Leeds States Report

Well I wasn't going to write a report since I did really badly, but I figured, it was my first proper tournament and I fancied writing one. So here we go. BTW, if you're only interested in the report skip down a bit.

I headed to Leeds on the Friday before States and met up with Tom Hall who had been wandering around Leeds for the last 3 hours. After a quick trip to Game to buy HeartGold we headed to the travelodge for some deck testing. We knew we had a long night since it was the middle of the afternoon and my friend Jo who was staying with us was arriving til 11pm, so we decided to go to Leeds league.

I took the deck I planned to use tomorrow, which was Jumpluff with Shaymin. I played 3 games, against an inexperienced player, followed by two seniors. I only won one of the games which made me think twice about using the deck the next day.

As we headed back to the hotel Tom told me that Sami and Nitish were coming up which I thought was cool and made me a bit more hyped about the next day. Back at the hotel we chatted decks and Tom told me about his Jumpluff list that had got him second at States the week before (it had Luxray). He explains the deck to me and we play a few practice games. I wasn't totally comfortable with the deck but liked it more than mine, so Tom said I was welcome to play it the next day (Thanks man!).

We got a phone call to say that Sami and Nitish had arrived so we headed to the reception to find Nitish attempting to bargain a room with cash only (the card machine was broken) while Sami was sitting on a chair asking every passing person if they were Jo.

When Jo did arrive we headed back to the room for more testing. And by testing I mean Tom was teaching Jo to play (she had never played even casually before) while doing some outragious flirting, while Nitish was destroying me with Gengar and telling me that Jumpluff was bad, while Sami lay on the floor claiming he was tired and throwing Turtwigs at Jo. Fun night =).

REPORT STARTS HERE!!!

The next morning we headed to States, Tom had spent the morning modifying Jo's deck which he built the night before, and came up with Machamp/Absol. Up until 20 minutes before registration started Sami insisted he was playing AMU (after also settling on: LuxChomp, Gyarados, Gengar and "any 60 cards if we payed his entry" at different points during the night).

The decks we all settled on were:
Me: LuxPluff
Tom: Shuppet
Sami: Gyarados
Nitish: Gengar
Jo: Machamp/Absol.

No decklist since it was Tom's deck.

The tournament atmosphere was great, eveyone was really awesome. No-one called me up on the fact that I had a slower play-style than others (not stalling, just getting used to games).

Oh, and I don't remember huge amounts about the games, or even everyones name so if people could fill me in then that would be helpful =)

Round 1 vs Becci M with Gyarados
I should have the edge on Gyarados so I'm not as nervous as I originally was.
Game 1: We both have alright starts, but I get set up faster and take this game.
Game 2: Similar, but she gets set up first and takes this one.
Game 3: I started with Hoppip, she starts with Sableye. I get donked.

We had a cool chat during the game since she's a collector too, and at the end she asked me to sign a promo Claydol since she had fun playing me =)

0-1

Round 2 vs Naomi with Giratina/Butterfree
Game 1: I manage to get a Pluff set up while she sets up Giratina, fortunatly even when Giratina comes up I'm able to KO it before it KO's me. I can then take the last few prizes pretty easily.
Game 2: Very similar to Game 1.

Very fun game, and nice inventive deck.

1-1

Round 3 vs ???? (sorry, memory) with Shuppet Donk.
Jumpluffs worst nightmare.
Game 1: I start with a lone Crobat and the deck does exactly what it says on the tin.
Game 2: I manage to get set up a bit better but Mr Mime still makes it near impossible for me to even take a prize.

We then play a fun game with me against his Tyranitar deck in the remaining time, I lose again but he gives me some pointers on where I went wrong.

1-2

Round 4 vs ???? (sorry again) with Tangrowth.
This was by far the best game of the tournament.
Game 1: This game lasts at least 35 minutes, and we basically trade prizes all the way through. I think it came down to 1-1 in the end before he just beat me for the last prize.
Game 2: We barely get started. He's taken two prizes and I am just about to take my second as time is called.

Fantastic game.

1-3

At this point I find out that me, Jo and Nitish are all at 1-3 so I figure theres a good chance I'll play one of them next game. Sami and Tom were both 4-0 so they were definatly going to play.

Round 5 vs Nitish D with Gengar.
I was right heh. Jo is seated on the table next to us also. I didn't expect to do well in this game since Nitish had destoryed me many times the night before with the same deck.
Game 1: He has a great set up, mine is mediocre and he just powers through me.
Game 2: See Game 2.

Cool game still =)

1-4

So yeah, I had a bad tournament. But I didn't feel too bad since I knew it would be tough.

Tom and Sami take first and second seed in a Top 4 cut, Tom is against Ben and Sami is against Freddy.
While the Semi-Finals get started me, Jo and Nitish take a quick trip to Morrisons to pick up some snacks since me and Jo are staying in Leeds another night. As we are going through the checkout Ben meets us and says that Tom had already won.
We head back to see the end of the Sami/Freddy semi-final. It lasted a while but Sami won.
The final is more a discussion than a match. Tom takes the win.
They all get their huge prize piles and Tom lets Jo have his Giratina folder and hat. More flirting haha.

Fantastic weekend overall.

Props:
Meeting Tom, Sami, Nitish and Ben, all awesome guys.
Tom and Sami taking first and second place.
Jo going 2-3 with Machamp/Absol, despite only learning to play at 2am on the tournament day.
Jaedon for putting in tons of effort and making it a great event.
Sami trading a creme egg for a booster pack. Then pulling half of Lugia Legend and a Rev Holo Red Gyarados. ("Sure, you have those great cards. But now what will you eat?"- Freddy K.)
Getting some good advice about playing, and managing to improve my gameplay over the day.
Tom (again) for lending me his deck, and making Jo a deck to play.
Pretty much everything.

Slops:
Going 1-4, hoped for maybe another win.
Nothing else.

Awesome weekend.

Cool deck report and mega impressed with Jo.... less than 12 hours in to the game and she's playing in one of the UK's biggest State Championships along side the likes of Freddy, Sami & Tom... that's gotta be worth some bragging.

Really good to see you guys... roll on Nationals!
