The Pokémon Company International is announcing a new Pokémon that will appear for the first time in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y this October. The new Pokémon, Sylveon, is a new evolution of Eevee, one of the most beloved Pokémon since it was first discovered in Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue. Players with Eevee can evolve it into one of seven evolutions, like Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon. Sylveon will be the eighth Eevee evolution.

More details about this new Pokémon and how it evolves from Eevee will be shared later this year.

Thank you immewnity for posting this here on the gym!

This evolution of Eevee will probably be either a Normal type or a Flying type. Maybe Dragon but I doubt it. I've heard people joking about how this thing looks like it ate Victini to evolve but when looking at it, it doesn't look anything like Victini. This evolution of Eevee looks pretty cute in my opinoin. I've also heard people saying this Pokemon might have a different type. I extremely and highly doubt that as I think that Nintendo wants to finish the Eevee evolution line BEFORE they add a new type but I could be wrong as Dark and Steel types were added before they did Dark, Dragon, Ice, Rock, Fighting, Ground, Normal, Flying, Poison, Bug, Ghost and Psychic typed Eevee evolutions.

I have heard several plausible explanations for what Sylveon could be.

1) Normal - It has the whole "pink and fluffy" vibe and stylistically it fits in with many of the more recent "pampered pet" or "best of show" style Pokémon. All previous Eeveelutions have pretty much "screamed" their element, but this one doesn't, which makes sense for a Normal-Type. The attacks it was shown to use included a Fire-Type attack, but Sylpheon doesn't give any other indication of being a Fire-Type, so its somewhat diverse set of attacks may also support this.

2) Flying - The ribbons may be to convey the impression of win, so having it float around on them isn't too odd.

3) Ghost - Its bows appear to be made of its flesh/fir and unless it is just a trick of the art style, they don't wrap around anything; there is simply the bow and the ribbon sticking to the same colored flesh. This could be an attempt at a "cute" ghost; instead of being decomposing and having chains, it gets ribbons and a glowing energy aura (as seen in some of the art).

3) Fighting - less plausible than the first three, think of it as a "violent ribbon dancer". Hey, some of us had to do that in P.E. when we were in school; ribbons totally count as a weapon. @_@

4) Ground - It doesn't not look like a Ground-Type, but that is about it. The thing is, unlike all other Eeveelutions, a Ground-Type seems to be the one where players struggle conceptually. A Bug-Type would be hard to make look right, but being an arthropod-styled Eeveelution would at least fit. Making Eevee more "Ground" based than the other Eeveelutions without it looking like a clone of the likes of Sandshrew, Sandslash, or Diglett is a bit trickier.

5) Dragon - A stretch, but the ribbons and the aura could be an attempt at creating an Dragon-Type that evokes certain draconic traits in a hyper cute fashion.

6) Hybrid - Perhaps this is the first dual-Typed Eeveelution... which even if they only focus on combinations and not permutations (e.g. Fire/Psychic counts the same as Psychic/Fire), there would be 135 potential Eeveelutions.

7) New Family - Eeveelutions might be getting a "Contest/Pageant/Misc." split to further de-emphasize violence in the games; this means this could be an already used Type (like Fire or Psychic), but is part of the "Contest" branch.

8) New Type - While unlikely, it isn't unprecedented. Umbreon debuted in the same generation Darkness-Types did. It has been over 10 years since a new Type was added to the video games, but the taxonomical system is pretty arbitrary, and Sylpheon definitely fits the "magical girl" vibe that is basically its own genre. It makes sense to represent this in the TCG, and similar to how some attacks (and Pokémon) were shifted from one Type to another once a new Type was recognized, former "magical" Pokémon might become dual-Types. A "Magic" or "Light" Type wouldn't be out of the question.

I am VERY excited for this eeveelution. I am guessing that it would be a type other than the current eeveelutions making it possible to be Flying, Dragon, Fighting, Ghost, Steel (I seriously doubt it's Steel) and Bug. If you guys have seen the preview video, it gives an idea for what Slyveon can do, and it looks like either a Dragon, Flying, or Normal. Although, I wouldn't think it to be normal due to the fact that Eevee is normal itself. I am obsessed with Eeveelutions, so this will be an excellent addition to my card collection. :)

I honestly think this is a Normal Type evolution. It's Pink and White and has Ribbons. Most Normal Type Pokémon are either White or Pink or a mixture of both. Also, it shoots stars. Everyone knows stars shooting out is Swift. And it shoots out cards, which is most likely Trump Card. This is a Normal Type move that in the Eevee Family, only Eevee can learn. Swift and Trump Card are both Normal Type moves. This Pokémon's appearance and attacks totally scream Normal Type.

Normal/Flying could still be the type option. Swift is a common attack among Normal Types, and some Flying Types as well can have the attack.

There's not much you can really say about either attack. Swift is a reasonably common attack across many different types. Trump Card is naturally learned by 3 Pokemon (Eevee, Slowking, and Minun), and of the Pokemon that learn it from breeding, they're all either Normal or Water types.

If Trump Card can be learned by Eevee... can't any Eeveelution have it?

I still fear this is a Normal-Type, but if Eevee can learn Trump card... yeah.

Based on the names of the other Eeveelutions (Jolteon, Vaporeon, Flareon, etc.) the first half of the name Jolt, Vapor, Flare, etc. gives some indication to the type. So, I looked up what Sylv might mean and Wikipedia came to the rescue.

Sylvan or Silvan refers to an association with the woods. Specifically, that which inhabits the wood, is made of tree materials, or comprises the forest itself. The term can also refer to a person who resides in the woods or a spirit of the wood.[1] In mythology, the term also refers to deities or spirits of the woods.[2]

If Leafeon didn't already exist, I would guess Grass. Perhaps Bug?

Here is a link to the original Wikipedia article.

Perhaps were looking at a Pokemon in a new form for Eevee. It could be an evolved form for Normal Type, but it could be form influenced.
This could mean that how Eevee evolves in the first place by way of influence- taking an Eevee to some spiritual area could influence it to evolve while remaing Normal Type, just taking on a new form.

swanton1717: Way ahead of you; you could have saved yourself some effort checking out the this thread, which predates this "official" news thread. The "silv-" likely comes from silvan, which comes from Silvia, Latin for "woods" as well as the Roman Goddess of the forests and moon. Besides "spirits" it is also commonly associated with specific "fantasy races" common to fantasy stories, like elves... weak but another bit of circumstantial evidence that could indicate it is a new "Magic" Pokémon (whether that is a theme or the highly unlikely 18th Type).

Hmm...the new type has me thinking. Bug could definitely be possible, but so could a new type. I still don't think it could be Normal, even with the attacks. Eevee is already Normal, and it would be pretty dull if Sylveon were Normal as well. Flying could work due to the ribbons and bows, or ghost because of the flowing movements. I'm still convinced it to be Dragon too. You never know, it may be a cute Dragon Type.

I've taken the time to do a small amount of research for everyone and myself.
Here is what I've come up with:
Name: Sylveon

I can't draw any certain conclusions. But after a bit of research I came across the word "Sylph". Which is like Sylv so here's what "sylph" means:
sylph (slf)
noun.
1. A slim, graceful woman or girl.
2. In the occult philosophy of Paracelsus, a being that has air as its element.

With the color being pink, I would say it is for sure female (even though I like the color pink and I am male).

So from what I can tell it will be a female, flying, eevee evolution.

I've heard that theory put forth before. It is a sound theory, with only one major whole; so far all Eeveelution names have avoided that much corruption. That is to say, Sylveon would be the first where the root word had a clear alteration of the letter sound: "ph" to "v". It has happened with other Pokémon, so it is by no means outlandish, and while no where near as cool as the Flying-Type Eeveelutions proposed by several fans over the last decade, it certainly makes sense.

For the record, this is what happens when Gamefreak takes too long to put out an Evolved form; we create our own and become rather attached to them. ;) Playful teasing aside, it really is hard after over a decade to abandon some of these fan concepts, and I really think slowing down the release of Eeveelutions was the wrong plan; three per game (the pattern started in the original) would mean that by now we'd only have two Types left to go, and at least some of us might be a little more used to abandoning fan ideas. It may seem a little silly, but this is the trade off for having a fan community.

Normal/Flying could still be the type option. Swift is a common attack among Normal Types, and some Flying Types as well can have the attack.

You're forgetting the fact that Eevee Evolutions are only 1 type. If it were Flying type, it'd be pure Flying type. It's possible now, because Tornadus is pure Flying.

The possible Type options are... amazingly high, if we are being honest.

As the series progresses, old "rules" are either broken or weren't rules to begin with. For example, every Fighting-Type was at least vaguely humanoid; none would pass for human and many would have "humanoid + extra" things happening, like Machamp and its extra arms... but again the form was roughly humanoid. Then we got the Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion, and Keldeo: all are part Fighting and all are quadrupeds.

The point?

We should no longer assume:

1) One Eeveelution per Type
2) No hybrid Eeveelutions

This can be quite intimidating, since if one of those is true, it means a lot more Eeveelutions. More than one Eeveelution per Type could make sense if the "originals" are going to be more about battles while the second wave are more about contests. Hybrids really are only a shock because it hasn't been done yet; in a bizarre way it makes perfect sense for Eevee.

For the actual Types, remember that what elements are "essential" to a Type are often quite flexible, and sometimes something seemingly unrelated is linked to a Type "just because". For example, ribbon dancing is a "thing", and since Pokémon is largely about battling, if someone wanted a "ribbon dancing Pokémon", nothing says it couldn't be a Fighting-Type since that is one of the closest Type matches for an athletic activity.
