Hello, all. I am pretty new to the game, started in about April or May, and i'm working on my first non-pregenerated deck.

The concept is built around poochyena/mightyena and houndooms, more because i like the pokemon than for a specific strategy, but i have noticed something that i can try to build a strategy around. i am a former long-time Magic player, and i remember the days of denying resources by eliminating my opponent's hand through discarding.

What i'd like help with is twofold: i'd like help in making the deck stronger for casual play (i don't play at a lot of events, so i don't really need it to be legal under the current tournament set restrictions), but at the same time, i'd like to know what i could do with the deck to make it compete at a higher level if i should go there.

Anyway, here's the deck list:

2 mightyena (platinum)
3 poochyena (ex ruby/sapphire 64/100)
1 poochyena (ex7 deoxys)
4 houndour (legends awakened)
2 houndoom (great encounters)
4 houndoom g
4 growlithe (hg/ss)
2 arcanine (hg/ss)
1 vulpix (platinum 102/107)
1vulpix (unleashed)
1 ninetails (unleashed)
10 fire energy
11 dark energy
4 special dark energy
1 bebe's search
1 engineer's adjustments
2 cynthia's feelings
1 felicity's drawing
2 night maintenance
2 energy search
1 fisherman

any help would be great, thanks!

the poochyena you are using are currently banned. you need to switch them with something Magestic dawn and over. you also have too many energies. i suggest taking out 3 fire and 4 dark energies for more trainers. replace the ninetails from UL and put in a HGSS ninetails. replace the houndoom g with 2 uxies and 2 houndooms(both from LA) take out 2 growlithe for 2 mighteyna. this is what i can think of to fix up your deck

Ahh a very fun deck idea you have, but let me help you.

Mightyena pokebody allows him to attack for free when affected by a special condition. This works wonders with Skuntank G. you poison both you and the opponent and because you can attack for 0 energy chances are you have less energy attached to you than your opponent so Desperate attack will strike for 80.

IF you like Houndoom, may I suggest the one from Legends Awakened. HE can attack for 1 energy and deal 60 damage if you have less pokemon on your bench than your opponent.

So here's a rough outline for a decklist.

Pokemon (20)

4-4 Mightyena (PT)
2-2 Houndoom (LA)
2-2 Ninetales (HGSS) (Roast Reveal)
2 Skuntank G (PT)
2 Uxie (LA)

T/S/S (27)

4 bebe
3 collector
1 Palmers
2 PONT / Cyntheas Feelings
2/3 Engineers adjustments
4 BTS
2 warp point
1 luxury ball
4 Great balls
4 quick balls

Energy (10)
10 fire

That's a list with 57 cards. 3 more can be added based on what you prefer, or you could change a few things around too. Hope this helped :thumb:

thanks, that is very helpful :)

i do have a quick question/concern though...i am a little nervous putting in four or five cards that have me discarding energy when i only have 10 in the deck, and no way to retrieve them once they are gone.

as i said, i used to play magic a bunch, so energy distribution is a bit of a mystery to me still. also, i'm a bit worried that having as many evolved pokemon as i do of the basic type may leave me a little stranded if my basic pokemon die off.

are these concerns at all valid, or is it just a new player worry?

thanks again.

Just thought i'd put this out there but with the Skuntank idea, YOU have to have a stadium in play to poison.

i was looking at that too, but if i'm understanding the acronyms correctly, jk is suggesting i get some Broken TIme Spaces to take up the place of the stadiums.

ugh...and now a follow-up question: where is a good place to get cards cheap, other than ebay (to try to not get butched by shipping each card separately)? troll and toad, my usual place, wants me to pay nearly sixty bucks before shipping to get the right cards...
