Could we maybe use a different term than "marked cards"? I always think of the old westerns where guys are sitting in the saloon and one guy says "Hey, these cards are marked!" and then the gunfire starts.

A lot of people hear "marked cards" sort of feel like it is intentional.

How about "worn cards" or something?

Problem is that the Marked Cards covers a lot of different issues. If we had "worn cards" as a different situation, we would have to also have to have stuff like " cards with cheeto fingerprints" and "sleeves that are different lengths" as different situations. In reality all of those situations lead to identical issues in game play and since we make it clear that none of them are considered cheating it really should not require separate call outs.

How about "marked cards - but we're not saying that you marked them intentionally" or "cards with stuff on them that may or may not be edible." That would clarify things a bit.

"Soiled or Spoiled Cards and Sleeves"

a long phrase will be shortened: "unintentionally marked" will be shortened to just "marked"

not so sure that I'd want "soiled" cards. far too much risk of sniggers from the back.

non-uniform works for me

better then "marked" and covers all your basis.

p.s If you end up using this, I call credit :D

snigger: a somewhat disrespectfull, quiet laugh. A laugh at someone else's expense/misfortune. A snigger isn't a nice laugh.

For my benefit is "snigger" an uncommon expression over in the USA?

[vvvvvv edit: Snickers would be brand name for a chocolate bar over here that used to be called Marathon, not sure why the name was changed to Snickers. vvvv]

I think this is bound to happen in any kind of competitive atmosphere.

To be honest, of all the games I've played or witness be played, I think Pokemon has the best community by far. I'd argue that if you were to play M:TG or YGO or Warhammer or any other collectible, competitive game you'd get stuff like this more often. Not an excuse, I know, but we do have it easy.

Sorry that your area isn't to your liking. Hopefully you'll spend your money/time on something that you can enjoy more!

Best community if you're not playing them. If they misplay you dont let them take it back( I do occasionally), but being called a cheater because they are starting to lose, or in my case, even winning!

This guy at brs was up 6-1 with game next turn, and I accidentally dropped a crobat out of my deck. Not only was this NOT going to do ANYTHING to the game, but he calls me a cheater and says that I am trying to stack my bench.

I was mad man...and this is a 43 year old guy! Not a kid at 15 like myself..

Words are important. I never liked the term "marked cards" with regard to damaged sleeves or cards and would prefer we just call the card "damaged". Marked cards in pokemon has a specific and uncommon definition, but as it does not correspond to the lay person's definition, it is evocative of cheating and should be avoided. Why does a game which makes up so many unique words have to use a term from adult card games to describe a game state?

BTW, I also don't like the term "warning", as this has caused problems with some sensitive Juniors. We should use "reminder" instead.

On topic, I cannot see how 40% of the deck being worn sleeves, with no pattern present, could give possible advantage and I would have just suggested to the opponent that its time to get new sleeves for the next event. Of course, if in a judging situation, I would have no choice but to treat it as black and white and require a re-sleeving.
