Okay so I've just opened the two dragons theme decks.... FireFang completely destroys WindBlast .

However there is no mention of the Fossil trainers cards being basics for the purposes of starting the game.

In the glossary at the back it states.

Fossil Trainer cards: These are a special kind of Trainercard, that act like Basic Pokémon when put into play. When that kind of Trainer card is in your hand, deck, or discard pile, it is not considered a Basic Pokémon.

So are we back to the Fossil Trainers being just that? You can no longer start with a lone Fossil? Does the latest rulebook supercede the previous rulebook?

This might end up like Mysterious fossil, if its the only card in your hand, you can't start the game with it, because it's only a Basic while in play.

The real question is, can you still START a fossil? Under the WOTC rulings, the last ruling was that you couldn't even start with a Fossil because it was a Trainer, and Trainers couldn't be played until your turn started.

But, the Fossil card rule in the Dragon rulebook doesn't sound like it overturns the original ruling from Sandstorm rulebook. It'sjust explaining that you CAN'T use cards like Lanette's Net Search or Wynaut's Alluring Smile to go get a Fossil, or you CAN'T use Town Volunteers to put it back into your deck. That's how I see.

So, I'd say you can STILL start a Fossil, whether it's the only one in your hand or not. And, I'd say if you only have Fossils in you starting hand, you STILL have a choice to mulligan. Does anyone see it different?

I *realy* don't like having to use a mixture of new and old rulebooks plus the floor rules to determine how to run tournaments. Its much like the legal system where old laws are left on the statue book rather than being replealed. New laws are brought out which contradisct the earlier laws and a mess results that makes for rich lawyers.

I agree that the glossary definition doesn't specifically overturn the Sandstorm rulebook. But if you take it at face value you would be hard pressed to say you can start with a fossil. In the Dragons rulebook it states that you must have a basic in your hand otherwise you mulligan.page 4: breakout box titled What If I Don't have a Basic Pokémon Card in My Hand?

ummm? couldnt you start with a fossle on your bench or active as long as you had a basic pokemon also in play?

Actually if the case is that you can't play fossils as basics to prevent Mull's you can't place them first turn at all no? as the rule states to place as many basics from your hand to your bench as you want and mysterious fossil only becomes a basic once played to the bench???

We will be allowing Fossils to be placed as though they are basics during the setup.

We wont be following the Nintendo rulebook starting procedure for resolving muligans as it disagrees with the floor rules. But we also won't be following the floor rules exactly bacause they aren't right either. FUN FUN FUN

What we will be doing is following the Wotc setup procedure with draw one card as the penalty for a muligan.

Oh and cards that *haven't* been released in the USA will be legal in this tournament. Otherwise we have nothing but grey imports to play with!

Look at all these rules I'm breaking LOL. If I was a TO I could get reported !

SteveP on page four of the latest rulebook it is very explicit that to start you choose a BASIC POKéMON CARD. The fossils aren't basic pokémon cards.
