Am I the only one seeing the similarity between the best players in the game?
they're all at least 20 years old playing a game which uses an electric mouse as the mascot...

joke aside, it's obvious that the best players are some of those who's played this game for a long time.
Experience = Skill.

What tier would you put torterra in? 2? 3? Even with if you consider it tier 2, which is pretty exaggerated that's really ridiculous to accomplish. Seen any torterra's t8ing recently other than that?

Me and Troy (both from WI) played it at Nationals and made Top 128. Its a tough deck to play, and it has to be in the hands of the right player for the deck to do well. That German champion must have been a good player, but I wouldn't consider someone who wins one European Nationals to be on the top list unless he or she has other top cuts as well.

What I would like to see is a list of top players in the US by region, especially here in the Midwest where the competition is just crazy insane.

I don't see why people are saying that it's biased based on country (I understand OP was being facetious). This wasn't a list of the best players per country, it was the best players in the game. You can't be one of the best players in the game if you don't, y'know, compete against the best players in the game.

It's a great list. I'd like to see Ross and Gino there, and I think an argument could certainly be made for Jay and Kettler.

Good article regardless!

I would wholeheartedly agree with this list. These people have the best results over a looooong period of time. I'm Australian and even i'll admit there's no way Sam Hendle has anywhere NEAR the credentials to go on that list lol. I really like the article, it's an interesting read, and it just goes to show that even the best players have flaws.

i agree ^^^ there should be like an article like this one but with the top 3 seniors masters and juniors from each countries with the best stats type thing.

I'd like to know the top senior and juniors. The top seniors are Probably these people:

Aylam R.
Michael D.
Someone...IDK who??

^ well maybe not aylam.... But also there are tons of great masters out there not recongnized on this list. I believe this was written when maybe ness wasnt fully thinking, i demand a rewrite!

I will be honest: most masters don't really care about the senior or junior division.

This. Let's face it, there's a reason people watch professional sports more than college sports. People want to see (or in this case, read about) the very best. Some of our best seniors might very well become some of the best players in the world in a few years. Until then, I don't play with Seniors, so I can't rate them.

As for Jay Hornung & Gino, I considered both of them, but I have not played extensively with either of them so it'd be difficult to rate them. They are both, at the very least, very strong players. They may even be better than Drew Holton, who I was on the fence about including. (I also have not played much with Drew. All the other players I have played extensively list and reviewed complete deck lists they played.)

Glad to hear you guys enjoyed the article. That's why I wrote it.

how many people run torterra? luxchomp is a solid deck that everyone runs, so it top cuts everywhere. if everyone net decked a torterra list, im sure it would be t8ing everywhere.

Torterra has been around for a looooooong time and has had a few decent results (didn't it top 4 US Nats in the Year of the Plox?). If people thought it was a good idea to netdeck it as much as they do Luxchomp, then I'm sure they would.

Luxchomp is the most popular deck . . . because it is (or was, or might be) BDIF. Not something Torterra could ever claim.

On topic: the article includes Sami. Therefore it is legit.

well i agree, but for it to be discredited because it only won german nats is a little dumb.

LOL HE PUT CHUCK ON THE LIST! I thought it was supposed to be the *best* players.

I'm going to go ahead and call shenanigans on Sami's picture being one of me beating him in t16 of worlds 08. You couldn't have gotten a pic of when he t2'd?

You didn't put Gino, or Yamato on the list? Why? Cause you haven't played them enough? How many times have you played Holton?

And what about Con? He does have the most recent major event win.

(Btw, great article!)

What I liked most about this article is that it showed stats and acomplishments of the top players in pokemon. I really wish pokemon.com was committed into doing something like this article because the games big enough and it has enough interest to get readers for all the fans. As jason stated in his article, he listed the top players whose he's played against not the top players in GENERAL. So don't get mad if he's leaving people out.

For the sake of argument I think the top players should be based on tournament performance but most of all "WINS and CHAMPIONSHIPS". Just like professional sports you can be one of the best but until you win the national or world title your name isn't worth mentioning to the "all time greats". Anybody who watched basketball would say Lebron James and Kobe Bryant are the top two players right now. Many would say lebrons better but heres the thing though, Kobe has 5 rings and Lebron has 0.

Even though in jasons article it lists Alex B. and Drew H. on the list of his top players. Those players you could argue of not being on their because they haven't won the big one but they've came very close. They've top cutted consistantly and done very well in each tournament they play in. Therefore I agree with jason that they should be on that list. There tournament performance and him playing against them earned them a spot on that list vs. winning nats or worlds.

I really wish the article was in like a Top 10 or Top 20 players format but great article jason none the less.

If all goes as planned with the SixPrizes newsletter that is forming right now, I plan to do some sort of "Top Players" list (with a lot more people than Jason put).

Good read though nonetheless. I believe Kyle and Drew are the top 2 players in the game right now, while the others are certainly in the top 10.

I think this is exactly the type of buzz this type of list will always create.

If someone wants to do a "top 5 European Players" or "Top 5 Australian/NZ" players, I think we would all encourage it!

The top 5 Juniors and Seniors is tough because it changes year to year, and season to season.

No doubt, that Michael Diaz would have to be at the forefront of any Senior discussion right now, due to his finish at Nationals, and then, Aylam due to his strong showing last year and this year back to back?

Tough stuff, because there are players from every region who can get set to "make a run"

More to follow, but great list Jason, and thanks for the discussion!

Vince
