Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

MK Choy is so bad at this game (Nationals report)

Thursday, I arrived to Indianapolis and got to the convention center. I was missing a lot of cards for my LuxChomp deck, so I had to ask people around. I got the main cards from Mystery Thing and Mikey (Magnechu) so I was almost set to go. I registered and hung out a bit, sold some cards, and stuff. I wrote out my deck list in the hotel, and went to sleep without testing at all.

Friday, I found my name and table, with deck list on hand, and waited some more. They collected my deck list, and I pretty much walked around.

Round 1 Jumpluff
I started with Ambipom, he started with Electrike. I attached DCE to it, and got an early prize card. He got the Hoppip into Pluff, Rescued the Trike, attached Warp Energy to Trike, and let Trike be active again. I got my set up, and Tail Coded the Warp to Pluff, since it'll be useless on the Pluff. He couldn't get set up, so I won.
1-0

Round 2 LuxChomp (Andy M.) SP deck #1
Between States and Regionals, I only played an SP deck with LuxChomp ONCE, and that wasn't a legit game, so I never had experience playing against SP. I was nervous when I had to learn during the game as my opponent got early Garchomp C X out but I managed to survive. Eventually, I pulled through and made a comeback.
2-0

Round 3 LuxChomp (Jeffrey A.) SP deck #2
Great, another SP deck. Not surprising, though. However, he got a GREAT start vs my very horrible start.
2-1

Round 4 DialgaChomp (Mark M.) SP deck #3
He got out an early Dialga deafen lock, but for some reason, he misplayed by Turning the Dialga and used Garchomp C X to snipe my Chomp. I proceeded to use my trainers to get set up, and pushed him back a bit. He had to use Dialga to buy some time to set up, but I was able to go past that.
3-1

Round 5 LuxChomp (Josef Bolton) SP deck #4
Of all people to play, I had to go against someone where we knew each other's lists. He has been testing in mirror more than I have so I was nervous about the game. I managed to get my Garchomp C X out first this time, but with him having two Chomps with an enery attached to each of them, I had to snipe the Baltoy. Later on, he got the ERL to kill something of mine, but with the help of Crobat G and Toxicroak G, I took my last two prizes.
4-1

Round 6 Gardy
I somehow got a decent start against his horrible one. He tried to set up, but he prized 3 of his Candies and at least 1 Judge.
5-1

Round 7 DialgaChomp (Stefan T.) SP deck #5
He got early Deafen and I couldn't draw stuff early enough to come back.
5-2

Went out to dinner at Buca, and decided not to test again.

Saturday, I got there early and found out they started the rounds earlier than I expected.

Round 8 Cursegar (Andrew)
Let's just say, a 7 card hand where 6 cards are trainers against a Tomb is not fun.
5-3

Round 9 Gengar (Leah)
She got T1 Fainting Spell Gengar. I let her kill something so my Froggy can Poison Revenge it. She took the chance and used Poltergeist to kill Croak, but I decided to set up and let the Gengar die from poison. She kept playing Crobats and Claydol so after I took my second prize, I used ERL to take the remaining prizes.
6-3

Top cut, I found out I had to resleeve and they merged to flights, so I had to play Kevin Nance and his Palkia lock, or SP deck #6
Game 1
He got his lock out and I couldn't find a way to KO the Palkia.
Game 2
I got quick prizes early but this game was so intense we couldn't play fast. Without knowing how much time was left, time was called and because I was ahead with 2 prizes to his 3, we had to go into Sudden Death.
Game 3
I started with Ambipom and DCE. I attached the DCE to Ambipom, and I didn't want to risk anything, I laid down my Crobat G. He retreated his Luxray GL to Crobat G and used Psychic Bind to prevent my from using Flash Bite again. I played down a Garchomp C and an energy to it just in case and Snap Attacked his Crobat. He got his Luxray GL X out, Bright Looked my Crobat, attached Energy Gain. He used his Collector to get out a Uxie and Downer Azelf. He played the Uxie and he had 5 cards in his hand. He needed to draw into the lightning energy to win. He drew one card, then drew another, and laid down the Lightning Energy he just drew to win.
6-4

I lost in T128 so I spent the rest of Saturday and Sunday hanging around.

Props
Making T128 without testing
People who lent me cards
Steak and Shake
Liar's Poker

Slops
Cancelled flight
Not making at least T64
Having to learn how to play the SP matchup during the game.

If you're bad then I'm sick

MK,

Your an amazing card player who still continues to do extremely well at any and all events. I'm proud of you and all your accomplishments.

If you're bad then I'm sick--literally. I went 4-1 at Nationals but I didn't drop because my ranking was so high (although I wish), I wasn't feeling well and was forced to drop after round 5 (food poisoning).

I hope you can still go to Hawaii. Pokemon just isn't Pokemon without you, Buddy--you make this game complete. Anthony, Eli, Anount, and myself want to see you there!

Keep it touch and I wish you all the best.

Nice job at making top cut, MK. The weekend went so soon though, but it was awesome.

Frankie: Thanks man. Sucks to hear you got food poisoning. I saw your name once and didn't see you at all. I won't be going to Hawaii due to costs
Pop: Thanks
David: SHAKE AND BAKE. We need to play more Liar's Poker instead of Pokemon
Ortizes: Thanks guys.
