Pooka's Worlds Report

Pooka

Master Trainer
Ohh boy, here we go. Well, I started off thinking I would play Medicham ex/Banette ex, since it would be a surprise deck with quite favorable matchups. However, when I got there, EVERYONE was talking about the deck! (I hate you, Bianchi.) After a while, I realize the deck is sorta inconsistent and its matchups aren't all that great... plus I don't want to run into mirror matches. So I decide to go with the deck I've been working on all summer long: Eggs.

Pokemon 23

4 Exeggcute d
4 Exeggutor d
4 Pikachu d
4 Raichu d
4 Holon's Castform
3 Holon's Magnemite

Trainers 27

4 Holon Transceiver
3 Holon Mentor
3 Cursed Stone
3 Battle Frontier
3 Rocket's Admin.
2 Holon Researcher
2 Pokemon Retriever
2 Swoop! Teleporter
2 Steven's Advice
1 Scott
1 Holon Adventurer
1 Holon Scientist (aka Lanston... YOU DREW IT!)

Energy 10

4 Metal
3 Scramble
3 Double Rainbow

With the inclusion of Battle Frontier, the matchups for the deck seemed to get a lot better. With the ability to pretty much lock your Stadium in (what deck plays SIX?), you should be able to dominate popular decks that are hurt by by both Stadiums (Rock Lock, LBS, Dragtrode, etc.). However, the deck still had the same problems it had before the inclusion of Battle Frontier; it was unable to respond to any opponent's god start. If your opponent just draws everything, your 80 HP and 70 HP attackers can't stand up to buff 120 HP Pokemon. I'll talk more about the deck later, though.

On to Round 1 (I made it this time)!

Round 1 - Dragonite d/Lugia ex

I didn't catch his name, but he was from Japan. When I look at my opening hand, I'm prepared for the worst. It looks something like... Pikachu, Metal, Raichu, Holon's Magnemite, DRE, Cursed Stone, and Battle Frontier. YIKES! He starts with a Pidgey d, so I'm assuming MetaDrag, but I still don't know. Basically he gets set up a bit, while I'm forced to rush him with Raichu. I KO his Holon's Castform with DRE, and draw a DRE off the prize. -_- I keep drawing dead cards, but his setup still isn't anything strong and I have a Battle Frontier locked, so as long as I can draw a Mentor, I can win the game easily. Things turn around when he topdecks a Steven's Advice, draws 2 (I think I had drawn an Exeggcute at this point), and gets Pidgeot + Desert Ruins. How convenient! Basically he gets a Dragonite d going with 2 Metals and I just keep benching the useless Basics I draw. I think he takes 6 prizes in 6 turns with that one Dragonite. Nice way to start off.

0-1

Round 2 - Rock Lock w/ Lunatone/Solrock

Again, I forgot his name, but he was from Japan. He mulliganed and showed me a Dark Flaaffy, so I was pretty happy. With the addition of Battle Frontier, Rock Lock becomes a very favorable matchup. Well, this was a very uneventful game. He started with Lunatone, and I with Exeggcute. I attach to Exeggcute and ROLLOUT! He benches Larvitar, Copycats for 5, Great Balls for Mareep, and passes. I Holon Researacher for Exeggutor, attach DRE, and Split Bomb (the correct strategy vs Rock Lock is to weaken their attackers with Split Bomb right away so you can OHKO them with Eggs when they come up). Although he doesn't want to, he Admins my 2 card hand to 6... and passes again. I just keep Split Bombing him to death, and he can't do anything. A few turns later he just concedes and shows me his HORRIBLE hand.

1-1

Round 3 - Eeveelutions/Mightyena ex (Marcus Raj)

Well, he was from Australia, so that means 3 International players in a row. He mulliganed and showed me a Jolteon ex, so I figured it was impossible to lose the game... and I was right. When I Mentored first turn and grabbed a Pikachu, he immediately threw his hands on his head and went "NOO!!" I got a Raichu up with 2 Metals and 2 more on the bench, and quickly Zzzaped my way to 6 prizes. Cursed Stone and Raichu just ate him alive.

2-1

Round 4 - Rock Lock

Ugh, I really should've written down my opponents' names! Yet again, I face an International player (4 in a row)! He was from Czechoslovakia (I think that's what CL is). Anyway, I play a Battle Frontier right away and Scott for Frontier, Stone, and Admin. T3 I have an Exeggutor Split Bombing and ripping apart his bench. He counters the Frontier, then the Stone, and finally the Frontier gets locked and he's screwed. After I put a LOT of damage on his field and he wastes his Briney, I start taking prizes. Eventually he sends up an Amphy with an Orb, attaches Scramble, then Ram + Shock Bolts to KO me in 2 turns. His hand was pretty small, so instead of just KOing the Amphy, I just decided to demolish his bench with Split Bomb. When he attached a Dark to it, I just KO'd a Pidgey + a Tyranitar with Split Bomb and he couldn't avoid a KO next turn. After the game, he just points to the Battle Frontier and shakes his head. ;)

3-1

*NOTE: At Worlds 05 and Nationals 06, I was 3-1 and proceeded to miss the cut.*

Round 5 - Nidoqueen (Hot Carl)

Yikes! When I saw I was paired with Alex, I was pretty sure I couldn't win. However, I started with an Exeggcute, Exeggutor, and Mentor, so I figured I could try and rush him for a quick win. He started with a Nidoran, so my plan might work! I start with Exeggcute and ROLLOUT! He benches a Nidoran, CCs for 5, benches a Pidgey, and uses LFF for a Nidoran. I Mentor, evolve to Eggs and KO the Nidoran. He sends up Pidgey, and I assume he either topdecked Nidorina/DRE or just didn't realize Pidgey had a Retreat Cost, because he sent up Pidgey, evolved to Nidorina, attached DRE to it, and tried to retreat. :p I Split Bombed his Nidoran/Nidorina, and I thought I was in a great position to win. I had a Battle Frontier in play that was yet to be countered, so that was a plus. However, next turn he attaches to Pidgey, Celios for a Nidoqueen, and Toxics me. I have nothing going on my bench, so I have to hit his Queen and hope to GET LUCKY!

However, he had the Energy to Power Lariat and KO me. Soon after, he got a Pidgeot out and countered the Frontier, then just started setting up a bunch of evolutions. He Brineyed a Queen when it was about to die, and I fell way behind and didn't have anything to answer multiple Nidoqueens. I try to do something and do 90 to his Nidoqueen with Raichu, and he heals it off with Milotic. Normal!

3-2

Round 6 - Mewtric (Seena)

I look at the pairings and... AWWW!! I really didn't want to play Seena, because we're friends and I knew the loser of us would probably be out of the top cut. He starts with Deoxys ex (Speed), and I know I pretty much can't lose now. The entire game I play scared of Pows, but then he tells me he doesn't even play any! I start early by Split Bombing the Deoxys ex and a Manectric ex, while he Flick Poisons things to stall for time. I get out too many things and eventually get the Deoxys ex to 90 damage, KO the Mew, then KO a Manectric. He can't avoid the loss next turn, and just scoops.

4-2

Round 7 - Rock Lock w/ Lunatone/Solrock

Well, I could tell this wasn't going to go well. I started with a Holon's Magnemite and an Admin, otherwise just flat out junk. He goes first with Larvitar, and I figure it's a Rock Lock, so I can still win. He attaches a Fighting and does 10, so it's definitely a Rock Lock (Spin Tail decks don't USUALLY play Fighting). I Admin and hope to draw a Basic, and I draw a Holon's Castform. My hand looks REALLY bad at this point, but at least I drew a Scott. He evolves to Dark Pupitar, attaches a Dark, and Double Tackles. He goes to take a prize, but WAIT! I have a Metal on the Magnemite! This is HUGE! I can Scott for Mentor, Admin, and Frontier (to shut off Sand Damage). Next turn, he gets out the Tyranitar and KOs Magnemite. I Mentor, play the Frontier, and Delta Draw. I get an Exeggutor out and Delta Circle for 40, putting his Tyranitar at 60. Basically the game goes back and forth between us. We trade Tyranitars and Exeggutors for a while, and I'm just amazed at how he keeps pulling Tyranitars out with DREs to respond to my Exeggutors.

Finally, I think I have the game sealed. I Admin him to 2 and KO his Tyranitar with a fresh Exeggutor, leaving him with nothing but a Larvitar with a Dark, Lunatone, and Solrock on his bench. He looks at his hand, thinks, and sends up the Larvitar. I'm thinking, "What can he have off TWO cards?" Well, I was about to find out! He draws, Steven's Advice for 6 (donksac!), and here it comes... Rare Candy, Tyranitar (his FOURTH Sand Damage Tyranitar of the game), and DRE. HHHWHAT? He KOs my active Exeggutor, so I send up my other one, Mentor, and do 70 to it. He does 50, putting my Exeggutor at 60 (he had countered my Frontier finally, so Sand Damage). He has a Mareep benched with a Dark on it, and I'm EXTREMELY paranoid of a Dark Flaaffy KO, so I retreat to Raichu, attach Scramble, and do 50 for the KO. He sends up Lunatone, attaches Dark, and Moon Guidances for the Rare Candy. I can obviously see the Dark Amphy coming, but I HOPE he doesn't have the ATM Rock (he can KO the benched Eggs and take his last prize if he has it). I draw praying for the Admin (and I WIN the game with an Admin, folks), whiff, attach DRE to Raichu, and discard the Scramble to KO his Lunatone. We both have one prize a piece, and it'll come down to this turn. If he has it, I lose. If he doesn't, I win. He promotes Mareep... Rare Candy, Dark Ampharos, and ATM Rock.

4-3

That was a pretty tough beat to take for me. Basically getting knocked out of the tournament like that was not the way I wanted to go out this year. I was basically depressed going into the next round, since my resistance wasn't very good. Oh well, might as well play it out.

Round 8 - Medicham ex/Banette ex/Houndoom (Moss)

Well, he had about a 0.000001% chance of making the cut while I had a somewhat legitimate chance of making it, BUT he decided to play me anyway. (Dork, why even ask me what my breakers are if it isn't going to influence your decision?!) I started off with a semi-weak hand, but I started Split Bombing his bench early, making sure not to take a prize. Around turn 3 he sends up Banette ex to KO my Exeggutor, but he commits all his energy in play to that ONE Banette! If I hit the Scramble off my Steven's for 4, I probably win the game (Scramble/Raichu for the KO). WHAT A GAMBLING ADDICT! However, I whiff. "Normal." . I attach a Holon's Magnemite and retreat since he can't KO my other Raichu even with Shady Move. That way I can draw a Scramble and KO him, or a DRE + Cursed Stone would do it. Next turn I actually draw the Scramble, and KO him after sacrificing a Holon's Castform somewhere. I Zzzap to give me more outs with my second Raichu, but I have to bench an Exeggcute or I'll lose. He Shady Moves and puts a damage counter on my Raichu to KO it, then I send up Exeggcute and he KOs that. I Adventurer for 4 and hope to hit Scramble/DRE and put myself in a great position... whiff! (The details are a little hazy on this game, I'm pretty sure they aren't all right, but it's close.) After the game I find out a Scramble and DRE are prized. Bad beat!

4-4

Aaaand I'm eliminated! I don't even bother to look at the standings as it's painfully obvious I didn't make the cut. It was a disappointing tournament for me, but I honestly didn't get much to go my way. Although my deck choice wasn't exactly perfect, I didn't exactly catch any breaks. You need luck to win, and it just wasn't on my side. Normal!

Regardless, it was a fun time. The best part about Worlds is seeing everyone again. I enjoyed the entire weekend. Until next year...

Props:

-Joner going 8-0!
-Jason winning (I GUESS).
-Jimmy making the Finals! I knew you'd do well this year.
-Hanging out with everyone the whole weekend... Crim, Chad, Bianchi, Martin, Eric, Matt, Noel, Lanston, Sebastian, Seena (-_-), Mikey, Kettler, Freddy K, Pramawat, TRUK, and everyone else I missed.
-Chuck for winning Worlds for the 8th time (and maintaining your x-0 record vs me DONKEY)!
-Lanston Loh for being himself. Oh my GOD!
-Jeremy for back-to-back T4s. Not bad!
-Disneyland with Martin and the Celios!

Slops:

-Crim's streak of bad luck continuing. :\
-Joner for losing in T32. I was rooting for you, bud. :(
-Losing my binder. Real mature, guys.
-Martin stealing my sunglasses... then losing them.
-Lanston Loh for being himself. GOD what a donksac!
-Team Eggs whiffing the cut completely! We all had rough luck.
-All the players being so secretive about decks. Honestly, the cutthroat environment is lame for Pokemon.
-Mewtric winning Worlds! I don't think it was close to the best deck in the format.
-ESPANA!
-Kewley. Ugh.

Oh, and there were a few minor changes I would make to the deck. First off, Energy Root is HUGE! It changes so many matchups it's stupid. Also a 4th Scramble was definitely needed. Those changes probably would've changed a lot of things for me. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20!

Espeonchris14: Haha, oops. ;x

Rep13: Nice seeing you again, Dunford.

Thomas33: GOD, then what does CL stand for?!

Magnechu: EspyCham was the deck! Nice seeing you again.

BigChuck01: I'm so BAD at Pokemon! SO BAD!

Vappy: =(

GrandmaJoner: Nah, I didn't really have a chance. I knew the R7 loss sealed my fate. Oh well, I'll try to see you next year. It was cool hanging out with you.

Moss Factor: OUI! Yeah, I didn't even BOTHER to check my tiebreaks after R7. I knew I was done! I just love to complain.

Dark Sneasel: I edited my slops just for you buddy.

Smeagol: Yeah, I know. Like he said, SOUR GRAPES! I didn't have a chance after losing R7.

Nice Try. Eggs was only good at Nats because it
suprised everyone. It didn't suprise anyone at worlds.
Anyway Good Luck and I hope that you do better in
the future.

Bummer, Pooka... the world owes you a win lol! Good to see you made it into the actual tourney though. At least you got to play your first round this time around ^_^
