Pokemon Training for Dummies?!

There is so much technical stuff when it comes to pokemon training, especially when it comes to raising the right pokemon for your team, you have EVs, IVs, Natures, Characteristics, and then you have things to do in order to raise your pokemon. So I was wondering, if there is anything or anyone out there that can help average joes figure out what one needs to do to raise the pokemon the right way? Any help would be great.

Great, this helps a bit, but questions on a few things.....how to EVs and IVs correlate with each other (affect each other)? Or do they? How about characteristics? Is one preferred over the other? And an example....now if you happen to feed your pokemon with a combo of 252 vitamins/wings on 2 stats, does that guarantee that it will have a max stat? What else should someone worry about? Thanks!!

EV's and IV's don't relate to each other nor do they affect each other. The only thing that makes them similar is that they both affect a Pokemon's stat. Characteristics are based off a Pokemon's IV's. If you feed your Pokemon with that combo, it guarantees that it will have the maximum EV's it can have. (63) However, it doesn't guarantee that it will have a max stat, because you need to have a positive nature AND a perfect IV in that stat in order to guarantee that it will have a max stat. Here are some important things to know:

1. IV's range from 0-31 in each stat, and are "hidden" in the game. This means you can have up to 31 more points in one stat for anyone. A Gengar with a speed IV of 0 would have 31 less speed at Level 100 than a Gengar with speed IV of 31. IV's are set for a Pokemon.

2. EV's range from 0-255 in each stat, and a Pokemon can only have up to 510 EV's. EV's are also hidden in the game. Every 4 EV's in a stat raises that stat by 1. (This is why people normally have a spread of 252/252/4 EV's - Having 255 is useless and you might as well put the last 4 in another stat) EV's, unlike IV's, can be controlled with stat reducing berries (I'm not sure if they were released in the Dream World yet though).

3. Natures are probably more important than IV's. If you want a strong Pokemon, you need to make sure they have a beneficial nature. For example, a Timid (+ Speed, - Attack) Gengar with a mediocre speed IV will be better than a Brave Gengar (- Speed, + Attack) with a decent speed IV. Remember, natures increase the stat by a whole 10%, where as IV's can only increase a stat by 31 at most.

4. Notes for EV Training: Vitamins should always be used first, they increase a Pokemon's EV's by 10 for each vitamin and cap out at 100. Vitamins can only increase a Pokemon's EV's UP to 100, meaning if you have more than 100 EV's and you try to use vitamins, they will not work. Always use it before anything else because they give a free 100 EV's. If you have access to wings, they make things a lot easier since they just add 1 EV for each wing and are not capped out.

Basically, when training a Pokemon, you'll want to make sure it has a good nature and count your EV's right when EV Training. Once you get a hang of the game, you can try to go for better IV's (Such as RNGing, or abusing the Random Number Generator in the game to ensure you get a Pokemon with solid IV's / natures every time). Movesets are also really important in battling.

Hope this helps a bit!

Thanks, it helps a bit, but I'm still a little unsure about the rest of my questions...how about I put out a scenario. Let's say I want to train a good hydrigeon and of course the best stat to aim for is it's sp. Attk. Now I go and catch 2 modest parents and breed them to create a modest deino with some good moves, but now comes the training....am I okay to put the 10 vitamins in it's sp.attack and it's speed(preferred 2nd stat I want to max) and also finish it up by putting in the 152 wings on both stats each to get my desired results? I know I need to still level it up but I need to know if using these things will help get the desired stat.

good to know, but does mean that the stat I place the vitamins and wings on will be at max? How about raising legendaries, who are already leveled up between 40s and 70s level ranges....how can someone get a legendary to go from having decent stats at the level caught to possible max 1-2 stats? I assume the berries come into play, but not exactly sure if there is anything missing here...

You can not get a "maxed out stat" in say for example speed without a 31 IV. The only garuntee to have any stat maxed out is by using 10 vitamins and 152 wings. Or by the normal means of battling wild Pokemon and obtain the effort point in that stat while gaining experiance towards leveling up.
Say you battle a wild Pokemon that gives 2 effort point in speed. You will need to battle two of that same wild pokemon to gain 1 stat increase in speed. After battling the two wild pokemon, and before the Pokemon level's up, you will see the speed stat increase by 1 for every 4 effort points earned from the battle.

The barries are there to reduce the effort points unintentionaly earned from wild battles (trainer battles as well)-
so- it is better to focus on the ev training first before going off and battling wild Pokemon to level up as you will earn effort points randomly and those points are distributed without control.

To max out two stats, make sure that both the main two stats your are wanting to max out are 31 iv and battle only the wild/trainer Pokemon that give your Pokemon the effort points.

Doing the math first will help out as well, and so will things like the Power held items will shorten the time it takes to earn effort points. The Pokerus will also boost the effort points as well.

Say a wild Pokemon gives only 1 effort point earned in speed after battling it. It would take 255 battles to gain the +63 (regardless of the IV ) to get a full increase towards the stat your looking to raise. ( to max out, have the IV be a 31, or it will not max out.)

If you hatch a Pokemon or catch it at level 65 - it has a zero effort value total in all the stats. Go and battle a 500+ wild/trianers and randomly earn effort points towards all the 6 stats.

If you are wanting to catch a stationary Pokemon, save the game first. And be ready to soft reset your game after using an IV calculator to check the Pokemon's IV stats until you catch the Pokemon with the IV's in the stats you are looking to max out.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help, this is all very useful, but it's kinda got more confused at this point, maybe if we can just stick to my example...raising a terrakion and hydriegon....of course one would go for a jolly terrakion and a modest hydrigeon, but what if you have that? Does that mean I have a pkmn that can reach a max stat on it's speed/sp. Attack?

No, in order to have one that can get max speed and Sp. Attack, you need it to have a +nature AND an IV of 31

On the terrakion, it could have max Speed, but ONLY if it has an IV of 31 in Speed. Same with the Hydreigon, but with Sp. Attack. It still needs the IV of 31

I see...I kinda assumed that...from what I can tell I caught a terrakion with a speed iv at 27, but I guess that won't really put it's stat at a max, just close to it.....well if I am reading this IV calculator right...those things look a little confusing....how do characteristics come into play? I don't know if one is better than the other...I just assumed those give an extra boost to the pkmn stat...but I guess there is more to it.

Characteristics are just things that show what IV the pokemon could have. The characteristic represents the pokemon's best IV stat, and there are 5 or 6 different IVs it could be. They don't really affect anything except notifying you of which IV is best

Ok, kinda get it.....is there anyone here that is willing to chat about this on IM? This is pretty helpful but when it gets into details, I start feeling a little overwhelmed....I've been trying to raise a number of pokemon and some I've been able to get a max stat on....others not so much....
