (you have to draw rescues/discard carps)
2-3 bebe's (gyrados searching)
1-2 luxury ball
2-3 pokemon communicator
4 ssus
3-4 poketurns
4 rescue
1 nm/palmers (depends on how worryed you are about trainer lock)
1-2 lookers (if shuppet)
2 expert belt

yeah gyra is a great choice for citys because it can one hit jumpluffs/donphan/sp's which is sweet. It can pretty much handle everything in the format. unless tangrowth is super big lol, that hurts

You meen states right lol.

It speeds up decks like Flygon at the beginning, yes, but that's not the point about DCE. It also helps it to get a much faster recovery or build up multiple hitters with energy.

Up to now, the main advantage of Gyarados above most other decks was that it does high damage and has a fast recovery. With DCE, Flygon, Garchomp and many other decks can do the same.

But DCE isn't searchable and usally Garchomp C decks don't have claydol. And with gyrardos they can use sabeleye to search it out, and only need it at the beggining of the game. While Chomp needs it all through the game.

i dont use luxrays attacks at all.
i dont use combee
and try 3 pokemon rescue and 1 tsd
when i roll for tsd i get 2 heads every time- and i usually have a pokemon rescue in my hand if that doesnt work.

Your luck with getting heads doesn't really help those less fortunate(ME).,
