We're going to NYC for the National Video Game Championships, but I need a little bit of guidance.

Can someone fill me in on the differences between these airports?

Newark Liberty
JFK
La Guardia

Pros and Cons of flying into/out of each of them?
Distance to the Millennium Hotel and Bryant Park?

Anything else I should know before finalizing flight plans with the booking agency?

We're going to do some checking online, but if anyone familiar with this area can contribute their two cents, I'd appreciate it very much!

I havent been to the other 2, but I would think that tho farther by a bit, Newark would be the Best Choice,
It is really easy to navigate cuz of all the signs,

Important question: Are you getting a car or relying on a taxi/public transport?
It makes a big difference.

We didn't think about that... Being NYC, that WOULD be a very important question.

We're not planning on renting a car (unless we absolutely have to).

And our paperwork from Pokemon says that transportation to and from the airport is included, so I think that's covered. The only other thing we'd have to get to would be Bryant Park from the hotel.

We have not decided yet if we'll be extending our stay for some sight-seeing. We had originally planned on it, but with prereleases on the weekend of the 12th/13th, we're more than likely going to head for home right away. So that is what we're banking on at this time.

Oh, if transportation is covered, you could do either Newark in NJ or LaGuardia in Queens. Both are a short trip to Manhattan.
JFK is a bit further out on the Island.

I guess LaGuardia is closest

MIKE YOU KNOW YOU COULD HAVE ASKED ME :p

Newark Liberty >> It is in Newark, New Jersey (right?) it has been a while. You do not want to go to New Jersey it is hell on earth, sorry all NJ people :p

JFK >> Talk about old school Mike, This is where I arrived, and my brother also (from Seoul). Is in NY, quite a ways from where you are headed..

La Guardia >> is In New York City area (ok it is in Queens). I think this is the closest you can get. Good luck getting to 48th and Rockefeller

I suggest not going into New Jersey Mike :O.
No Offence New Jersey people but I did live there for 16 years.

I personally have went to LaGuardia and JFK Mikey. Both are decent. Again be safe, talk to me if you want. Call me and I can help. I believe
LaGuardia has People Movers (those escalator type things ), they are fun to play on.

Oooh, I live near there.

Newark is best to me. I would suggest staying in the Marriot Cherry Hill Sweets. They are exceptionally accomadating, and were very nice. Since it's in NJ you can bypass a lot of trafic if you don't take the Hutchingson Parkway.

Laguardia is decent, but in the middle of lots of traffic.

JFK, I don't like.

Um...homeofmew, LaGuardia Airport is in Queens.

Anyways, if you want to know, the subway and buses are 2 dollars per person, but buses only take change or metrocard. No bills. As for the subway, you can get a metrocard in the metrocard vending machines or ask the guy in the booth.

I think you should take the plane to LaGuardia. It's closer to the event. According to my subway map, I think you can take the Q33 or Q47 to 74th street and then take the Coney Island bound F train to 42nd Street. I'm just reading what my map tells me so I'm not too exactly sure. But I know Bryant Park is right near the train station.

Well, IMO,
Newark, Has the least amount of traffic and congestion, than the other 2, you can usually get out in about 10-20 min after you land,
Drew

No offense? Gee, why would we take offense? Just because you're blowing off an entire state based on some bad neighborhood you lived
in?
The town next to mine was just voted Best Place to Live in the entire US.

If Mike were going to be walking around the rundown areas of Newark, I would agree with you. Newark, or at least parts of it, are a hellhole.

However, he's not going to be doing that. He will be inside Newark airport and then in transportation to NYC. THe only thing that matters to him about Newark Airport is how easy will it be and how long will it take to get from there to Manhattan.
The answer to that is 20 minutes.

From LaGuardia, it could be 15 minutes or it could be an hour. It depends on the time of day.

One big thing, Mike, is don't arrive anywhere near rush hour!! Plan your flight to arrive either around noon to 2pm, or after 7pm.

And speaking as someone born and bred in The Bronx, there ain't no airport in 'da Bronx.

For a view on getting to La Guadia airport (in Queens, as I said in my earlier post), check out one of the episodes of Seinfeld when Elaine is trying to get an unwanted boyfriend on a plane and out of her hair. Hilarious... but true.

heh PokePop I was expecting a responce from you. Of course Newark NJ isn't all that nice, in 2004 Camden New Jersey was rated the most dangerous city to live in. No I lived in a pretty nice place. I live in Bridgewater-Raritan School District, er Sommerset County :p

I just like making a big deal that I like it here in Houston a Zillion times more than New Jersey (it is a Texas thing), I went to school from Clinton NJ, to Piscataway NJ, BR School district, seen a lot of the area myself. Love NJ boardwalk, gotta like it. Cold water.

give poor homeofmew a break I have been there once, and isn't it just cross the river from the Bronx anyway, I donno.
It has been over 5 years since I was at that airport. I now worry about driving I-45 and Beltway 8 to get to Hobby Airport
and have to worry about wack drivers driving across golf courses, and ended up in a ditch on betway 8.

So true. I stay at Newark all the time when going into the city. I might live in Upstate NY, but I still fly to NYC occasionally if I can get a great price. It only takes about 45 minutes. Sometimes when there isn't any traffic, it's 17 minutes to Manhatten. Lol.

I grew up playing in Newark. yes, it's a bad neighborhood, but it's just people. If you drive by or go to an airport there you arent going to get shot at.

Hulk Hogan Random Poseoffs!!!

LOL, hopefully this will be on Hogan Knows Best, great advertising for Pokemon there.

Because it's so close in, flights to LaGuardia are usually more expensive than flights into Kennedy. That's partially offset by the cost of cabfare. Figure $25 from Laguardia to mid-town. From Kennedy its a fixed $35 inbound, but you don't get the fixed rate outbound so its more like $50. NY cabs don't like to go to Newark, since they're not allowed to pick up fares in NJ. They have to come back empty. There are trains from Kennedy and Newark, but I've never taken them. You can also get a municiple bus from all three, but they drop you off at one of the stations, and you'd still have to get a cab to your hotel.
