Non-premier/Unsanctioned Cash Tournaments?

As Ness points out, you are certainly able to organize any tournament you want as long as you don’t involve POP or Pokemon. com. We really don’t want to ruin your fun; companies just have to be careful about these sorts of things.

It is the same reasoning that makes us ban all events held in private residences. There is a PTO who holds an annual tournament/BBQ/pool party at his house. He invites all the local players and their parents. This event is not only perfectly wholesome; it is an awesome promotion for organized play. I am absolutely certain that every one of those children is perfectly safe. I still just about swallowed my tongue when I saw that he had sanctioned an event held in a private residence on our website. Words were had; won’t happen again. Unfortunately that is just the way the world works.

Sorry, maybe I'm dense here, but what is the problem with an event in a private residence? We hold a booster draft for my son's birthday every year in my living room. Obviously, as a birthday party, its an invitational, but could this not be sanctioned? Would it be different if we held it in the community clubhouse?

i'd guess that the first problem OP would have with sanctioning a birthday party 'tournament' is that sanctioned events are supposed to be open to the public...

The idea of such a large scale event in such a fashion is certainly enticing, one off or otherwise..

However my first thoughts were not that this concept should be strictly only applied to this kind of idea. I'd be thinking regular high-risk high-reward events which would essentially replace OP. A situation where the general playerbase would defect, so to speak, from OP to private tournaments. This could then lead to, potentially, even a private Nationals/Worlds etc in the end that would essentially 'replace' the current ones in the eyes of the general playerbase.

Let's face it if the decisions are made to run the game by the player, for the player, in the way we all want it, who are people going to choose? Really? Perhaps in the end we could be the ones who even design the cards.

When I say we here I am not speaking as myself but the player base in general. I think there is a lot more potential here then is being seen.

Or they would exist side by side, starcitygames runs their own magic tournaments and it hasn't been damaging to the main OP. Either way, more outlets for play is a good thing.

Remember, we are trying to draw a large turnout. Afterall, what fun would come from another 100-person tournament? We have dozens of those a year. You are not going to get a 500-person event by hosting it in Podunk, Iowa. You want a large city because it appeals to people as a vacation. Big cities are fun. They give people who aren't as die-hard about Pokémon another excuse to travel.

Welcome to Virginia Regionals. Huge tournament, middle of nowhere, in a convention hall on farm land. 2 Restaurants within a 5 mile radius, both essentially fast food. Main attraction is an out of season amusement park, which was closed for regionals. Richmond is the closest "big" city, but it's basically a giant factory/college. Main tourist attraction is a giant cigarette, not even joking, which is also what the town smells like.

In all seriousness tho, I would love to see a privately run tournament like the one you are describing. I would also be willing to help in whatever capacity you guys need. Running a tournament like the one you are describing has been a dream of mine for a while. I think this could go in a very positive direction.

If a large tournament were to be run in lets say Chicago there are plenty of places outside of downtown which would work to hold a couple hundred people. I know Rosemont has a large convention center, and I imagine there are quite a few hotels in the area with either meeting rooms or ballrooms large enough. Another thing to think about for a Chicago tournament is parking. Parking in most of Chicago is expensive. It might not be as bad if the tournament is free, but paying $20-$30 for parking on top of $10-$20 entry fee adds up quickly. It's even worse if you stay at a hotel downtown.

Rosemont would be a GREAT location, if you're looking to do something in Chicago (while not actually being in the city). Tons of restaurants and hotels. You have the Donald E. Stevens convention center (where Anime Central is held). Many options for public transportation, including free shuttle service to and from nearby O'Hare airport (which is literally right next door), and an L station which connects you to the airport as well, or to go downtown for sightseeing. It's also much, much easier to drive in and around Rosemont than it is in the city itself, for locals who want to come, or people who would rather drive than fly.

Sounds like someone didn't read the brochure and is missing a lot of stuff.

Brochure? I wish I had a brochure. . . I just wish there was something pleasant near the tournament location. It is a little unreasonable that only a hotel Dennys and a Burger King were the only places to eat in a 5ish mile radius. But yes, I would have LOVED a brochure :) Where did you get one?

Please see the POP Sanctioning Regulations

http://assets2.pokemon.com/assets/cms/pdf/op/tournaments/2011/Pokemon_Sanctioning_Regulations.pdf

In particular section 3 Appropriate Venues:

Pokémon Organized Play prefers that all sanctioned events are run in a game store. However, these
venues are not always available to Tournament Organizers. With this in mind, POP allows sanctioned
events to be run in other public locations, such as community centers or libraries. Alternate venues
must be clean, safe, and open to the general public.

Sanctioned events are not allowed to be held in private locations. Tournament Organizers found to be
running sanctioned tournaments in private residences or venues not open to the general public are
subject to immediate loss of all Organized Play privileges.

In addition, Pokémon Organized Play prefers secular venues be used at all times. Non-secular venues
can cause potential participants to feel unwelcomed, whether real or perceived.

A community clubhouse could be an appropriate venue as long as it is open to anyone who wants to attend. If you need to be a resident of that community or to know the code to get through the gate, then in would not be an appropriate venue.

In the specific case of your son's birthday draft I have trouble picturing any situation where sanctioning this is appropriate. If you are having a birthday party for a ten year old at the community club house and a couple of high school kids you have never met show up wanting to join are they going to be welcome? If the answer is no, then this is a private event and it should not be sanctioned on Pokemon.com.

Now, there is nothing wrong with having a tournament where the list of people eligible to play consists of your son's friends. It just isn’t a public event and therefore should not be sanctioned. All the people you want at that tournament can be contacted without needing to advertise it on a public website.

If anyone sees an event listed on Pokemon.com that appears to be occurring in a private residence, please submit a ticket to support.pokemon.com to let us know. This is something that we take seriously and we will cancel the tournament and make sure that the organizer knows that this is not acceptable.

Pete - I asked a question earlier in this thread that I think is important be answered publicly so others aren't afraid of running such an event. Basically, I want to know if attempting to run a large, private event is frowned upon by PUI or if it would put a player or PTO on bad terms with your company. I recited a story I was told about a Yu-Gi-Oh PTO. We'd all appreciate a response.

I've come to learn that the lack of a response to a question like this is sometimes the best that you can get. If they objected to it, they would have responded, as they did to the idea of sanctioning an event at a private residence.

In order to say yes to something, they have to get the lawyers to sign off on it. That would be equivalent to them sanctioning it, which they can't do. By saying nothing, they are saying they do not object.

I love this thread - thanks Ness

This leads into one of my events that my store in ST. Louis (Yeti Gaming) will be holding in February, 2012.

Top 8 players are GUARANTEED a Mewtwo EX as a prize.

Places 9-16 Get a premiere item (in the past it has been a monster binder, Ultra Pro Binder and Sleeves, Japanese Sleeves or other such item).

It is a $10 entry event, with each player getting a pack of EX on entry.

Be prepared to see more details on this in the tournies section.

WE have had GREAT success with this in Yugioh doing a win-a-duality, win-a-solemn, win-a-rabbit, and the soon-to-see win-a-bus.

Oh, and we plan to have Troll&Toad there as well!

On we go!!

In the distant future, the guys from The Top Cut and I would love to start up an alternative tournament circuit similar to what StarCityGames does for Magic. Of course, that will take a lot of work and planning, but it's a goal that is in reach. Anything like this would be huge for expanding the game, and it would provide a lot of excitement that we haven't seen in a while. Unfortunately, Pokemon is behind the curve on many aspects when compared to other games, but that doesn't mean it can't catch up or even surpass them; it just takes the time and effort to do so.

Is there even a ballpark ETA on these events as of now?

No, it's a very far away goal as of right now. On the other hand, I certainly didn't expect to be able to provide commentary on the World Championship Finals... so who knows?

Ness, allow me to be blunt and say exactly what PokePop is saying above.

You are not going to get a response from TPCi about this.

If you get ANY response, it will be a blanket "no".

Consider the silence to be an implicit "yes", and MOVE ON.

Consider the First Rule of Fight Club. That's essentially this situation.

You guys do understand I wasn't looking for endorsement or permission, right? I politely asked (twice) if promoting such an event would put a player or PTO on bad terms with their company. Whether or not this event happens is largely dependent on this question being answered. I'll tell you I personally am not getting involved until I get an answer, and I'm sure PTOs who have useful knowledge in setting up an event like this will be reluctant as well. I'll e-mail if need be, but I can't help but laugh at how content you guys are with a company just ignoring their customers. I asked a legitimate question, I asked politely, and I expect an answer. That's how the real world works. Thanks for trying to explain it to me, though, Bullados.
