At the prereleases I attend in Brookfield the TO offers a WHOLE BOX in addition to standard prizes. For the money it's a great deal.

$20 for 10 booster totally aint a bad deal

You're right, it's not. It's actually a great deal, but there are a lot of people around here that don't want to give up an extra 5 bucks.

I wonder why PUI would want to up the minimum price. It doesn't affect me, I've always paid 20, but it just seems odd. Someone with some business sense please explain why they would do this. PUI gets no money from prereleases, right?

They're trying to keep all the Prereleases consistent with other Prereleases in the area. If an event offers a lower price, some would attend that Prerelease over another Prerelease. If one is offering to add prizes for the top players in the event, players will attend that Prerelease over another.

We have done $18 since the change in prize structure and thrown in two boosters into the top eight prize pool per entry in each age group. Another Prerelease was already charging $20 before the prize structure changed, still does charge the same amount, and no extra prizes. We were going to remain at fifteen but we decided to improve the prizes for the top ranked players at the end of the event. So yes, even a difference in price can cause some competition.

My GUESS might be, that as the events keep getting larger attendance-wise, it's getting harder for the PTOs to find venues to hold these events comfortably at a reasonable price. Raising the price the PTOs can charge could make it easier for them to run their events in larger venues which may cost more, like hotel ballrooms, etc; I know our local prereleases are getting to the point where we've almost outgrown the store gaming areas we've been using...

The main reason I see the one that phil pointed out above, different areas charge different amounts and players will likeley go to another place because they are charging less, even though it is the same tournament. I really think that the prizes need to be uped as well if we are going to go with a standard $20. I'm not saying the fact that everyone gets at least 10 packs isnt good, I just think that we need to make these tournaments at least slightly competetive, maybe adding an extra few packs for anyone who goes undefeated or has only one loss. At least something to up the prizes.

Different places charge different amounts. They are trying to standardize it by making everyone have to charge the same amount of $20.

Yup. Its a really nice added bonus (though I haven't seemed to get a full box, yet). I usually get most of my winnings from the $5 side events.
