I too can't understand why the LDs decided to not pay any trips after Pokemon USA said thed pay for #1.

Lia: Norwegian nats is May 10th-11th(2 day event) Dunno if that really is important, but its a fact worth knowing

Hi M, Great to hear you are getting 2 days, with the attendance Norway got last year that's the best option.

About the trips.
I can even tell you a worser story.
After our Nationals were announced and the prizes were published, suddenly the LD took away the trip to Worlds.
So what happened?
I am not sure, but our LD claimed he was paying for the trips (so he could take them away like he did).
I think (and beware I am not sure about this) they found out PUI/POP is paying for the first place winners and there was no need for them to pay anything.

This is the way how players are handled in very rare situations.
In my opinion:
There is money to send the 2nd place winners, but it's up to the LD and they refuse.

I think PUI/POP should have done it this way:
Each LD who sends his/her first place winners to Worlds (paid by the LD) gets an additional (second place) trip from PUI/POP for each agegroup.

That way I have the feeling it would have worked out the way it was "planned".
But leaving the option at the LD's never worked and never will work (except in Germany their LD has done a very good job).
And in Slovenia the LD is paying for 1 trip (only in Juniors) but still that's much more than all those BIG LD's in Europe. (Slovenia is not getting any PUI/POP trips, so props for them too).

Not only is this post informative, it down right eye opening.

Could you possibly do us all a favor? In your original post (post #1), it would be interesting if somehow you annotated it with what the 2007 invite/trip structure was.

This would quantify for all to see the disparity between years and maybe heighten awareness with LDs that maybe something should be done this year.

Thanks for the post.
Steve

Denmark also gets a 2-day Nationals :)
Great
I know Michael mentioned it last year he would aim for a 2 days Nationals, but I didn't know it was going to happen already.

What about paid trips in Denmark? Only the PUI/POP ones? Or is the LD also paying for 1 (like previous years)

Well my first setup was to name all trips -> PUI/POP trips, but I decided to call them Trips and only mention those trips paid by LD's to make it look less "negative".
All those years I am on this board I have been called names so many times, called negative so many times, I really don't know how to point on issues like this.
I don't know a way to make it sound less negative as it is. Because no matter how you look at this, it's negative for the International players and a blamage (don't know the word) from the LD sides.
NOT negative towards PUI/POP, because they are doing what looked the best way to get more Int players to Worlds (my opinion).
But I cannot understand how the LD's get away with this.

In general you can state that all PUI/POP provided trips in 2008 for Nationals, were paid for in 2007 by the LD's.

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

Thanks for keeping track of this Lia, I had no idea some countries already had Nationals!

I was wondering, why did the LD in Slovenia decide to pay for the first place trip for the Juniors? It's not on the website. I think it's a good thing, but why the Juniors?

It was given to the agegroup with the most attendance, which was Juniors.

Only POP payed trips.
We have the biggest attendance ever in DK, big enough to have a 2-day Nats, quite a lot of tournies compared to other countries, yet we have the worst prices ever and no LD paid trips (though, that is the same as you guys). Too bad we got a new LD. Sad times. (not counting the big attendance and lots of tournies)

Some information (most of all for those who are complaining about a "cut back" in prizes) (read: NA players).

I only took Masters, but this applies to SR and JR too.

2007 - PUI/POP paid for 34 trips to Hawaii (no invite only were given) this includes 5 for Japan and 2006 Worlds winners
2007 - LD's (Global so NOT PUI) paid for 24 trips to Hawaii

2008 - PUI/POP pays for 28 trips to Orlando ( a lot of invites only are given)
2007 - LD's (Global so NOT PUI) pay for 2 (yes you read it correct TWO) trips
note: those 2 trips are for the German players only, it's their LD who is the only one who is willing to pay for trips.

ALL other International players (as far as I know) are kind of screwed this way.
We don't have the event on our MAINLAND, no way we can drive to it.
Sure I really like the option of getting an invite and I am sure (at least from my country) they are going to be used.
But in General Worlds 2008 will be (again) a USA party with some International guests.

128 seats in Masters.
28 paid invites by PUI/POP so I assume they will be there.
2 paid invites by Amigo for the German Masters.

Rankings + Nationals invites (without trip)
APAC - 9
LA - 6
EU - 48
NA - 34
Japan - 4
Grinder Min. - 4

So 135 Invites total, and that's safe because not all are going to be used.
But how many will not be used?

Japan? I assume they will be used.
NA - Well it's on their mainland and you can get to Orlando for around $300 so very good possible they are going to be used. (even from CA and MX it's not as expensive to get to Orlando)
EU - planeticket around € 1000/$1500 each so not many are going to be used.
APAC same as for EU (not sure about ticket prize)
LA - tickets are much cheaper, but still I don't think they will use all invites.

Let's face it, Worlds 2008 is going to be an USA party again.
I think 40 invites in Masters will not be used due to high costs, so that will make 33 extra spots at the Grinder. LOL and guess which Nation will be most present there.

Well at least that way the USA players can be proud again and state they have the most "world class players" duhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Congratulations for Austria! Big tournament!!!
Backing on topic, it could be useful know when is the final date for invites by ranking.....
In Europe/Africa area there are 20 invites, but how these invites will pass down?

I'm sure there was something on the op website giving a return date for players to accept ratings invites.

*Minimum invites per division. The maximum number of invites awarded at the Last Chance Qualifier is determined by the maximum event size of the World Championships, not by total attendance of the Last Chance Qualifier. Players who earn invitations without Travel Awards must send travel verification in the form of airline itineraries, hotel booking receipts, or other proof of planned travel to [email protected] no later than 7/14/2008 or forfeit their seat into the event. Seats not claimed may be rolled into the Last Chance Qualifier.

France

Jr
1st Olivier M.
2nd Erwan P.

SR
1st Nikola V (but his trip trickles down due to "technical/papers" issue, if I understood the French site correct)
2nd Mickael C.

MA
1st Aurelien D.
2nd Hervé M
3rd Jerome O.
4th Fabien G.

Congrats to Austria for the amazing turnout! 107 players, up from 34 last year!

Wondering how many players the French Nationals had...

I think the 20 invites will pass down in the rankings. For example, if there are 7 players in the top 20 with invites through their National Championships, then the numbers 21-27 in the rankings will get an invite as well.

Will you be using DP5? You may have problems getting the cards, LOL

DP5?! LOL!

We're having BIG troubles this year. The customs have some problems with the government, so ALL Great Encounters stuff are simply stuck on air/seaports since febuary.
Obviously many stores are importing theirselves GE stuff since the release, but its not oficially released by the L.D.
In general lines: serious risks of HP-SW, which is SICK, we're playing in this format since november.

As our nats is a invite-only event, i may start an online Petition with the names/pop ID of the player who are going to play nats, as everyone is tired of this format and claim for HP-GE.
I'll send this petition to POP, but idk if this will work =/
