1. I am trying to build my first deck and was wondering what sets are legal in the main format?

2. I put standard legal in the pokemon card database and seem to get cards not in the sets I think is allowed, for example gyradose from heart gold and sould silver show up despite putting standard format am I missing something was it reprinted?

3. does mono ever work or is duel the best way to go to cover weakness?

4. can you evolve more then once per turn?

5. can you play venasaur ex from xy without evolving him from ivysaur it says he is a basic pokemon?

current legal sets are next destinies and newer, full list under the researching tower link at the top of the page

you mean pokemon types? most competitive decks are mono or dual type decks, though the second type is usually just techs to counter/cover weaknesses

pokemon can evolve normally if they have been in play since the start of the turn, the one you just evolved has not been in play since the start of turn, it came into play when you evolved it.

venasuar ex is a basic and doesn't evolve from regular ivysaur, it would say it does in the spot that says it does in the spot it says its a basic instead.

thanks for the help, I am trying to build a deck using the pokemon database, and I use the advanced search for standard format but I keep getting stuff from out of date sets like gyradose from heart gold so it's confusing me on whats legal and whats not. the pokemon site is also horrid on listing whats legal and whats not

soviet, which database are you looking at, which site? If you mean the official pokemon site, then yeah, with the recent redo of the site, things are still a bit wonky. But right now it is Dark Explorers and newer. Pretty soon, Pokemon will announce if there will be a rotation, and then those sets will become the new modified/standard

the pokemon site is what I am talking about.

Also I was under the impression that is was next destines and up based on what I seen on the site, also when is the next rotation

It is definitely Next Destinies on; nobody knows when the next rotation will be, but typically (though not always) it's soon after the World Championships (which are in August this year).

Next Destinies and newer

The only old cards that are legal in modified, must have a current reprint.

It really depends on the deck. Darkrai decks are very successful, and they only use one type.

4. can you evolve more then once per turn?

You may evolve each of your pokemon in play once per turn, but you may not evolve on your first turn.

5. can you play venasaur ex from xy without evolving him from ivysaur it says he is a basic pokemon?

Absolutely, it is a basic pokemon.
