PS3 vs. Xbox 360

Hello, everyone. I'm back with more questions!

I'm thinking about getting either a Xbox 360 or a PS3, but I know almost nothing about either system. So give me some general pointers, please. Things like, if there are multiple versions of each, list the pros and cons of each. For instance, doing just a quick search on GameStop's site, I've noticed there is a 160GB HDD and a 320GB HDD PS3. Am I really going to need that much bigger of a HDD? Etc. I need pretty much a complete over view of each system.

I like RPGs more than FPS, personally, but my brother enjoys both pretty much equally. What's happening as far as console exclusive titles go? What are going to be the must have titles to get (please be sure to mention if it's console exclusive), current and upcoming releases? Series I'm REALLY interested in include Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy, if that's of any help.

I haven't been too involved in the video game world for the past few years, so I really don't know what to expect of a system or even what I should ask... Help me out, guys.

Other things worth noting: I already have a Wii, so don't bother suggesting that. Also, I have crappy internet, so online gaming isn't happening for now. Backwards compatibility is a non-issue for both systems, as I have a PS2 and an original Xbox.

Thanks in advance!

OMG teh ps3 is for n00bz becuz xbox 360 all day lolololol

Nah but seriously, for me it comes down to games. Personally I like the 360 because they have games I like (but I wish I had a PS3 as well) but everyones opinion is different. Id say go check out your local Gamestop or whatever and look at the games and see what interests you the most. I know some people who prefer Wii over Xbox and PS3 because they enjoy the games.

PS3 and XBox360 has their own exclusive first party and 3rd party games. For some that dictates which system to buy.
Although exclusive 3rd party games are exclusive for 8-12 months on a particular system.

XBox360 has a better motion control system than ps3.
Ps3 can play 3d movies in addition to blue ray movies.

Just going by the hardware, the PS3 is the nicer system.

Yeah, I saw a hardware comparison of them on IGN I think, but what does that really mean? Like I said, am I realistically going to use the whole 320GB HDD, or will the 160GB HDD get me along fine? My TV is a piece of crap, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a VHS and a Bluray. Etc.

The free online play for the PS3 is nice, though. When I do eventually get good internet, I'm not going to want to pay for a subscription to play online. And who knows? Maybe I'll get a nice TV sooner than I expect. I think overall, I'm leaning towards to PS3.

I'm more concerned about just gaming for now, so games are probably going to be the selling point for me. What are going to be the must have titles to get (please be sure to mention if they're console exclusive), current and upcoming releases?

I'd say go with the PS3. There is an update for 3D Blue Ray playback plus a blue ray player is always nice to have. I got a 40 GB PS3 for 200 bucks as a referb from Micro Center and replaced the 40 GB HDD with a 500 GB HDD. Both the Wii and 360 don't have options for your choice of hard drives.

The 360 plays better online but I'd say go for the PS3. Also, what do your friends have.

^I'm pretty sure you'll find that the Xbox has many options for hard drives that come with the console.

Play what your friends have. If you want to play on line somewhere down the road, and you really don't care about the consoles, see what your friends have and play that. The PS3 has better hardware... but I can't notice a difference. Go to a bestbuy or somewhere and see if you can. The exclusive games are not as noticeable as the 3rd party games which both consoles have. CoD and FFXIII (*shudders for even mentioning the game*) are on both consoles (in your genres). I cannot name a single GREAT traditional RPG for either console. Dragon Age is the closest thing to a great RPG on either. I'd say, if you like great RPGs, get a NES.

Xbox has (Arguably) better online. Less lag (barely), and the community is only a wee bit less stuck ups. The monthly fee might scare you off, but it means that you'll get stuff earlier. DLC comes about a month before PS3. PS3 also has great online, though. Just be prepared to drool at the stuff your Xbox-owning counterparts have for about a month D:

As far as exclusives go... PS3 trumps Xbox no doubt. They aren't exactly in your genres though. The only worthwhile exclusives that I can point out on the PS3 are Little Big Planet (1 and 2) and Demon Souls. LBP is a platformer and Demon Souls is an insanely hard (and fun) beat-em-up game. Also... PS3 has God of War if you aren't tired of that formula yet. Xbox has... Halo. They both have some exclusive FPS, but most of them are not as good as CoD (no arguing >:{).

This is totally preference. Xbox controllers feel better to me... so I can play with them for longer. I already have a wii, so the concept of the PSMove does not appeal to me. For me, Kinect is new and different. Even so, I can respect what PS3 owners have and would drool whenever my friends are playing Demon Souls (I WANT IT). Once again, I'd recommend you look over ign or gamespot for their top scoring games in each console and check videos of those games out. Go to a bestbuy to feel the controllers and watch the games play. After that, make your decision on which one you like more. Hope this helped a bit ;D

Well, they both kind of suck. Just upgrade your PC and play on that. Games are cheaper, graphics better, more options.

Best advice I can give to you.

Also, use steam/.

I kind of like the 360's controller better than the PS3's, but that's just my own preference. I agree with z-man, get what your buds play

Well since you mentioned you like Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy you should definitley get the PS3 bc you can download FF7 and FF8 on it and the new Kingdom Hearts 3 will be exclusive to it. But I have a few games that are RPG's on the 360 that may interest you if they are on the PS3, Lost Odyssey, Last Remnant, and Dragon Age, amazing games so check them out.

If you are really into online play you should buy a X-box 360. You pay a little for it but it's much more smoother when you play and the servers are crowded. But a PS3 is a better choice if you don't want to play online.

Well, like I said guys, I have really sucky internet. I'm not going to be able to play online with either system for now. I really don't see what getting the same system that my friends has to do with it besides being able to play online with them, but I've already covered that like 3 times. I'm not that much of an online gamer, and I'm definitely not going to pay for an online subscription for the rare occasion I might want to get some DLC or play with some friends. The systems already cost enough money, a monthly subscription fee is retarded beyond all belief, in my opinion.

Controllers are kind of the least important thing I would consider, but I'm comfortable with both. *shrug*

I don't know, the Kingdom Hearts PS3 exclusivity is gonna be hard to cope with if I get an Xbox 360. I already have 3 titles in the series, and I want to finish the story really bad. lol

So, like I asked before, am I really going to need that big of a HDD? What all can you store on it? Would I be better off just getting the smallest HDD model and upgrading the HDD if need to?

Also, is there a particular model I should go after? There are only two models in production right now, the 160GB and 320GB slim models. Do any of the older models have features I might want that two current models don't have?

Is there another Kingdom Hearts game on the way in the near future? For all we know they could be waiting on next-gen consoles, lol.

I'm a 360 guy because I adore the 360 exclusives and the online interface. 360 has Fable,Gears, and Halo. The online interface is cool because of the voice chat and the massive amount of games offered over the XBL arcade.Achievements are cool too.

I rarely play the ps3 because I find the game selection rather dull, the L and R triggers to be deplorable(They even made trigger attachments that you can buy separately to improve them *facepalm*) and an online system that is absolute garbage compared to the 360's. I've played Little Big Planet and Sly Cooper Collection recently and enjoyed them, and in the past Fat Princess (a PSN game) was fun too.

Do you think you're going to go back and play old titles or try to find newer ones? That will help a lot in your decision, I think.

Either way it sounds like to me you would like the PS3 better if you really want to play Kingdom Hearts and don't know anyone near you with a PS3. the PS3 also has a bigger library in the rpg section I think. One title that comes to mind is Heavy Rain. If you do decide to get a PS3, get the 160gb. I doubt you will manage to fill that in a year's time with dlc/games/saves/pictures/movies/etc.

The newer models have the newer motherboards in them and thats about it and fixed the overheating problem they did not have. They really took out a lot of the extra space the frame has. You're really paying for the HDD space. I got my 500 GB for 40 bucks when they charge 100+ for the 160-320 models, both mine and the newer models PS3 having off-brand 5400 RPM drives.

As for space, you might need it because all the newer PS3 games like to install the game to help with faster load times and the ability to add custom content makes you want a huge drive, I have about 320 GB free on my PS3.

The 360 is okay but, still crashes at random times and the Red Ring issue is still an issue eventhough they said they fixed it. The PS3 still has its problems but those are fixed with firmware updates.

In the long run, the PS3 will be better because, and this is they selling point, you have to pay to be able to play online with the 360 and you don't with the PS3. I say get what your friend have.

Well, I was kinda worried about that, but I found this with a quick Google search. But, then on the other hand, there are plenty of rumors about the "PlayStation 4" and that it's likely to be announced in 2012. Then there's this and this. It's definitely not coming soon. The real question is, will it be coming sooner than the next generation of consoles?

It's too soon to say, really. If the PS3 lasts another couple years I'd say it's likely to be released on the PS3. At worst, I'd come out with a 3D Bluray player, right?

Probably both. Just whatever catches my eye, ya know?

Alright, cool Thanks for the advice.

The newer 360's can't even red ring- literally. They took out that feature on the slims. The PS3's online being free doesn't matter, really if the experience is terrible. Whenever you download those console/online updates they take forever(5-10 minutes if you haven't played in a while) eve on a fast connection. Every update on the 360 takes like 5-10 seconds in comparison. Not to mention that the 360's voice chat sounds so much better and clearer than the 360's AND has cross game chat. PS3's online is so lacking they actually offer a premium online service for a charge.

Also the subscription prices are very reasonable. I haven't paid more than $30 for a year subscription in about 2 or 3 years. The deals and promotions are going on all the time ,too. When you turn on your 360 you are often offered $1 to upgrade to Gold membership for a month. You get free 48 hour trials in most online games too.

Essentially the 360 has such a better online interface to the extent that the price of it is a moot point.

It depends on what you want in a system. Personally I think the PS3 is the best one (I've been looking into them myself, I don't have either of them). It has better graphics, free online, and a more diverse genre of games. The 360's XBox Live is $60 if you buy an entire year, or $25 for three months. Additionally, many of the 360's defining games are FPS, most of which are shared with the PS3 and if not the PS3, then the computer (But you'll need a good graphics card to play the computer ones).

And the price of live is not a moot point. because there are many other factors. Obviously the deals require a credit card or some such, so if you don't have one, it's either a $60 Sub Card from GS or ask your parents. Another thing to note is how often you play online. If you want to go online occasionally, then it's not worth paying the extra to get online. If it's something you want to do often, then it's something to consider. (I can't say anything on how good either of their onlines are, so I won't go into that)

Lastly, you're a Kingdom Hearts fan, so am I. BUT, we still have at least Dream Drop Distance and Birth By Sleep Volume 2 before III comes out. So by the time that happens, we might be at a PS4. Lol. PS2 did last ten years, but hey. So just a warning not to use Kingdom Hearts as a reason.

Not true. toys r us and walmart frequently have them on sale in physical as well as in their online stores. Amazon too.

Walmart.com is acually about to have a sale on 12 month XBL cards today for $30. That's only $5 a month for online play that is incredibly better than anything involving the playstation 3.

Since your not going to have online, ps3 seems like the better choice. Demon Souls, KH3 (if it does come out), Killzone looks pretty good. For 360 wise, Lost Odyssey was an amazing rpg, though the 4 discs was somewhat annoying. Theres also loads of localized RPGs on the 360 from Japan, like Tales of Vesparia of something like that. For your case, not having online makes most of the shooters not worth getting. I would check out the RPG comparison on both consoles, and choose whihc type of games appeal to you most. 360 has dragon age and mass effect, but imo dragon age was pretty bland and mass effect 2 was too dumbed down and streamlined compared to its predecessor.
