Thanks for the answer, Mike. Any insight on why the decision was made to offer cards with such a short shelf-life?

I agree with this post/idea and posted it myself 4 1/2 years ago!

Two ideas...

1. Have a core set of cards, but update the "Core" from time to time with some rare or cards specific to the format to get people to buy them.

2. Alternatively, I really like ShadowCard's idea of having a core set of cards that are grandfathered in.

I think it boils down to this - Don't give me any more Potion cards! I have enough to build an automobile with already!

It was a compromise with management. They've always been a bit hesitant to turn cards from a set into a promo card unless there's precedent set in Japan. The tin promos are technically cards from a set, but because of the alternate art, and the fact that they were promos in Japan it means that they can have a promo symbol instead of a set symbol on the card.

We were able to use existing precedent to slap a special treatment on cards from a set because we weren't truly making them promos (in the sense that they retained their original set symbol). Take a look at the Burger King promos from last year. They all have a special treatment, but retain their original set symbols. Or the Countdown Calendar. Special treatment, original set symbols. Or that promo box with Cynthia's Feelings/Bebe's Search/Professor Rowan that came out a couple years ago. Special treatment, original set symbols. The OP promos fall in the same category.

I wish they would reprint the base sets and gym leader heroes sets; but make them betetr.

EX: Hitmonchan Base set has 70 hp, did 20 for [F]. Instead. Hitmonchan Base set reprint 2010 could have 90 hp, and do 50 for [F]

50 for 1 on a basic o_O... thats just asking for more donks

Core sets are great, and it probably could work, but problem is that companies cater to their main customer base first, and a core set doesn't help casual players and collectors, so it wont be made, It's a shame but it's as simple as that.
