I just read this off pokemon-tcg.com:

Pokémon TCG World Championships

What are Pokémon TCG World Championships?

The Pokémon TCG World Championships are the ultimate test of a player’s Pokémon TCG skill, and awards the most prestigious title offered by Pokémon Organized Play (POP), Pokémon TCG World Champion!

Pokémon TCG World Championships Events are operated by Pokémon Organized Play.

When are the Pokémon TCG World Championships?

The Pokémon TCG World Championships will take place at Disneyworld, in Orlando, Florida on August 21st and 22nd, 2004.

How can I play at the Pokémon TCG World Championships?

The Pokémon TCG World Championships are an invitation only event, meaning only those players who receive an official invite from Pokémon Organized Play will be able to compete for the title of Pokémon World Champion!

The World Championships Invitational structure is:
Top player from each age group at Pokémon TCG Gym Challenges
Top four players from each age group at Pokémon TCG Stadium Challenges
Top four players from each age group at the Pokémon TCG National Championships
Top sixteen ranked players in the Pokémon Organized Play rankings database as of July 20th, 2004.
Last chance tournament on Friday, August 20th at Disney World, Orlando.
Winners from the last World Championship event will receive automatic invites to the next World Championships.
In addition to invites, many players will also win travel and accommodations for themselves and a guest (for players under 18 years of age, this guest must be a legal guardian) to the World Championships. Travel awards are awarded as follows:
Top player from each age group at Pokémon TCG Gym Challenges
Top two finishers from each age group at Pokémon TCG Stadium Challenges
Top two finishers at the National Championships
Winners from previous World Championships are eligible for travel awards only if Pokémon Organized Play is able to confirm their attendance in advance.
Players may not earn multiple travel awards or invites. In the event that a player who has won a previous invite and travel award wins another Worlds Qualifier event, that invite and travel award will ‘bump’ down to the next eligible players.

How much does the event cost?

There is no entry fee to participate in the World Championships. The Last Chance Qualifier on Friday has an entry fee of $5.00.

What do I need to bring and know?

You must bring your own deck to play. Your deck must comply with the Modified Format as outlined in the Pokémon Floor Rules.
Bring your POP ID card, if you have one. If you don’t have a POP ID, one will be given to you at the event.
See the Pokémon Floor Rules for more information about what to bring to an event.
Make sure you arrive on time. If you are late for registration, you may not be able to play in the event. Check in time for all pre-qualified players is 4:00 pm on Friday, August 20th.
To participate in the event, you must be a player in good standing and abide by the Floor Rules.
What is the Tournament Structure?

The Tournament is run using the Modified Format and Swiss pairings. See the Pokémon Floor Rules for information about the Modified Format and Swiss. The number of Swiss rounds run will depend on total attendance at the event.

After Swiss rounds are complete, there will be a cut to single elimination finals. The top 16 players from each age group will then play in the single elimination finals on Sunday, August 22nd beginning at 9:00 am.

What are the Prizes?

Prizes are awarded to the top 16 players in each age category. Our age categories are; Under 10, 11-14 and 15 and up

All participants will receive a World Championships Promo Card and a Stage Two VIP Package just for participating!

Top sixteen finishers in each of the 3 recognized age categories receive the following prizes.

Is it right of nintendo do make this an invite only event knowing that only the best of the best will go into this and fight?? I know it a big honor but restriciting this when you make the nationals open to all is kinda sad. I dont like the idea that we are all restricted from the festivites in disneyworld. I think if you can get the cash to get to disneyworld and compete then goshdarnet you should have the chance.

Id like to see if anyoen agrees with me or agreses with nintendo.

I want a good clean topic with no: ranting,Fighting, arguments or wars. Just your opinion is what is needed.

The World Championship are an Invite-only event for the Championship side of the event.
The big tournament where the World Champions will be crowned will be an invite event.
The rest of the side events and fun things, will be surely free for everyone.

Last chance tournament on Friday, August 20th at Disney World, Orlando.
There's going to be a grinder the day before worlds starts, just like in Seattle...

You own words say it all.

This tournament is for the Best of the Best. In my opinion, that's how it should be.

And, as SD PokéMom points out, there's always the grinder :)

I agree it should be invite only.

As it is, many of the Grinder bids will most likely go to Orlando/Florida area players who will not have to debate of whether or not to travel just to play.

Every other event is open to the public - this is, and should stay as it is supposed to be, a test of the elite battling the elite in the game.

There are plenty of other chances for the public to play, and other events....without this, why have a Gym Challenge in Florida, or a Stadium Challenge in Florida. They don't need a trip, they already live there!

I would have to say that I agree with worlds being invite only. Theres plenty of chances to earn the invites- if you're good enough. By limiting the people that can get in, like everyone said above, it ensures that every single person in that tournament is a high class player. No holds barred- that entire tournament is going to play out like the top 4 in your local tournament scene. It should be a sight to behold. I also wouldn't be suprised if a couple players have exactly the same decklists! *laughs* There are only so many things you can do to a BAR deck, for example. =)

Just my thoughts.

yeah, its perfectly fair to make worlds invite-only. Its worlds for gosh sake lol. Plus, as others have said, there will be quite a few side event things going on for those that dont' make the cut.

Best of the Best a? So what makes them the best?? I've seen top players in previous tourneys go down in another tourney. They were the best last week but not this week. So it's all in the draw of cards vice versa. We can't win them all or be best at them all. IMHO Worlds should be open to those who wish to go.

There are many of the BEST players out there who may just not be the BEST at the EXACT event where a invite is being given away. Example- Of 4 CC my son was the BEST at 2 of them. So since he lost 2 others does that mean he's no longer a BEST player because someone else won a certain CC.

With my points taken, I don't think it's fair. Worlds is Worlds- should be open to the Players of the World.

Is every event at Worlds invite only? Because I understand why one big tournament would be invite only, so that all the best players could play each other and not have to chance having some newbie give another player a easy win.

I think invite-only is a good idea, it should have the best of the best Pokémon Players. Did anyone see the prizes listed for all the places? It made my jaw drop just reading all of them!

I guess im still living in a wizardss world and a place where everyone gets in on the fun. I gotta look in the now and see that invite only is gonan be a site to behold and a experience i wil never forget whether i get in or just watch for the sheer fun.
Thanks for opening up my eyes everyone. I hope some more post come in with opinions on the topic.

It is said that the best of the best go to World Championships, but what really makes someone best of the best?
1. Does the usage of an archetype make someone best of the best?
2. Does the usage of an anti-archetype make someone best of the best?
3. Does the usage of a deck that has never seen daylight make someone best of the best?

These are some questions that Nintendo and PUI must really think about. Could the best of the best actually be abusing an Archetype in real life and, therefore, win all of his matches?

Personally, i think that invites to worlds should be, to an extent, invite only.

i think that INVITE ONLY is a GOOD thing, but this HUGE issue with FALSIFIED TOURNAMENT records and names is scaring me about it.

There are some MAJOR problems that need to be dealt with before the invites are sent.

Best of the best is seen as:
Winning in the face of adversity and wealking away with pride of you lose
holding your own in a situation that cant be won and
Nomatter what winning honestly and with respect

In my eyes that is what makes you the best at the game

I suppose that I can see the reasoning behind the "Invite only" thing, but it does get on my nerves. Who, exactly are they inviting? Is it going to be purely people who have won National tournaments in their country? In that case, there is not going to be a single Australian there. Just the other weekend, we had a pre-release tournament for the Team Aqua&Magma set. (It's like nobody thinks Australia exists - I even go to Electronics Boutique and ask when Pokémon Colosseum is coming out on Gamecube and they're like Poké-WHAT?)

Anyways, the point is, I could be the best Pokémon TCG player that ever lived, with thousands upon thousands of wins against thousands of decks, and not a single loss - but it won't necessarily mean that I'll be invited. I might be the most modest, most even-tempered player ever, but it wont mean that I'll be invited.

To be honest, if they say Invite-Only, and they don't invite me, then I don't care about them - not who wins, who loses, or any of it. After all, if they'd wanted me to be interested, they'd have taken an interest in people like me.

Anyways, the point is, it just seems so futile - why make a big deal if they're not having it open? If I wanted to go somewhere and WATCH other people play cards, I could do that without having to travel across the world.

In short, I don't think that it is fair to make it Invite-Only, even though I can see their reasoning for doing so.

Are you saying that you would fly over from Austrailia on your own expense to play in this tournament?
I think, realistically, an invitation with trip included is the only way you would get to it.
And I don't get your point about the TMvTA prerelease. We just had out prerelease as well. What's the point?

Not from Australia but that's part of my reason's as well this INVITE stuff is pure crapo. If we are willing to travel to this event and pay OUR own way, we should be part of the Big Game. Living in TX we drove 18 hours one way to play in the Fan Appreciation @ Gencon Indy. While there we met many Poke players from across the globe. A huge crowd from England ( I don't think their trip and hotel was paid for). We would gladly do it again this year but keeping our STUPID fingers crosssed that my family will hold their BEST title at one of the INVITE tourneys.

We proudly hold 5 City Champion Medals on our walls that Say MY Family is the BEST of the BEST. But none of it matters unless they win a Gym/Stadium or happen to be 16th overall.

I think Nintendo has it right. It is a competition. Players earn a chance to compete. It is Pokemons version of the world series or the super bowl. Would you want just any team at these events? Besides there is way more going on than just the championship tourney. In the past side events were a blast. I am sure Nintendo will run a quality event this year.

Superbowl??

yeah but remembering right there's a season of games that play to be in the Superbowl/ World Series. Not a few handful of comeptetions that are spread across the Country (can't make them all). At best we probably have 5 chances of an invite. Admission into these games and travel for 4 players would pay my way to Worlds several times over.

Not sure about your place of play but here in TX / OK we have several of the top players around. My family is holding 18 & 19th Globally right now with many of our friends right there with them.
