Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

R&S attendance

Yeah no kidding this wasn't the smartest move by Nintendo IMO, they should have done a whole lot more advertising. There are A LOT that play the Gameboy for sure, i mean my local Wal-Mart sells them like crazy around here. The way they organized this just is not going to work and they should have had a side event for TCG only.
Well, they had a theory and they wanted to test it. I dunno whether they can extract any information from the test with all the other variables thrown in. But hey, it's their baby. Anyway - most everyone I know IS offering side events and PUI has encouraged that all along. Would have been nice for some prize support for that though...

Everyone is eager to get the TCG rolling though, we all want our Format, information, advertising, and we are sure having to wait IMO an ureasonable amount of time. October is too late to announce the format and tournament schedule, they need to start something now. Some kind of tournament structure. They have had all this time.
You ever see baby birds when momma lands on the nest? What a racket as each clamors for attention NOW. Think about this: the structure that they set up for OP will be with us for some time. Decisions need to be made and they need to be considered and balanced to make the best fit for the players - present and future. A lot of money and time will be expended and the result had better be something that will stand on it's own and create new revenue for the brand or the OP program will be doomed. So give the hard-working folks at PUI a little credit and some patience. I personally don't want to see an OP program setup by someone who perceives it as a thankless job. And all of the griping will make the job exactly that.

I will post results out here next week if the event does take place this Sunday.

Thanks Feraligatr and FlipsAreCool for the heads up on the tournament in your area. I hope it goes down so you guys can play. Just post when it does happen. :thumb:

Hey people geez i was just expressing my opinion you have some good points sure, but honestly why can't pokemon be like magic and have EVERTHING announced, planned ahead, prize structure is better, etc. I understand we have a much smaller player base, but wouldn't that make it easier???? Honestly when i hear of a words like structure and a 15+ included i will be happy. Nintendo hasn't proved anything IMO yet.

I think the POINT those of us who replied were trying to make is that these events don't just appear out of thin air: they take planning, discussion, time to get venues/organizers lined up, time to publicize the events, etc etc etc...and it's been what, less than 6 months since the transition beween companies was announced?

Unless you've been on the working end of these events, you have no idea of all that goes on behind the scenes to make the event run smoothly for those who attend...and it's easy to criticize and expect things to be done NOW. Sorry, it just doesn't work that way...

JMHO,

Seeing as how Magic The Gathering has been running ten years without a switch in companies... it's hard to compare our game that is still in the transition periods. Nintendo/Pokemon USA is still listening and acting on what we, the consumers, are telling them to do. They are still using older players and organizers as guinea pigs to develop a solid organized play program and even a franchise. As PokeMom said, these events take alot of time to organize and with the busy convention schedule that the OP team had, this event was pushed till the very last minute. I dont think any person wanted these events to be announced at a very close date, it's just the way things came to be. Be lucky that they did not cancel the entire event with the time constraints. More OP is better than No OP.

And the prize structure? You are complaining about the prize structure? Have you even seen the amount of product given out? All three age groups have seperate prizes. Each 1st Place snags a box of R/S, $200 gift certificate to the Pokemon Center, and a 1st Place Medal. Other top eight get boosters, Ruby/Sapphire Games, and top three snag a medal. Everyone gets two promotional cards only released at ComicCon and GenCon including a EON Ticket and some smaller freebies. Complaining about prize structure... I havent seen one local level Sealed Magic Tournament that rivals that prize structure.

And BTW... 15+ have always been allowed to play the game. While WotC restricted some prize support, Nintendo/Pokemon USA have given full prize support to the 15+. Guess what? You dont have to be a Professor to enter into any small events in the past. Now Nintendo/Pokemon USA is even taken off the Professor restriction for large events. So no complaining about 15+ anymore folks.

I am going to have to with GymLeaderPhil on this one Scizor. This is some of the best prize support that I have seen for this game in a long time. Not only for the reason of how much is being really given out to the players, but that it is for each age group. In both of the SBZ each age group got a trophy, but all three age groups were put against eachother for the booster boxes and other prizes. I saw 11 year olds trying to pay again a much older guys in the top 8 of the SBZ hoping to win some booster. Even though they were age modified that didnt matter when it came down to the top 8. Now age groups can play in their own age and win some really really nice stuff with out having to worry about playing someone 20 or 30 years older then they are. I just feel bad that Nintendo has put so much money into this tournament with prizes and such, and because of how quickly that tournaments were put together, and not more people are able to take advantage of it. I just hope this has not left a bad teast in Nintendo's mouth, and they will continue to give out such great prize support as they are with the R&S Challenge in the future. :p

Heck, Wizards took the restrictions off of age groups at their FAT

I do hope there are some professor only events that we can participate in, as I get 9th in the prof event, and 135th in the FAT

I will be very interested to see the attendence in Chicago and other areas, as these places have had time to hype their tourneys.

The turnout for the 16th tourneys - disgraceful.....I will keep my premier TO comments to myself.

I would have liked to go, in that the average player walked out with over $100 worth of stuff!

Look forward to seeing you all at upcoming events...as WE STILL PLAY POKEMON....had to bribe a kid to get my R/S team together...he did a great job though!

Kudos to Shining Pidgeot for making top 8 in my $200 tourney and for making my R/S team! Not bad for a 9 year old (or is he 10 now?hmmm)

Orlando, Florida 38 (10-Under seven, 11-14 twenty two, 15+ nine)

Plus nine playing in a Expedition-On Modified Tournament during the main tournament, if you want to count that. Then it would be 47 in attendance.

Milford Ma - 39 (10 & under: 4, 11 - 14: 19, and 15+: 16).

After the event:

8 person free draft (15+ winner Nick C. used his booster, don't know where other packs came from )

7 person regular draft (paid $15 to enter, got to keep their cards, and 1st got 6 packs R&S, 2nd got 5 packs R&S, & 3rd got 4 packs R&S).

From what I can tell we are still missing reports from Toronto, ON, Plainfiel, IN, Rockville, MD, and all we know for Brooklyn, NY is they had 30ish players. I have been putting all the other scores in a excel sheet so we can keep track of them all. Anyone know what the show was for these 4?

Well here's Toronto. We had 19 total. 4 in 10-, 7 in 11-14, and 8 in 15+. Not the best turnout I've seen, but I'm sure it's understandable. There was only 3 from our gym that went to play. Considering I did so poorly but ended up in 5th, I still came out with 10 packs, not too shabby. Personally I was pretty happy the way it turned out, except for one "incident". One participant who put his GBA SP down on a table got it stolen. He bought the system and game for the tournament and was just starting back into pokemon tcg. He ended up only being able to complete the card portion - obviously in 8th place. What a let down, system and game gone. Hardly a reason to come back to pokemon for him. We tried our best to find it, even checking backpacks and searching the room to no avail. I felt sorry for him, but there wasn't much we could do. Hope the thief can sleep well at night.

Congrats GLB for having such a decent turnout. Wish I could've come. We were hoping to get one in Colorado, but communication with Nintendo fell apart between our TO and them (they didn't return phone calls). Had we been able to hold a challenge, we might have rivaled your SLC attendance. Anyway, I'm glad to see Pokemon is still doing well in Utah.

 that is a good one Steve ;) Im sure your guys would of had a great tournament, you always seem to be able to bring a lot a players to tournament both here and there.

We try to do our best. To get ready for the tournament, we ran three little tournaments in hobbie shops in the area to promote it a couple of weeks before the tournament. Also had a ton of flyers dropped off and not only hobbie shops, but also Toys R US, Targets, Softwear etc, and other stores like that.

It was a lot of fun, and I am sorry that you were not able to make it. Hope to see you again at the next tournament you are able to come down for. :thumb:

Ok, I have keep track of all the R&S Challenge reported numbers that I have see so far. I am still missing the the numbers for 4 of the tournaments, so if you know the break up of the ages it would be great if I could get then from you. Im missing numbers from:

St.Albert Canada
Plainfild, IN
Rockville, MD
Brooklyn, NY all I have is 30ish

So far the average attendance for the 13 R&S Challenge that I have seen looked like this:

10 and Under: 3.9
11 - 14: 9.7
15 and up: 9.1
Total avg: 22.7

If we make it to the Rockville, MD Prereleased this weekend, I will ask the owner how many were in attendance at the R&S tournament. We use to judge the WotC Pokemon events for them so she may share that information with us. :D
