Pokemon Format: The Cube

Have old cards lying around? Nobody to play unlimited with? I am here with the solution for you!
It is called "The Cube."

What exactly IS The Cube?
Adaptaed from Magic, The Cube is a format consisted of any Pokemon Card ever printed in English, however, only 1 copy of a card may be used.

How do you make a deck?
~ The Cube is a pile of 300+ cards. Each of the players randomly makes 4 "Packs" of 15. Then a regular draft occurs.

Rules of the game:
~ 4 Players ideally.
~ Players take their turns in a clockwise order.
~ You may mulligan once. You do this by placing X amount of cards on the bottom of your deck, then drawing X until you have 7.
~ There are no prizes, but points. Each player starts with 6 points, and when they reach 0, that person is eliminated from the game.
~ Every Pokemon is considered a "Basic Pokemon."
~ Every Pokemon may be attached as an Energy Card, and provides 1 of each energy at a time. This effect also applies to when a Pokemon is in the Deck or Discard
Pile.
(Example: If I had a Slowking HGSS active, which takes 1 Psychic and 1 Colorless. I could attach 2 Pokemon and that would provide the Energy needed.
~ You may play up to 2 "Energy" per turn. [Playing an actual Energy Card still applies to the 2 Energy per turn rule]
~ You may play 1 "Trainer Card" per turn. A Trainer is classified in this game as a Supporter, Stadium, Trainer, or Tool.
~ If you deck out, you shuffle your discard pile and it becomes your deck at the beginning of your next turn.
~ There are 2 ways to play a Lv. X Pokemon; you may Level Up normally, or you may choose to play it as a Basic Pokemon. If you choose to play it as
a Basic Pokemon, you lose 2 Points when it is knocked out.

Other Rules:
~ Treat any power that says "When you play this to evolve your Pokemon.." as "When you play this from your hand."
~ Special Conditions only apply before and after the turn of the person that was affected.
~ Spread attacks only effect the player being attacked.
~ Attacks based on Pokemon in play only effect the 2 People involved in the attack (such as Jumpluff HGSS).
~ Cards that say "Put Damage counters anyway you like" may be used on all players (such as Claydol SV).
~ If you are using Ditto (Fossil) it becomes the Pokemon on whose turn it is. When it is the Ditto players turn, Ditto becomes the Pokemon of the
person being attacked.

Cards that are banned currently:
~ Any card that searches for an energy.
~ Any Trainer that gets multiple Pokemon specfically (Pokemon Collector, Roseanne's Research, etc.) However, ones that get them at random are allowed (such as Quick Ball, Dusk Ball, Master Ball, etc.)
~ Bronzong (Stormfront): Trading a card for 2 Pokemon was too good.
~ Nidoking (Rising Rivals): It was decided that in a multiplayer format, taking 2 Damage Counters would affect the outcome too much.
~ Any Pokemon that lets you attach Energy via Poke-Power/Poke-Body.
~ Any Pokemon that puts damage counters on other Active Pokemon between turns (such as Mamoswine GL).

If you have any questions, please ask. I am sure I missed something. lol.
Any improvements are welcomed too. :)

I can't believe I didn't think of this, but.......I don't see why you've made it into a different game from regular draft.

Having it a normal draft wouldn't of been as fun. This makes it random also makes it easier as making the cube would be alot harder having to deal with evolutions and the like. Also ours has a metapod how many times in a real game will you drop a metapod ?!

In addition,

~ There are no prizes, but points. Each player starts with 6 points, and when they reach 0, that person is eliminated from the game.

Your also eliminated from the game if you have no pokemon in play just like a normal game.

Sabett: In a regular draft you cant have a Rocket's Mewtwo active and a Crystal Lugia Benched with a Holon's Magneton attached. The game is really fun, you never know what you are gonna get, or what combo you may end up with using really odd cards.. Such as Ludicolo DX and Slowking HGSS or Magnezone SF(That gets back energy) and Briney's Compassion to get back the Pokemon you just attached as an energy.

IDK, I'd rather mutant draft, with the select best of pokemon cards through the ages. This has a bunch of unnecessary rules, and odd ones at that. Either way though, at least the idea of making a pokemon cube has been brought to my attention. I don't have to tell you what to do.

Why can't you exactly?

Also, I want it to be clear I'm talking about mutant draft, not normal draft. sorry I wasn't clear about that

Oh ok. Mutant Draft is a totally different thing.
We just made this as a way to use your old/new cards in a unique way that can stimulate your deck building ability, and includes a fun factor.

Hmm, I'm not too keen on multiplayer, reminds me a bit of rumble, lol sorry, but seriously I've wanted to mutant draft on a regular basis, but never been able to, and have a reason to learn about older cards, and I now have that. What's crystal Lugia btw?

The rules may seem unnecessary but they are there for a reason. If you get a chance to play a game you'll see why. :thumb:. Ah wow i forgot about about mutant draft though those were fun times.

Well like I understand how all the rules work with each other, it's just the new format of playing that seems odd to me.

Crystal Lugia
It's not actually named Crystal Lugia, we just call it that because of the look of the card.
ok thanks, aptly named.

Reader: Sort of. You pick your packs at random, but then you do a draft format to decide what will be in your deck.

In magic I would control the amount of each color that was to be picked from for the packs. Like I randomly pick out of specific piles to create the secondary pile to create the packs.

Like lets say green represents 2/15 of the secondary pile where you make the packs, and you have 4 people playing. Each one would need 3 packs, so that's 6 green cards per person, and then 24 altogether. So you would pick out 24 green cards randomly from the green pile cards in your cube to throw into the pile where packs would be made from randomly choosing cards. Then you would repeat the same thing for the other colors, assuming they were at the same ratio, if the ratio was more or less, then you would change the amount you take propotionally. And then make packs randomly from the secondary pile. This way you can create an equal amount of colors across the board, without rigging the drafts, such as making each pack contain 2 green cards, 2 red cards, etc. Because that would end up to you passing to your opponent, noticing that there was only 1 green card left, and realizing you took a green card. Although, I guess this isn't a big of an issue in this other way of playing pokemon.

I see what you are saying.
In the Magic version of the Cube, there is no Mana. You just get to play 1 card per turn.

We do have the types of Pokemon spread out pretty evenly though, to where everyone will end up with a wide variety of types in their deck.

What? There's mana. You even put in non basic lands into the cube, and have basic energies available to you. You can also play as many spells as you're able to. I think you might be thinking of DC10 and variants, but that's just limited by a set number of mana each turn, not spells. It's just like a normal draft in magic.

the version we played was set that way. and yea non basic lands were in the cube and didnt count against the one card a turn rule.
