HONOLULU – A day before the presidential election, Barack Obama announced the death Monday of his grandmother, who helped raise him and who he praised as the cornerstone of his family. The Democratic presidential candidate announced the news in a joint statement with his sister Maya Soetoro-Ng. He said his grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, had died peacefully after a battle with cancer.
He said: "She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances."
The candidate learned of her death Monday morning while he was campaigning in Jacksonville, Fla. He planned to go ahead with campaign appearances.
Late last month, Obama took a break from campaigning and flew to Hawaii to be with the 86-year-old Dunham.
Obama said the decision to go to Hawaii was easy to make, telling CBS that he "got there too late" when his mother died of ovarian cancer in 1995 at 53, and wanted to make sure "that I don't make the same mistake twice."

Yeah, I heard this on the news earlier. Very sad. Too bad she isn't alive to see the results :(

Man...I feel for Obama. That's just horrible, of all the times too. It was good of him to at least get to see her one last time before her passing. May she rest in peace.

man...... she was only nearly 24 hours away from seeing her grandson become president.........

That is just so terrible. She had to survive a few more hours, to live one of the proudest moments of history. Rest in peace.

California GOP Files FEC Complaint Over Obama Visit to Grandmother
By Matthew Mosk

Perhaps the most ill-timed press release of the 2008 campaign arrived shortly after 1:30 p.m. today, sent by the Republican National Committee.

The release forwarded word that the California Republican Party filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission, in part because of a visit Sen. Barack Obama made to his dying grandmother.

"Obama for America violated federal law by converting its campaign funds to Senator Obama's personal use," the release stated. "Senator Obama recently traveled to Hawaii to visit his sick grandmother. This was the right thing for any grandson to do -- at his own expense -- but it was not travel that his campaign may fund."

At issue was whether the trip should have been paid for with campaign funds, based on the law that forbids candidates from using such funds to pay for personal travel. The Obama campaign said the trip had been vetted with lawyers beforehand and was allowable. The Republicans argued that, because Obama did not campaign during the quick journey to Hawaii, it should not have been a campaign expense.

But filing the complaint today now seems to have been ill-advised, if not legally, then certainly politically.

Obama and his sister released a statement this afternoon announcing that their grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, died peacefully after a battle with cancer.

Not to side track here, but I just have to point out that change isn't always good. >_> (for example I can start giving you free cookies or I could make a law that bans cookies)

Its really to bad that she didn't live to see the outcome of the election as I'm sure she would have wanted to be there for him no matter what the outcome.

No, this does not make me an Obama fan, I just feel sorry for the guy.

wow are they serious! did the Democrats file a complaint on the Republicans For Palins VERY expensive spending habits on her new clothes??? They need to know its a Presidential Election , NOT a runway for her to show off the latest trends.

IMO- people would most likely want him to spend $ to visit his dying grandma than to buy $300,000 clothes.

OBAMA '08!

A better comparison would be to ask if McCain chose not to ask for reimbursement for travel on his wife's personal jet for the period when he suspended his campaign.

Frankly, I don't care about McCain's travel reimbursements for non campaign activity or Sara's Neiman Marxist behavior. Let conservatives decide whether these two genuinely reflect their movements principles.

God bless Toot, and support her family in this time of personal loss.

Yah, it's really bad to die on the day your grandson may make the greatest triumph of his lifetime. RIP Toot.

Well....best of wishes.. for Obama's Grandmother.....and Obama....
I guess it was good that he had visited her....

Who cares if Obama's Grandmother died no offence to anyone but why pokemom
Some people have something called compassion. If you wish not to show it, then don't. You do not have to assume everyone does not care...

RIP Toot.

The GOP's complaint IMO is insensitive but it is not going to have a large impact (It was released a day before elections...) This is pretty much a desperation move, more than anything.
