Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Oklahoma state championships

Argh, 4-3 will just not do. The cards were just not going my way that day. However, great job to everybody, and great job to the staff for keeping the tournament smoothly run. I hope to redeem myself on Saturday! Hope to see you all at TX!

Kyle ended up beating me 2-0 in Top 2. I had a decent setup game 1, though he had an amazing start, and I had supporter trouble in the beginning, but managed to get down to 2 prizes. Game 2 I just had a bad hand + bad prizes. It was a great tournament.

Congrats man! Glad to hear you did so well!

I would like to make a special comment about the State Tournament. I notice that people ask about Seniors and mainly masters, but I want to give props to the Juniors. I have to say that these two kids (Ryan H. and Ian M.) played one of the best games to watch I've ever seen in a tournament game. Both of them showed courtesy and enthusiasm while playing. Seeing them play makes me think about how the game should be played. It's to have fun, not to win. They showed true spirit of the game and I think that some of our older crowd could have learned from these two.

I would also like to second this and mention the top cut for Seniors was a epic battle. The 75 mins. went by in a flash and both Josh B. and Jacob T. had three games which were absolutely fantastic. It was a real pleasure to see these two fine individuals enjoy the game they played. They to showed the same courtesy and enthusiasm as the juniors did. We typically push aside Jr./Sr. into the corner and only focus on what the masters are doing.

A note to the Seniors who played. Thank you for making our day, judging, smooth. You all managed your games and the game state. You were polite and courteous when the small and simple issues arised, which makes a big deal when you have to sort out the issues. Thank you.

Also a final thank you to Dr. D and Old Man for another fine Oklahoma event.

Jeremy (lead judge, Sr.)

PS...
Josh B. - 1st
Jacob T. - 2nd.
Tomas P - 3rd
Adam C. - 4th

I will not say what any individual was playing. It's their choice to say what they played.

Andy Meier with Luxchomp vs Kyle St. Charles with Luxchomp
Andy Lost

Top 2

Kyle St. Charles vs Austin Cook

Pretty good tournament, sucks that there it was mired some by the deck list problems. I enjoyed it myself, and had a blast. Darn for getting 4th. Can't wait for next weekend.

Interesting note:

4 Texas players in the top 4, with 4 Luxchomps. Food for thought.

And...most of them were either my build or based on my build, WHAT UPPPPPPPPP!!!

^ Also food for thought hahaha.

Jacob Tamm, I never got to say congrats to you man, you're a frickin beast always!

Spectacularly smooth tournament, Old Man! Wonderful job to you and the staff!

I hope Texas is just as smooth :)

Hmmm I wouldent call the sleeve shenanigans smooth Rokman. I suggest any serious player to avoid Oklahoma at all costs. Listen to the former National Champion.

lost ds

Hey
My genius son left his ds on the table by the pool at Ok states. I am hoping a Pokemon player picked it up and not a hotel patron.
Please PM me if you found it. Its a ds lite in a chewed up nerf case. The screen has missing pixels in it too.
Thanks

so what exactly went down with the sleeves? I keep hearing about that in passing... but never really got the story. lol

Very long story cut very short. The staff determined my opponent and I had what could be perceived as marked sleeves and received dual penalties resulting in game losses in top cut. We played one game to decide who advances.

...dang. That's harsh bro...

It's gonna happen again at Texas States, Josh. :p

That would be awesome if it did. Top 4 two State Tournaments? I'll take that any day.

And congrat to Austin and Kyle (and I guess Andy :p) for placing 1st and 2nd. There was almost no way I was going to beat you Austin, your deck was too teched for the mirror for me. Great games though!

Sorry Milan
I missed OK states so it my top four spot
I'm gonna be working harder than the rest
It's mine for the taking
As well as first place

I am glad you complemented the Juniors. As one of the seniors Dads, I was going to complement the seniors also. But nobody beelives it when a Dad says it so I am glad you also complemented the seniors. Congrats to Josh who won the tournnament and won it with class.

It was an awesomely fun tournament- thanks so much old man

Pfft, you make 4th AGAIN?! Nah not going to happen. You know I'm going to beat you Josh, like always... If we go against each other consider your score DOWN!!! :D

Now martin, we could've went with a DQ for both of you. Would you have preferred that? I doubt it. Your reputation speaks for itself. Try it at Nationals and I guarantee it would be a DQ without hesitation.

That was the one and only speed bump in the tournament. And I was just upset about it as you when it happened.

But on Sunday I talked with a lot of the judges (not just the head judge) and if they were so compelled to issue the penalty, I have to agree that the problem had to be convincing enough to give the game losses. Even though the sleeves weren't marked maliciously, that's the rules... it's just unfortunate =\

I don't think you were singled out, though. Especially after I talked to them. Even though it felt that way while it was happening.

Reputation? I've never once been pulled aside for marked sleeves ever in a tournament and that remark really comes off as a little snide. Try what? That statement even implies that the issue was deliberate on my end. I have only played in almost every region in the country this year with no issues until this tournament. In fact, through each event in 5 different states spread through the country I even used the same sleeves that were in question which were a gift from a special person. I'm sure because i have banned before for an isolated incident that was not in a tournament environment it's easy to present a case that I am capable of trying to play unethically. This is false and anybody that has spent any time getting to know me knows that isn't my prerogative as well. Fact of the matter is, this tournament was not Nationals and my deck did pass deck check initially by one of your staff. In the future I hope you can pick staff that can administer the deck approval pre tournament more effectively and prevent an incident like this from happening again.

Fact of the matter is the only "reputation" I have is being extremely good looking and winning lots of tournaments in this game. That is what I'm about and I'm not going to let anybody try to say something that takes away from that.

While we're talking about the judging side of OK State, I want to say something about judges who don't know the rules of the game. Simply put, the judge in my top 16 match did not know that Sudden Death (resulting from game 2 ending after time) requires a coin flip to determine who goes first. I was told by this judge that I had the decision since I lost game 2. If I had not known better or if I was the kind of unethical person who took advantage of such a situation, I would've decided who went first in spite of the illegality of that action. The same judge also thought that Engineer's Adjustment was a trainer (and thus ineligible for play under Vileplume) when the card was clearly in the Supporter spot on the table.

Judges who don't know the basic rules of the game, including how top cut is run, need to either be pulled aside and given a refresher course or simply not asked to judge again.

This is not a slam on judges in general. I just do not understand why the judge in my game did not know the rules. I do not travel for hours to tournaments expecting to have to correct judges.
