Its said that this new upcoming mechanic for the game is to be played alongside Pokemon EX by the tagline for the product promo “Use the Break Evolution and Pokemon-EX combo to achieve victory!”. I have a theory for what this may be since this can mean pretty much anything.

I think this will act in a similar way to a "Special Summon"* in Yugioh to where you can play a Evolved Pokemon from your hand as a basic Pokemon. Pokemon "Break" would still be a stage 1 or 2 Pokemon and you can evolve them normally BUT also have the option to play them down as basics for a drawback. For example, "Raichu Break" would still have be a stage 1 Pokemon and can evolve normally from Pikachu but would have a line of text that reads "You can play this Pokemon from your hand as a Basic Pokemon. If you do, [insert drawback here]"

If this is how this mechanic works, I think a reasonable drawback would be giving up an additional prize when knocked out or attacks costing 1 more energy, since you are gaining speed (because you dont need the basics anymore)

Pokemon Break with abilities will be interesting for sure if these Pokemon will be as fast as Pokemon EX.

What do you all think what this Break Evolution mechanic will do or mean?

*A Special Summon is Yugioh is a way to summon a Monster while ignoring any or all of its summoning requirements in most cases.

In order to Break Evolve, you need the BREAK card, the pre-evolved Pokemon, and the Evolved Pokemon.

Right now, this is open to interpretation. The player base thinks right now the BREAK card is the BREAK Pokemon (Raichu) or thinks the BREAK card acts like a Spirit Link card in order to BREAK Evolve but is seems you will need the Basic Pokemon (Pikachu), the Evolved Pokemon (Raichu)
and the BREAK card (Raichu BREAK or Spirit Link like card).

The BREAK card seems to act as a LV. X Pokemon rather than a way to play the BREAK Pokemon instantly.

Sounds more like if Beast King Barbaros was Normal Summoned, but I see what you're saying.

I'm going to guess it's just a revised version of Pokemon SP mechanic from Gen 4. They'll just rename it to accommodate the X/Y theme.
