Remember in 99-01 when Pokemon was incredibly popular? Basicly every toddler collected cards, and every teenager had something to do with them. Do you think it's like that way now, but we don't acknowledge it? I know now more than ever there are TONS of teens and adults who play. I also know lots more kids are starting to collect again. Prices for new cards that are staples (IE Char EX, Lugia EX, Steelix EX, Ray*, Latias* etc...) are through the roof! I certainly think Pokemon has made a major comeback. How about you?

yeah, but i dont think that'll ever reach it's old popularity. and people will still be byist (or however you spell teh word) towards teh people who play it (grr). but i do believe that it has made a comback.

Bias.

Yeah, I do have to agree with you, people will be against it because of their narrow-minded view of Pokemon is childish. But who knows? If they advertise correctly, show cooler new cards, a new system, and show that the game is for the intelligent, then maybe it can come back to it's original state.

First thing PUI should do is remove the words "Recommended for players ages 10 and up" from its products.

Pokemon was extremely popular when it came out, and then lost quite a bit of its popularity.
Hey, same with Yugioh. And magic. And almost every other big card game. That's just how it works.

XDXD. I think they should change it to: "Reccomended for young adults and up".
Oh, come on. Pokemon is really a game for people of all ages. When a young person becomes interested in Pokemon, it is easier for him to spread the word and get his friends to play, as the minds of young people are much more malleable (it will be significantly more difficult for an old person to get his friends to play).

The young people are less rigid in their interests and biases (like biases against a "silly game that's just for losers"- something many people feel about Pokemon)) and it is easier to convert them to playing Pokemon than it is to convert older people.

If you see the invites given out at US Nats, you'll notice that PUI likes the 10 and under group. I must say, that some of the most annoying, contemptible Pokemon players are in that group, but it has its good qualities, so I like -10 too. Us older people shouldn't just disrepect them, and discourage them from playing, just because we're too "cool" to play with them or be seen around them.

I have no problem with the 10 year olds that play. But it's usually the 10 year olds that follow the fads and will move out of Pokemon making it very unpopular. It's easy to see this. The people that are around 20 like me will stay with the game for a longer amount of time, resulting in a Magic the Gathering type of thing-Having the card game stay on the market for more than 11 years.

Burninating Torchic, I have to disagree on the MtG thing. It wasn't as popular in its beginnings, and a result of that are skyhigh prices for old rare cards (the 5 mox, black lotus, time walk, timetwister, and ancestral recall), we're talking about 900 US$ a card here! it gained popularity later, in 1996-1997, as far as I know...

and recently, at least by wotc says, it started to get more players coming back because of the power level of the new cards jumping up (as well as the prices - 12$ for a rare land? damn!)

pokemon came to the states when i was in...ohh...4th grade i believe. at that time, most of the people my age or a year or two younger than me were interested. that interest continued for maybe two years, but after people entered middle school, people realized that others would make fun of them.

students in late 6th grade thru 8th grade just felt the need to move onto other things and pick on the kids who stayed with pokemon. those that were still interest in pokemon either maintained that interest or just fell out of it and moved onto other things. this kind of explains why there are so few players in the 11-14 age category.

Just why did Pokemon lose it popularity?
Over saturation, basically.

You couldn't turn around without tripping over Pokemon bandaids or whatever.

Well some saw it as a big fad when it first came out and then after a while began to die down. Kind of like Tickle Me Elmo, Gigapets / Tomogatchi, Furby and other crazy fads that happened around that time. Also, most kids that were in it, got old and thought the game was just for kids because everyone else thought so. But, Pokemon is still living and kicking strong which makes me happy. :)

Only reason why Yugioh lossed its popularity is because they messed with the sets, they reprinted every card like 3 times which brought the value of the cards down dramatically, I remember when i had 1st edition Jinzo and it was worth 100, then they reprinted it and now it is worth 5-10, also another reaso why it lost its popularity was because of restricted format(which i like) people couldnt handle not using their favorte decks like CHAOS, everyone had to run CHAOS, now that it got banned people are like how am i supposed to win, well they just dont like using strategies. Thats what makes pokemon so great, there is some good strategies, in order to compete in big events you have to think 3-4 turns ahead. I think Pokemon is still very big, People(like me) dont want a bunch of people to know thati am playing pokemon, It is kind of embarrassing but, i only play because of scholorships.

I remember when pokemon was like the über pro back in times, i remember the popularity got so high that everything with pokemon in it's name was banned from the school i was at when i was little. Pokemon has never been the same after that.

I would think that the biggest reason that pokemon declined after its Peak, was for 1 reason, WOTC Eliminating the 15 and UP age Group. This hurt the game so much, and they did it for the wrong reasons, as much as they said it was because that what PCL wanted, it wasnt, It was cuz, they wanted to get those players into MTG and make more money that way, then having to pay royalty fees cuz it wasnt their game.

However, Pokemon is increasing its players since PUI took over... There is 1 huge way to find out... Go to the rankings and then see how many players played last yr in tournaments, and this year. Last time I checked, it was almost 600 or greater increase... Which is good... :thumb:

In Marketing it's is called the seasons of products, has for Mexico, Pokémon hit very strong first but without support it start to die slowly the evolution of the products (new marketing, new target market and stuff) make return but without the correct support is useless this effort for living, Pokémon is a great concept but I think that now it looks old fashioned, a new point of view is need it, in my area Pokémon players are more or less my generation the one who saw the cartoon on TV, and those are the more loyal to the game as for the GB players that also plays the TCG they are more interesting in the GB instead of playing cards

The TCG decreased slightly when all the people who jumped on the fad quit.

But what really made the TCG decline was WotC's removal of the 15+ devision.

At the first STS, there were hundreds (near 1,000) players. Shortly after, WotC removed the 15+ devision, and by the time Nintendo took over, virtually no one played Pokemon.

WotC is responsible for Pokemons decline. No one else.

PS. By "WotC", I also mean all their international entities and such.

I used my school backpack at the 2003 STS.

I returned to school the next day and forgot to clean out all the cards. My locker neighbor saw them and said, "You brought pokemon cards to school, I'm gonna tell on you" He didn't, I gave him a share of cards :)
