I don't have the exact answer but it was something like "Believe it or not, there are world championships for the card game and video game with these creatures called 'Pocket Monsters'."

First thing that came to mind was honestly "so what?"... Pokemon is a franchise like any other, it's obv. going to show up on trivia-based gameshows.

Maybe 10 years ago this may have been interesting, but considering Pokemon is now way bigger than Jeopardy, it's not a big deal. Funny how they said "believe it or not" though, as if anybody would be surprised to hear that there are competitions for card games (wow so crazy!). Then again, the average age of somebody who watches Jeopardy is probably around 70, so I suppose it makes sense.

At least 90% of the reactions I get when I tell people I compete it pokemon tournaments is "Wow they have tournaments for that?!" or "Wow that's STILL a thing?!"

I haven't watched Jeopardy in a while, but it's not really a trivia gameshow like Millionaire. I definitely find this at least "neat".

The person answering got it right. I'm still waiting for the website to update with the question's exact wording and dollar amount.

Yes, any franchise has a chance at ending up in a gameshow question. However, as sdrawkcab pointed out, the reaction to Pokemon is "that's still a thing?" Jeopardy reaches a big audience and anyone watching last night just heard that there are tournaments for the game. It wasn't like "back in 2000, it was the fad that..." This question is a "this is still a thing" and it just got an acknowledgement.

Pokemon has also been mentioned on NPR a few times recently. Tracking these instances gives an indication that more people are talking about Pokemon.

$400: "There are actually world championships for the trading card game & video game featuring these "pocket monsters.""

So not "believe it or not." The wording used was "actually."

The wording is still a bit off-putting. "CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?! THERE ARE ACTUALLY EVENTS..." like it's some earth-shatteringly bizarre concept.

Yes, the "actually" is annoying, but the flip side of it is, how many people/parents thought, "oh, let me look that up and see what's going on!"

Last year during regionals, Michael Feldman gave a nod to the tournament going on in Madison WI. It was awesome to be on my way to league and hear him talking about the big pokemon event down the street.
