Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Moldy Hotel Rooms, Build-a-Bear, and... POKEMON!!!

It's nice to know there are dads out there who truly care about their young childrens hobbies and take that kind of time and dedication to make it work, especially with something as hard as a divorce on your back. Bravo, Wayne.

Awesome article. Its nice to see someone who cares about their children so much that they would be willing to go out of their way to play Pokemon with them. It was a really nice story and I wish I could recount something as epic as everything you've experienced. If you can, write more articles like these. This really made my day.

Well the first thing about any Sneasel deck is you wanted a full bench. After that, any card other than Unown D was a good starter. Igglybuff has free retreat, Wobbuffet made your opponent afraid to atttack, Wooper turned off one of your opponent's attacks (which could stall for a turn or two), and then Sneasel just got right to business doing serious damage for the time straight out of the gate. Igglybuff is a bench sitter to turn off problematic Pokemon Powers and Unown D was right there beside it to reduce damage from your opponent's Dark Pokemon when you faced a mirror.

Eco Gym and Energy Charge made it so you didn't lose your valuable Darkness Energy. Pokemon March and Challenge filled your bench. Gold Berry kept you alive. Trash Exchange recycled your discarded cards. The Rocket's Trap disrupted your opponent and made them misplay thinking you had another and possibly a Here Comes Team Rocket! Double Gust made it so no matter what you started with, 90% of the time or better, you could have a Sneasel out and attacking T1 if you wanted. Goop Gas Attack turned off all Pokemon Powers for a turn. You didn't play it until you had used all of your Pokemon Powers :)

Other than that, it was just flip, flip, flip! With the pressed plastic coins they had at the time (that truly did favor heads), this wasn't the task it is today!

Nice experiences, Wayne! A good read as well! Nice to know a little bit about how the tournaments were run 10+ years ago.

AHHHH memories, just a rushing back like they were yesterday, thanx for the prod I thought I had lost those times, was still playing a haymaker back then, Mewtwo, Syther, Aerodactyl

this is a great article! fun read, i remember when fossil first came out and the line of people buying BOXES of cards was flowing out of store!

good times :thumb:

Inspiring article. Seems you and your kids have led quite a fulfilling life, in this Pokemon World we all live in.

Thanks for sharing your experience, it was a great read.

Its nice to see what the game was like back then (I did play back then but not competitively).

I guess thats why people use sleeves now a days, so the opponent can't rip your deck and throw it at you.

Amazing article! This is something that I will be recomending all my league parents read!

It's so true though that Pokemon brings families together. We had one of our league children, who's parents
had been divorced for 6 years, come and spend time playing pokemon as a family, and they actually got
back together! It's an amazing thing what Pokemon can do, it's not just a simple trading card game. It's a
full blown culture with it's own set of rules, traditions, and social ways. It envokes feelings and moods that
you could never see coming. Some moments of competitivness are stunning, some moments of Spirit of the
Game are compelling and touch your heart. It's truly the ultimate hobby. GO POKEMON!

Could we get a bit better explanation on how that first deck works. I played a little back in the day but always remember playing more Oak and ER SER and don't at all remember Energy Retrieval

Ditto..

Traded fishing for POKEMON in order to bond with my son. When there were no tourneys, we went fishing and with no bites(boring), we had a common thread to discuss..Pokemon. Eventually he won a trip(STS) to New Jersey!I still play and i still find enjoyment playing but alas fishing has risen it's ugly head(lol) and i will be weaning myself. I will continue to play(prereleases) and the odd tourney jus to keep my POP number active! Yes, i am old school and i do play that way in SPIRIT and the players here in the Northwest respect that which is cool. I might add that if i bat .500 i had a very good day!
P.S.
thanks for the old school memory..

It's been a really long time and I didn't build the deck. Also, we only used it for a month or so. I don't remember the exact construction of what we ran; the list I provided I found in an old (very old) Pojo that was written before the STS Qualifiers and which was written by the same guy that gave us the list in line. I'm sure that he, and others, had made changes to the deck well before we got our hands on it.

Sorry I can't be of more help on that one.

Ask me about Dark Gengar+Misdreavous and I can tell you all about how we ran it. It was what we built to replace our Sneasel deck with once Sneasel was banned. It was every bit as consistent and deadly.

I would very much like to hear about that deck :thumb:
