Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

President of Pokemon USA, Inc. to Step Down

Remember these...

Jungle Clefable
Fossil Aerodactyl
Team Rocket Dark Gyarados
Gym Heroes Misty's Seadra

'Mom, I think it was from Jungle to Rocket or something. Can anyone correct me on this? I'm 100 % sure they did for Fossil though, as I remember the Prerlease Aerodactyl! And there was a Clefable for Jungle, right?

what i listed in my last post above were the Prerelease stamped cards back in Wizards days.

Misty's Seadra never had a prerelease. It was a promo given to League members who completed some kind of challenge.

the 'prerelease' stamped cards were league promos, before the set was released. there were NEVER prerelease tournaments like we have now, under WotC, AFAIK.

No, there were a couple.
Jungle was just a limited promo at the test Leagues.
If not for Fossil, then for TR and the first of the Gyms.
Then, for Gym Challenge it was just a promo given out at TRU and League.

Nothing at all to compare with what we have had with PUI.

Perhaps not in San Diego but I remember prereleases being held at WoTC in Northgate Mall (Seattle, WA) for at least Team Rocket and Gym Challenge.

I'll confirm with our League's store owner, as he used to run the WoTCs in the area. Maybe he remembers better than I do.

P

then they were probably held only up in seattle...which would make sense as WotC is up there too. i've never heard of WotC prereleases anywhere here in so. cal, and i've been involved in league since it began. i know pres were a big request when WotC had the game, there were threads asking for them on the WizPoG.

They held a couple in the Northeast too.

I seem to recall if was for two sets. Three at the most.

So, PUI are a branch of PUSA. right?

Apart from the budget, I wonder how much input PUSA has on how POP is run? Or do they let PUI have a lot of autonomy with the occasional intervention?

I heard about this earlier today.
There was basically no TCG in 2003 :(
To get pokémon back on it's feet is a huge accomplishment.
Look some places are even to sell fake pokémon TCG cards again.

We had a prerelease for Gym Heroes down here in Chattanooga. Although I don't remember if it was an actual prerelease or just held when the new cards came in.

As far as the game, yes, it was dead when PUSA got ahold of it. For anyone who remembers the Ruby and Sapphire challenge, they're first tournament attempt, numbers were down across the board. Even lower attendance than the (more numerous) Battle Zones (WOTC last tourneys). I can easily see the game fading away then, if not for the dedication of many people (a lot of them on this board).

SD Pokemom, there must not have been Wizards retail store near you, but I assure you that Wizards Prerelease did infact exist. I missed the Jungle one but I participated in the next two held, Fossil and Team Rocket. There was no Prerelease for Base set 2.

And Bulldos you may be right that there was no Prerelease for Gym Heroes. I believe that there was supposed to be a prerelease held for Gym Heroes, and that is why the Misty's Sedra Prerelease stamped card was produced. But sometime prior to the set being released. Hasbro put the cabash on Prereleases and the Tournament was canceled. As they already had the cards printed up, instead of throwing them away it was decided to give them away at Pokemon League. All I know for certain is that I missed the Jungle Prerelease Tournament as I had the acquire that card via trade at League (after weeks of coaxing the player who had it) And the fact that I participated in the next two prerelease tournaments held.

Pokepop, I did not realize that Hasbro had some license for Pokemon prior to the Wizards purchase. My information was based my recollection of our local newspapers account of the sale at the time. But the report being factually wrong would not surprise me at all as this paper is famous for its shoddy reporting and inaccurate stories. (Our city has one shopping mall with only three department stores in it, once a report in the paper about a planned mall renovation project, attempted to mention the 3 department stores in the mall. Unfortuantly the reporter only got two correct, the third store mentioned was located over a mile down the street from the mall). So thank you for letting me know about the error.

I just wanted to get nostalgic with some people on here. Its clear when the game was weak, but my favorite time was when they had the mall tour qualifiers and the super trainer showdown (that was the peak of my performance). The people running events were called Master Trainers, and it's been funny to bump into them at big gaming events since. Also, anyone remember the Tropical Mega Battle? And the biggest old timey Pokemon TCG thing ever: remember when there were no booster packs? Only starter decks existed up until 1999. November 98 Starter decks were released.

But yeah, for the most part choices are made in Japan from everything I can tell, but it will be cool if this guy puts pressure to benefit those of us in the West on Japan.

We had a prerelease for Gym Heroes down here.

By clicking your 'map' link, I can tell that 'down here' = Chattanooga, TN or thereabouts?

Anyway, there was a pre for one of the Gym Sets (Challenge?) at Krazy Kat here in Manhattan Beach, CA. You got a couple packs of the unreleased set, I think, to put in your deck, IIRC.

i wouldnt mind being the new presidents intern.

This could be a great step forward with the Pokemon TCG

Neither good nor bad.
The good thing, from the TCG point of view, is that the new president is coming from the Seattle office, which runs the TCG. So he should be very familiar with the card game.

Hopefully there will be better communication and coordination between the video game promotion and the trading card promotion. Ideally Regionals should not be on the same day as the Journey Across America...
