I'm a bit disappointed seeing as all the non-EX Pokemon in the set/deck are complete garbage except for Bronzong. I must say I really like this new Hyper Tool mechanic on how it's only restricted to EX's. Gives slower deck something to slow down are insanely fast basic attackers. Unfortunately it probably won't be enough to make Stage 2's playable until we get more search/consistency options.

A lot of people are underwhelmed with this set, but it should form some new archetypes. Metal is the obvious one and it will most likely be good (you just got to watch out for Pyroar). Strafe-type decks with Gengar are potentially good, especially with so much switching options. M Manetric decks would probably be top tier if it wasn't for the fact that it has the worst Weakness in the game. Still, people will probably find a way to play it (maybe with a load of Mewtwo and Beartic?). We also have plenty of new trainers that will change the way we play, and we have the return of VS Seeker.

I'm gonna have to disagree on Manectric, especially with Mew EX in the game. Normal Manectric has a devastatingly good second attack with the Flare tools, and great energy acceleration otherwise. Sure straight Manectric would suffer against fighting, but it's attack cost is so minor that it can fit into a lot of decks fairly easily. Especially when you consider it counters Yveltal really hard.

I can think of a lot of interesting strategies starting with some of these cards. Not sure if they'd be winning strategies but definitely interesting. Almost worth getting back into pokemon to find out!

Heh. Too bad Tool Scrapper is gone from Standard. Would be more useful than Tool Retriever against those Team Flare tools.

Dimension Valley might make more psychic cards playable. Even with Megaphone out, Trubbish could make a comeback with last resort (Tool Drop + Dimension Valley + Flare Tools + Last Resort).

Not really.

You should pose this as a question in 'Ask the Rules Team' once the set is released, but I believe the effect would be the same. There's no text that actually blocks the process of using Tool Retriever on Team Flare tools. The tools state "If that Pokémon is Knocked Out, discard this card," which implies going into your own discard, if it wasn't for the next line: "Return this card to the original owner's discard pile if it is ever removed", so in the process of removing it from your pokemon to go into your discard (or hand, as in the case with Tool Retriever), it goes "SIKE!" and puts itself into your opponent's discard pile.

Of course, there's a big chance I'm wrong. And without the exact text from an English language card the Rules Team won't make a ruling.

Huh? I'm talking about removing the Tools from your own Pokemon. I mentioned nothing about gaining ownership of the card during a game. I'm aware of the extra text.

I think inmanjm's point was that Retriever and Scrapper will work the same on Flare tools. Scrapper straight up discards; Retriever doesn't on its own but triggers the effect on the Flare tools that discards them when they become detached.

I've been trying Honchkrow and malamar-EX with dark trance hydreigon, sleep and 120 every turn is pretty funny.

I'm considering using Malamar-EX in a few more decks, it's quite handy to get a sleep so easily and so regularly. I see Kangaskhan-EX/Aromatisse having a field day with it.
