So before i get into a report, i want to thank everyone i met this weekend for giving me the best weekend of my life. Without you guys, i would undoubtably not be in the positition im sitting in right now. ILYGUISE<3

So monday morning i get a call from my boy jorge saying...."what are you doing this weekend?" Right then and there, i knew i was attending u.s nationals. I scream for joy, run to my mom asking her for money, and quickly dart back to my room to pack.

I'm going to fastforward to the pre tourney, because there is WAY too many funny jumbled memories to tell you guys about the drive to indianapolis.

I was determined to do well at this nationals, so i tell Orion Craig and Jorge Ramirez that no matter what crazy deck idea i come up with, a good deck will be my play. After going x-3 bubble out both years, i was crazy determined.

Zach, a GREAT senior player from Florida comes into our room to testplay and whips out yanmega magnezone, such an odd looking deck. It seemed to keep up with every deck we played it vs though, and it had something i LOVED. Consistency. Decks love to **** out on me, this was one i believed wouldnt.

So 2 in the morning friday, after no prevail with any kind of "SD" i say, "GUYS, IM PLAYING YANMEGAZONE, NIGHT"-builds and falls asleep.

Wake up early in the morning, get down to the convention center before jorge and orion, feelin GREAT about this. Eventually rosters and pairings go up, aaaand

ROUND 1-YANMEGAZONE VS DONCHAMP

So ironically enough, the guy is talking about how good tyrogue is. I win the coinflip, he flips over cleffa. I communication for tyrogue, and offer the hand shake with an active yanma.

1-0

Round 2-Yanmegazone vs RDLBOAR

I setup MUCH faster than him in this match, hit a couple key reversals, and theres just nothing he can do.

2-0

Round 3-yanmegazone vs yanmegazone

I go first with a STELLAR hand, and thats usually all my deck needs to win the mirror match. By the time he took his 2nd prize i took my last.

3-0

Round 4-Yanmegazone vs zekrom

He flips over pachi going first, im like crap!!!!!! zekrom always has a good advantage vs me going first. He gets a bunch of stuff in play, but no shaymin. Eventually the game gets really close, but zekrom seems to run out of resources to win the game, and thats exactly what happened. Didnt have the resources to take the last prize on a clean magnezone.

4-0

Round 5-Yanmegazone vs donmegacinno

I start with lone cleffa and lose the flip, he flips over tyrogue, GG

4-1

Round 6-yanmegazone vs reshiphlosion

i start off so bad, mulliganning about 6 times with no judge or copycat in hand. I smell a loss!
He gets a bunch of stuff setup, but suprisingly the game comes down to him having to double pluspower bouffalant to take the last prize, 0-1

4-2

Im feeling rocky about the last 2 losses, but i know ill do good.

Day TWO

Round 7-yanmegazone vs megaturn

I setup WAYYYYY too fast with like t2 double zone/double mega, she cannot recover.

5-2

Round 8-yanmegazone vs yanmegazone

My start is pretty sick, to his mediocre start. I have a good advantage throoughout the couple turns the game lasted before he scoops.

6-2

Round 9-yanmegazone vs megaphan

He starts cleffa, collect for tyrogue.

7-2

I rip my deck, find out im 28th seed, and wait for 128 pairings.

TOP 128-Yanmegazone vs MEWPLUME

Game 1-i start misplaying for some reason by asking hand size AFTER i play cards down. I lose in a close game

Im SO mad at myself, i know to be more careful next game

Game 2-the prize trade off just isnt fair, i win.

Game 3-he copycats into all of his attackers, meaning he cant mew. I win shortly after.

8-2

TOP 64-yanmegazone vs yanmegazone

This is one of the matches i barely remember, i know i won game 1, lost game 2, and won game 3. This parts really blurry though.

9-2

I start talking to Martin M, who seems to be cheering me on. This was quite inspirtational!

Top 32-yanmegazone vs emboarzone

game 1-he starts cleffa, i get tyrogue

game 2-he starts off super bad and i start off super good. Not much else i can say.

10-2

Top 16-yanmegazone vs mewplume

game 1-close game, but yanmega is just unfair vs any vileplume variant.

game 2-see game 1

11-2

top 8-yanmegazone vs yanmegazone

game 1-i win in a game where he tries mounting a comeback, but it is too late

game 2-i start magnemite but he goes first, drops pachi with energy, copycats for second nrg.

game 3-he starts cleffa, i grab tyrogue.

12-2

TOP 4-Yanmegazone vs megaking

game 1-he completely wipes the floor with me due to him going first

game 2-he scoops mid game to save time i guess

game 3-he scoops when he realizes i have the last prize.

13-2

TOP 2-Yanmegazone vs donmegark

game 1-he hits a key reversal to kill my double energied magnezone

game 2-i topdeck pokemon circulator to kill his benched donphan

game 3-he starts zorua vs my yanma, hes first. He drops pluspower, junk arm for pluspower, prof oak, draws dce, flips for lunge.....TAILS! THE DREAM IS ALIVE! I quickly draw my card, collector, and start setting up. Eventually time is called the prize count is 6-5 in his favor. Im able to take a prize to even the count, but he isnt. He knows he has to put tyrogue to sleep to prevent him from losing the game. he flips tails. im thinking he might have a judge in hand, so i grab my tyrogue and am thinking even if he wakes up, im still asleep he cant damage me. so i attack, he flips tails, i flip tails. YES. he is forced to pass, he flips heads.....I FLIP HEADS! and like that, im national champion. I jump up not realizing it might have been a little unsportsmanlike, but i make SURE to shake his hand and congratulate him for top 4'ing nats 3 years in a row.

I have a crowd of people jumping on me, the feeling was great. The pokemon people are talking to me, but its hard to grasp that i just won nationals in the master division. Sorry to any of them if i was a bit spaced out.

SLOPS

LOSING THE SOFTBALL GAME

I will update the matches soon, because im still trying to remember how each of them went down exactly.

Congratulations on your victory, good to see you dodged the Zorua donk...and yeah, not much more to say I guess but congrats again.

I see you failed to include about 4 other flips that would have won pooka the game...

Anyways, you deserved to get to top 2 so gratz.

Good job. I was watching from afar. Dont let coin flips get you down. They're part of the game, anyone who says they aren't is a tryhard hipster.

I just want to put a statement out there-yes coinflips are a part of the game, but had pooka not hit his reversals in game 1, im pretty sure i would have won game 1. He hit a KEY reversal the turn i was going to take a prize with my double energied magnezone. I think its quite rude saying "you deserved to get to top 2", but hey, not everyone has the same opinion.

I still think pooka is the best player in the world, but do i think i deserved my nationals win? Yeah. I know i got some nice reversal flips in earlier rounds, im sure kyle can attest to that too!

But overall, i want to thank everyone who has congratulated me. I know a lot of people dont think i deserve my win, but i know i worked REALLY hard playing every round to the fullest of my mental capacity.

In that one moment, i'm thinking this.

If he wakes up, and has judge/copycat/pont/juniper in his 1 card hand(which he hardly used any of), he would win.

He only played reversals to my knowledge, so if i bring up tyrogue, and stay asleep and he wakes up, he would have to hit another flip to win it. I play 2 switch in my deck with 3 junk arm, so even if i stayed asleep on my turn, i had ways of getting out of it.

I do agree, very gutsy move, but IMO sometimes having guts is what it takes.

Didnt someone get 5 wins with riolu to win the grinder? I'm sure winning 2 matches in swiss and 2 games in topcut out of 16 total rounds is nothing to be ashamed of. I got donked round 5, if it matters.

But once again, thanks everyone!

Yeah congrats. I don't know what grinder you're talking about, but I know the two-time world champion Jason K got donked 3 rounds. So yeah, getting donked once in exchange for two donks in swiss is pretty fair, although it's ironic they rotated to avoid a donk fest. :/

You cant honestly be mad because he lost on flips, this format is all about flips. also why do you need to say this? If you don't have anything good to say don't say it at all.
Anyway congrats for winning man!

What are you trying to say? He deserved top 2 but not the win because of coin flips? Why are you so sour, if Pooka lost on coin flips he would of won on coin flips. If the tables were turned, you know everyone would of been "OMG POOKA WON NATS AGAIN, ALL SKILL BABY ALL SKILL" just because he has a reputation of being an awesome player, which is something I am not denying. It seems just because a complete random (outside of Florida) won nats people are saying the game is all luck based and the format is so bad. Pooka and Justin had a great game and neither are sour about it. Its a game people just a game. Luck is a factor, but a factor that is an over whelming majority. Pokemon is 1/3 decklist, 1/3 skill and 1/3 luck. If you want to play a game that has no luck involved, go play chess.

Congratulations, Justin, for winning Nationals!

Coin flips are what make this game fair, stable, interesting, and most importantly, fun. Without risky cards in our format, we would have a static meta-game with only one or two decks doing very well, do we really want another season of MD-on again? I am all for a format where any deck can win.

I totally agree with this post.
