P!P has announced that they are adding a new age division -- Veteran -- to competitive TCG play. The "Veteran" division will be for players 35 and up. It will join the Junior (10 and under), Senior (11-14), and Master (15-34) age divisions at the start of the new season:

According to P!P spokeswoman Lari Polofs, the new age division will be added because, "We've been seeing an increasing number of older players at the TCG events, possibly because the game itself has been around for nearly 15 years and also because we have more and more Pokemoms and Pokedads playing. Anyone who's been to a tournament in the past several years has seen that the Masters division has been the largest division for some time. This will add some balance to the age groupings."

"Veteran players will have access to special large-print promo cards and other rewards that younger players won't be able to get. We're looking at easy-open card boxes, for example," says Polofs. "In addition, at the higher level tournaments, Veteran players will be allowed to take the monetary awards not as college scholarships, but as deposits into their IRA accounts."

"This makes business sense for Nintendo and Pokemon," she continues. "Younger players don't have a lot of disposable income to spend on cards and gaming accessories. This move allows us to focus on a new core audience that -- frankly -- has a lot more money."

As a 44-year-old player and a proud Pokedad, I'm quite excited about this opportunity.

Careful with the April Fool's jokes that fraudulently misrepresent OP - you could get in trouble. :thumb:

Hmmm. I know it's a joke but I like the idea. It would reduce the number of rounds in tournaments, therefore reducing the length of them. In theory a reduction in half of an age bracket would remove 1 round of swiss and 1 round of top cut. And half would be the key - perhaps a sliding scale? One more judge would be needed and prize support from P!P would increase by 33% (hopefully and not a dilution of the current pool across 4 age groups). Not sure the increases would be worth it for P!P.

Count me in as another person who thinks it's a good idea. The Masters division gets way too large to handle, especially in states with a large playerbase like FL. However, I would make the "Veterans" division 30+ instead of 35+.

Maybe we should start a letter-writing campaign?

You have the right idea, but went the wrong direction with the age. Having just reached the milestone, for reasons of pure self interest, I would love to see a 50 and over division.

Both Lari Polofs and Lari Polof (who may be related) show up in a lot of papers worldwide this time of year, advocating or announcing sweeping changes to orthodoxy wherever it exists, often to find outbreaks of resistance followed by red faced embarrassment.

nah 50 + would be smaller then juniors in most cases....

i'd stick with either 30, 35 or 40...but defenatly not more then 40

Junior (10 and under), Senior (11-14), Master (15-19), Veteran (20 and over)

I also agree that it would be a way better idea, but maybe something like 21+, and to award money instead of scholarships (since I'm graduating :p). I think it's weird that we severely limit the ages of people in juniors and seniors, but masters pretty much opens up 15-50s (haven't seen anyone older than 50 playing yet) which is a huge range.

Are they making cards in large print to accomodate the new age division?

I used to need to have my son read the card numbers for me when filling out the decklists by hand. Thank yo Steve P for your decklist program.

I think I read somewhere that the "Masters Division would have special packs with 10 cards and one card sized flat clear magnifying card-sized piece of optical plastic to help us read the children's cards.
