Mareep HGSS question

Mareep from HGSS has the attack static electricity:

:colorless: Search your deck for a number of :lightning: Energy cards up to the number of Mareep in play (both yours and your opponent's) and attach them to Mareep. SHuffle your deck afterwards.

What I want to know, is which part of its attack is self referencing. If i had evolved to ampharos and used memory berry, would i still count the number of mareep in play, or ampharos? Also just to make sure, the second instance of Mareep in the attack is self referencing?

Counting the number of Mareep in play is not self referencing. You would still count Mareep even if Ampharos was doing the attack via Memory Berry.
The second usage, who to attach the energy to, is self referencing.
