Master's 2nd Place Report - NW Regionals - DandyLions

Front Page News Editor
Ever since the original Gold and Silver came out, I've been a fan of the entire Jumpluff line, Hoppip in preticular, but all the little fairy cottenweeds are pwnsome. I wasn't a big card game player until the EX days, and there was no love for Jumpluff there. When SW came out, I tried in vain to make a good deck based around that Jumpluff with the set's Donphan. I was always trying to get a Shiyn Hoppip in the video games too, and recieved one from a friend a year ago yesterday. So when I heard about the HG/SS Jumpluff, and found that the translation to be super special awesome, I knew I was going to get 4 of them and play the deck. I proxied it 2 days after the translation was on Pokebeach and tested it for months, cutting Shaymins, Sunfloras and trimming down the Cherrim line to 1-1, making it extremely fast. I played Pachirisu to prevent donks and a high Belt/PP count. I liked how it worked, but felt it was a poor choice, given my history to be donked. So when states rolled around, I tried my luck with Donphan and LuxChomp, neither fairing well enough to lead me to Top Cut. With their conclusion, I began testing decks like crazy, deciding to use Flygon with the SW tech (which DECIMATES LuxChomp) and metagross LA line over reversal. This would be my 2nd Regionals, which brought my thoughts to last year.

Last year, I got third at Regs with Dusknoir/Electivire, losing to massive coin flip fail. I figured I wouldn't be able to top that, so I decided to play Jumpluff, screwing the likely donkfest that would occur to play a deck with my favorite Pokemon. I wanted to make use of those months spent testing, and started building it again right before the article dropped here. I had obtained a Luxray X, which I never expected to do, so i decided to play it with Bats and Ray over high Belt count and Cherrim. Once the article went up, I made some changes to it how I thought would be helpful, and then chose to just run with it. My final list looked something like:

1 Hoppip ( HGSS )
3 Hoppip ( SW )
2 Skiploom ( SW )
4 Jumpluff ( HGSS )
3 Baltoy ( GE )
3 Claydol ( GE )
1 Unown Q
2 Crobat G
1 Luxray GL
1 Luxray GL Lvl X
1 Uxie ( LA )
1 Azelf ( LA )
1 Mr. Mime ( MT )
1 Sableye ( SF )
Pokemon = 25

4 Grass
2 Multi
Energy = 6

3 Roseanne's Research
3 Copycat
1 Pokemon Collector
3 Bebe's Search
4 Pokemon Communicator
1 Luxury Ball
3 Broken Time Space
3 Rare Candy
1 Night Maintenance
2 Warp Point
4 PokeTurn
1 Expert Belt
Goods = 29

I figure i'll at least break even, and try and have some serious fun, since states lacked in that department just a tadbit, with my cards being stolen at Oregon and my hands being trash at Washington.

So I ride up with friends and they say how much Jumpluff there will be. I hadn't even thought of other people using it, and when we arrive, I'm astounded by how much of it I see and not surprised by all the SP. This highrise in Pluff/SP lead to the last minute drop of Regice in favor of another Copycat. As we wait, I do some trading to get my last PokeTurn and some Holo Grass Energy. We make our amazing Team Twelve,000 with Me (DandyLions), Clint(Pluff w/Shaymin/Flora), Corey(Gyara, no Luxray/Palkia), Daniel(HoPe), Marvin(LuxCHomp w/Shupper, Mime) and Aaron(Legit LuxChomp). And then we start. I just hope I don't suffer any donks for the first few rounds

Round 1 vs Ozzy (LuxChomp)
I did NOT want to play against Ozzy this early, he's a good player with a deck i'm uncomfortable playing. Thankfully, my set-up is literally a step behind his, and as soon as he takes his first cheap prize, I drop down 2 Pluffs and aggro through his entire field. I Turn a Bat to bench Ray so I could pull off his that tried to hide and this was a sinch. Copycat'd for 8 card ahnd at one point
1-0
(Aaron and I are 1-0, the others are 0-1 D:)

Round 2 vs Lday (Grass.dec)
Well, I got my easy Round 1 in round 2. Her Nincada calls for like, Paras and stuff, and I just break everything she has with Mass Attack for 6 straight prizes.
2-0
(Marvin is 0-2, everyone else is 1-1)

Lunch time. Small snacks, more trading attempts. Video game stuff. PokeWalker mania.

Round 3 vs Lady (Kingdra)
Alright, when I saw Kingdra being shuffled around in her deck, I had some serious mixed feelings on how this game was going to go. Fortunately, she was very new to the game, and started with Relicanth, which allowed me to buy 3 turns to get my set-up behind Sableye. Using 2 Supporters a turn, i'm able to get the perfect field, killl her first Kingdra, then bring up Claydol and kill it when she has a 0 card hand. No recovery. Lulzy moment: She thought you could set Call Energy as a stadium XD I was glad to help her out, and seriosuly, my assitance nearly cost me the game when I elected she DO discard to Ko 2 Pluffs, thinking I had the recovery in my hand. I didn't. I was able to get it, but there was an instance when I realized, my Luxray nabbign me cheap prizes had left me in a pickle. 2 Claydols later, that problem was solved.
3-0
(Aaron's 2-1, everyone else is 1-2)

Round 4 vs Ash (Cursegar)
D:< Ash isn't supposed to have good Pokemon!! Anyway, I start with Batloy, him with Tomb, he goes first and does 10 to tomb for a Haunter. I got, attach to Baltoy, bust another one on the bench, BTS, Bebe (lol not Commmuni), double Claydol drop, build up a Sableye, Pluff and Crobat bench. pass. He goes, attaches energy to Cursegar, gets a Dol and another Gastly, 10 more for Spiritomb. Next turn, I attach the Multi, Cosmic, Comsic, Spinning Attack. He can't get the enrgy he needs because he's too busy getting another Tomb for the lock. He sends it active and gets a 2nd Cursegar. I drop a Bat, and Multi on Sableye, retreat, KO second Spiritomb. Frustrated, he just gets his 2nd energy on Cursegar, finds another Tomb and hides behind it. Pluff comes up and kills it. So I fly ahead at 3 prizes, and from there, nothing can stop me. Think he took 3 prizes. I didn't feel I needed Regice here at all. The 2 discard would have hurt me more then the trainer lock did.
4-0
(Daniel 1-3, everyone else is 2-2)
Now, the guy who beat Aaron, said that Memory Berry allowed Ampharous to copy HG/SS Mareep's attack "Static Elelctricty" to search for energy for every Ampharous he has in play. Which is not true. He claimed he researched this on the internet, and the judge agreed to it D: Not sure if it was on purpose, but Aaron is all D: and I don't blame him.

Round 5 vs Andrew Lowe (Machamp)
I am so excited to be paired against Machamp. I know that no matter what donks may happen, if we play a real game I'll win. So yeah, I go second and beast mode like, 1 Claydol on the ebnch with active Pixie and another Baltoy and stuff on my bench. He double Blowers up Baltoys and Cnady Champ kills it. I somehow respond with enough Bat drop to kill his Machamp in one shot with Pluff, leaving him crippled. I take 1 more prize before he gets out another, and Hurricane Punch fails. I go for the 2HKO, allowing him to Raeg kill 1 Pluff so another could finish him off. I couldn't seem to fill my bench and he had like 1, so i couldn't even leaf Guard, but oh well. He gets another string of Cheap prizes, through Warps and such, but that gives me the same ability to take them. It gets down to 1/1 with his Machamp X using Strong Willed. He comments "Wow now the battle comes down to a coinflip" I Dol under 2 for 3 twice, get Warp Point and disagree with him.
5-0
(Daniel's 1-4, everyone else is 3-2)

Round 6 vs Greg (Plox)
Hehe, I sat next to him for 4 straight rounds, then one table away from him last round. We have some good jabs about that, sitting at table 1, and find out that both the person next to me and the person next to him are also named Andrew! He is stuck in a triangle of win names :O

So, I go first and start beasting behind a Sableye, grabbing T1 Collector. He goes, attaches DCE to Ralts, Rare Candy, Gardevoir SW. I'm thinking WOOOOW. His active is nothing special, so it's my turn. I manage to get out 1 Pluff, and 1 Hopiip, but no enermagy D: His turn, a Moonlight guides him to a T2 Psychic Lock, and my hand is crap. I drop some decent bench, now having Mime active. He goes, whiffs on energy to kill my Mime, so Plox's for 0 (GO MIME GO). My turn, I draw. Fail Pass. He goes, Whiffs again on energy, Plox for Nothing (GO MIME, GOOOO). One more turn of whiff for me. he goes, attaches an energy and kills it. I draw. Copycat for 8, get my energy, rare Cnady, 2nd Pluff with a Communi. Enough to kill his Plox and hopefully shut down Powerlock. His field was cluttered here, but he drops a Mesprit making it full with 3 Pixies, 1 Dol, 1 Ralts and 1 Bat. We have an uneventful round here, which was his Azelf trying to lock up my active and my Warp Point denying it as I take another prize. Then he gets out the PsyConnect Gardevoir, Belt's it, thinking it won't be killed with only 4 bench, and pwns my active Pluff. I send in Pluf. Drop Bat as my 4th mon. Drop Bat as my 5th mon. Poketurn. Mass attack for 140. Taking 2 prizes, and giving him no attack on the field. He tries to Mime wall me, but 1 Warp and a 3 energy Pluff later, I still haven't lost today.
6-0
(Aaron and Corey at 3-3, Clint and Marvin at 4-2, Daniel at 2-4)

Round 7 vs Mindy (Jumpluff/Shaymin/Cherrim/Sunflora)
I look for Greg and don't see him. I have a clear view of tables 1 through 11. Me beating him sent him down at least 10 tables o.0

Well, i've not tested against mirror ever, but her deck is slower then mine. I get to go first ad attach to a Hoppip, free retreat, Sableye, Collector. She goes and Warps to get her Shaymin active with Hopip/Sunflora/Dol/Cherrim benched. I drop Dol, Communi, Candy, Jupluff, Cosmic and get out another Pluff, koing her Shaymin. She revenge kills with Pluff, so do I, so does she, so do I, and then she's out of steam, and I warp Point hazzard her for more prizes. Thank you again Sableye, for making my otherwise lackluster start turn to my final swiss round.
7-0MG
(Clint and Marvin are 5-2, and somehow squeak in Top 32, Aaron and Corey at 4-3, Daniel at 3-4)

The 7-0 next to me loses his paired down match, meaning I am the only 7-0 player, getting first seed and scoring a match vs 32 seed. So i'm out to trounce him. I see my opponent, with an unusual name and for the first time ever, I know nothing of my opponent. I usually ask someone and they tell me, "Oh that would be the gentleman over yonder in the white garb, sporting that classy top hat ever so slightly esque." Or something like that :D I can't find my opponent, but do find that I am hungry as all get out. The place where everyone ahd lunch in the building is suddenly closed D: I ask Chris where I can get soem food and he escorts me to the Washington table where my last round opponent is sitting, adn the woman says "Oh sure, you can have food unless you're that Andrew Jackson who beat Greg in Round 6" jokingly. I feel even more awkward now, but she's exceptional gracious. Thanks again Washington, very nice to have interstate rivals who will still give a guy on the other side some grub :D :D

Top 32 vs R. D. (Amphy/Zong/Electrode)
Not his real name, I forgot it D: But this is the guy who beat Aaron with the Mem Berry shennegans!!! I'm not going to let him advance any further, ENTER BEASTMODE.

Round 1:
I start, attach pass, he attaches to something and gets energy. next 6 turns involve me getting 2 Dol, 2 Pluff, and 2 Bat, killing everything this loser can get in one hit with Bat drops for 4 straight prizes, before he Candies to Ampharous. I could Leaf GUard and reduce if he manages to attack. I don't care, Mass Attack, he passes, masss Attack, Mass Attack game.
8-0

Round 2:
He gets even less set-up this game, again only surviving a turn against Pluff with low bench and low energy Ampharous. I realize I have to let him take a prize if I want a clena sweep, so he sees his 1 and only prize of Top 32 before I waste him with Leaf Guard/Warp/Mass Attack through his Electrodes/Amphy's respectively.
9-0

Top 16 vs Dejohne (I think Machamp/Garchomp)
Now knowing i'm playing Machamp again, I figure i'm due for that donk. Yeah...

Round 1:
I go first thanks to Sableye, benched baltoy, collector for Q, Hop, Bat. He attaches to Baltoy and passes. Bat, Candy, energy, Q, Game.
10-0

Round 2. He makes me go first. I pass. He attaches to Uxie, hits my lone Hop for 20. I go, Rare Candy to Pluff, Collector, Claydol, Cosmic, Uxie, attach, hit for 30 with Leaf Guard. He draws. He scoops.
11-0

Top 8 vs Marvin (LuxChomp w/Shuppet/Mime stuff).
Round 1:
The pivotal game. I take the lead in stride, hitting his main guys for KO's constantly, while he manages to take some cheap prizes. I'm mostly in control of the board, allowing him to Spray my Dol and even Luxray because I don't really need them, and figure if he tries to make a late game rush, since he hasn't scooped for time yet, that him having no Spray would be beneficial. Eventually, when its down to like 2 prize cards, he finally scoops. Keep in mind, Marvin is a great player, but his turns could be measured in Months with all the scenerios he maps out. If you read his report, you'll see in his AMU match, this paid off AMAZINGLY, but no such luck here.
12-0

Round 2:
A rehash of Game 1, with the sides flipped. I can't get a strong enough foothold to stop these cheap prizes. He triple Flash Bites a Hop and then runs through something else, but I know I need to keep myself alive for as long as I can, because Game 3 will be in my favor. At one point he uses Cyrus, getting an energy and Turn, putting them on top of the CYrus he played for the turn and then puts down his deck. I comment he forgot to get a supporter. He's all:

":OOOOOO Can I get one then?"

Obviously I let him do it XD Could've swung my way if I was like that, but not worth it. I make him use an Aarons he tries to replay later to even out though, not that nice :D I manage to make a decent splash, but am losing Cosmics to his Sprays. So I Copycat for 12. And whiff on Luxray, Energy, Communication, Lux Ball, Rosy and Collector. I'm blown away that a 12 card spread could be so fail. Nex turn,he learns not from his mistake. Copycat for 14. I whiff on everything stated previosuly. Again. I have 2 energy, 2 commi, 2 rosy, 1 collector, 1 Lux ball in my ~25 card deck. I have to burn nearly every card in my hand, then comsic twice, getting 3 and then 2. That's 19 cards in one turn. Whiff. Next turn I get the Ray, but its too late, he DCE's a benched garchomp and there's nothing I can do about it in 1 turn. I curse that in 2 turns, I saw 31 cards of my deck without hitting one of the 6 I really needed and the 2 that I would've liked. But, my luck has withheld for so long it's about time I lost my first match of the day.
12-1

Round 3:
This game I know how i'm going to win. I don't like it. I can see that his field is going to be superior to mine, because I can't build up multiple Pluff with Dol support quick enough. So I agrro Pluff for 3 prizes, only losing 1 in the process. We hvae about 3 turns where this doesn't change, and these are some of Marvin''s longest turns. I thought of stalling a bit on my turns, but with the trash I had, there wasn't anything to really stall for. Not like I could play a 2 minute Rosy, and that's about all I ever saw. Besides, as I learned in my game against Plox, Jumpluff can come back out of nowhere. Time is called on his turn, 5 to 3 prizes for me, he's wasted all of his PokeTurns that he needs to Flash Bite my benched Hop, and can only DRush me. Had this progressed, I prolly would've lost, though to be fair, you can not underestimate the return power of Jumpluff. Great games, sorry I had to make you Aaron's that one time, glad you made Top 8
13-1

Top 4 vs Isaiah (DialgaChomp)
Game 1:
T1: I start with Bat and Baltoy. I attached grass to baltoy and passed he was like "WTF, energy on Baltoy".I see him building up a Dialga pretty early, but I get a massive Pluff field and start beating the clampearl out of everything else. I get an early Luxray GL like I planned and prevent him from setting Chomps with Warps and Luxray for 3 straight prizes. He sends up Chomp to stall, I miss the KO by about 30. He DRushes my Pluff. I send in Dol, attach Multi, Kill it. I have a second one on my bench, and didn't want to let his Dialga revenge kill my currently only Jumpluff. I night mainteance energy in about here, because I hade 2 on Dol, 1 in the lost zone, 1 on Jumpluff and 2 gone, so I know I need to dig for those final 2. I am able to get 1 more prize of the bench with my belt'd Pluff. He goes, Turn's his whole bench and leaves me with a 2 Sp. Metal'd Dialga G X, hitting for 80. I survive thanks to Belt. He attacks, rolls for Lost Zonin' energy........tails. WHEW. I hit him for 90 (70). He kills Pluff. I send in unbelt'd pluff, drop Crobat G, and hit him for game.
14-1

Game 2:
My T2 is 2 Dol, Azelf Uxie, 2 Pluff and a prize card. I do this twice more and secure my place at the top table.
15-1

I can't believe it. I've EXCEEDED last years regionals. I wait nervously for the game to decide my opponent goes. It's Cursegar vs LuxChomp. I wonder which I'd rather play, knowing that Trainer lock is a bitter end, but LuxChomp will sack me with so much luck it isn't funny. LuxChomp wins. No surprise, haxzor deck XD

Top 2 vs Jason (LuxChomp)
Game 1:
I attach grass to Hoppip and retreat to my azelf. he has Chomp active. HE opens with DCE, Bat, Cyrus, PokeTurn, Energy Gain. So he gets 3 Bats, killing my Pip, adn then an Earthquake. I go, bench like an Uxie. He goes, draws another Turn, plays 2 to kill my Zelf, and then DRush the game. Wish I had played Cursegar. At least it gives you set-up time, and is fun to play against.
15-2

Game 2:
This was just bad. I am so tired right now, I am about to have the most misplay filled game I've ever played. Not the best timing for it either XD

Twice, I miss Unown Q in my searches. I even look at my prizes with Zelf, but memory lapse places it in my prizes over a NM. This becomes me wasting time, netting 10 cards a turn with Copycat/Double Dol and missing Warp Point (and apparently Unown Q) for 4 straight turns. My active Dol is just stuck, and I misplayed by laying an energy no Pluff, thinking I could get him out with Warp, which didn't work out.. By the time Dol dies, I draw Warp Point as my top card. This game was just a fail after a fail after a fail. He gets to the point, where 3 prizes to 1, he's runs out of cards in his hand and is truying to topdeck energy. 1st card, energy, but I take a prize. Second card, not so much, 3rd card Aaron's Collection number 2 of the game. I tell him that's extra odd, and he's all "But I have won teh Regs with it so pwnzor, chaaa!" Rosy #3 > Aarons #2 Jason :D But hey, even if it was, you still got me.
15-3, 2nd Place.

So, I miss my chance at game 3, no travel allowance here. Oh well, Nats is just not int he cards for me (cwutididthar). Overall, for coming to the event with the minset that I just wanted to play a deck with my favorite Pokemon, getting 2nd was exceptional. Probably could've put up a better fight at a 2 day event, but going 11-1, losing only my last game nets me 125 points for the day :)OOOOO). Though ratings are pretty meh to me.

Props:
Everything and everyone except slops.
Special shout outs:
Sableye SF, absolute PWN.
Mr. Mime, for despite being nothing but Communi bait in all but 1 game, was probably the only reason I beat Greg.
Aaron for encouraging me all the way to the finals, despite my uneasy feelings.
Clint and Marvin for seeing our team 2 players through to top Cut, and the former for the ride and Sableye.
Seph, cause he is win :D
Washington players with their food and not taking Top 2 Master trophies.
Copycat. 26 cards in 2 turns. No other shuffle supporter compares.
JUMPLUFF, for being donked ZERO of EIGHTEEN games and bringing me my highest straight win count in a row, not to mention 1000 dollar scholarship prize. THEM LIONS BE SO DANDY :D:D:D

Slops:
Claydol's 2 retreat cost
Unown Q being all shy game 18 D:
Mem Berry/Amphy
Double Bat + Turn killing Hoppip game 17 D:
Not giving Jason a better run for his money (literally :p)

See you all at Nats? prolly not. Maybe Worlds though. Who knows, maybe I can sell enough Primes to find my way to nats too. Great day, 2 days before my Birthday too :D

I always run into your report threads. You're a beast man and your reports are a great read.

Thanks for taking the time to share this with us.

Anyway, I start with Batloy, him with Tomb, he goes first and does 10 to tomb for a Haunter. I got, attach to Baltoy, bust another one on the bench, BTS, Communication, double Claydol drop, build up a Sableye, Pluff and Crobat bench. pass

LOL CHEATER!

Also I seriously do take extremely long turns. lol.

Hahaha, looks like I missed something. I Know I didn't play any trainers with Tomb active. Cause I held them in my other hand. *hits edit*

:) You played an amazing tournament man! I couldn't believe one of the misplays I made in that second game, Poketurning
before I galactic switched an energy to Gchomp for a KO that turn....Free turn to Andrew!! >.< But yea, as you can probobly
tell from the time stamps of my posts, i'm generally nocternal, and I work graveyard shifts now. I think that helped play an
advantage for me a little bit, with the match being all like at 1:30am and crap.

And idk man, I think you may have broken the website with your new OP rating...you keep this up and it'll BE OVER 9000!!!!

^Technically, I'm not in the new sites rankings. But I gained 127 points at Regs, so if I WAS i'd be 20th in US Masters. So yes, I did.

Hahaha Shuckle, you underestimate Pluff! It can do 280 to Gatr Prime with Belt. Meaning 2 Bats would be 300 :O
