If they're gonna make Nationals the premier event (I've even said this several times) it needs to be a huge event with huge prizes. I am FINE with making Nationals THE event as long as it steps it up. According to their "press release" it isn't. How could we NOT be upset? Some of you people are INSANE! This is SO unbelievably bad for the game.
Scizor got it.

Nats is the same as it has been. Same scholarship money. Same prizes. They don't say a word about it being changed, about it being way better, etc. So all we know is that it will be the same as last year. If it is going to be THE tournament this year, then it should be worth a LOT to people and make it the best of the year.

So if Nats doesn't improve from the previous year, then players will be mad. =/

Lol It's Pretty Obvious to Me that the Over 30 Yr Olds are sticking
together and supporting PUI's decision while the 21 Yr Olds and
Younger don't agree. I think we got a War Going On.

I never really got why worlds should be a purely international tournament, with equal representation for each country. I mean, it really should be proportional to the amount each country spends on pokemon as a whole, whichever country has more players really should proportionally get more trips. After all, it's those places where the profit is going to be made.

And I'm really sorry to say this. But the US DOES have better players, it isn't only the top 4, it isn't even the guys who made it into worlds last year. I just can't see the French, Australian, British (well, maybe the british), German, any of those champions taking on Martin or Ness and actually winning more games than they could.

As I remember it...I do believe that the winners from EACH age division were from different parts of the world...ONLY 1 US winner...1 from Europe...1 from Japan.

I understand that all you ELITE players dismiss the 10- and 11-14 players as subpar... I think if you actually PLAYED these kids who are tops in their age groups, you would be hard pressed to beat many of them..they are truly that good.

...And DragonaireMaster8..if you are going to retire soon, please go ahead and do it or let it go.

How many more times does the U.S. have to prove it has the best players? Win 2 more Worlds? 20?

Look this is screwing EVERYONE. And who's to say we can't get stuff changed RIGHT NOW? Everyone whined like a baby about no grinder and that came back pretty quickly! PUI needs to take a step back and look at what happened to the 15+ under WOTC. You DON'T MESS WITH US!

This game is so much about luck, and other stuff you can´t trust on as a player. So having 70 players out of 110 players from US. does only mean, that mathematicly there is a lot more chances for US players. SO if we had worlds every year in japan for example, and there would have been 70% Japan and European players, there wouldn´t have ever been a World champion from US. So that´s all about you being better!!

*Flaming_Spinach from his brothers account to get past the double post thingie*

Let's calculate how the Worlds invites are going to be given out this year. We have 64 to work with.

4 People from last years Worlds are coming back this year.
8 People from Ratings in N.A,
4 People from ratings in Euro/Africa
2 People from ratings in Asia/Pacific
1 Person from Ratings in S.A.
19 so far

Now we get a little hypothetical

I expect 4 from US Nationals, And 2 minimum from Canada and Mexico Nationals. Japan OWNS the game, so there is no way they are getting less than 4. Thats a total of 12

19
12
31 so far.

There's still 26 Countries we haven't accounted for, so let's say each one of them gets 1 invite.

31
26
57

That means there's still 5 left. Some have to go to the grinder (minimum 2), so that leaves us with 3. Three invites yet to be accounted for.

Just take a look at some of those numbers, and tell me this makes sense. You can't; can you? Nope. I thought not.

Can't we just agree that it sucks, instead of punching all the worthless numbers?

This means less people will go to worlds, less people will want to play, less money for PUI/Nintendo, less interest in the game, etc.

The only things this makes more of is:

-Upset players
-Possiblity for the pokemon TCG to go under.

I got to agree with Bullados here. People, you are hilarious. If whining was a profession, you'd all be talking as millionaires!

Can I get a 'too bad' right here?

You all seem to be talking about playing Pokémon as something you're doing for profit. It's a GAME people. The game should have a fun element intrinsically; and if that doesn't appeal to you, but the prizes do, then I'd love this decision even more for giving you the incentive to leave this game. Of course the prizes may be seen as an incentive to play this game (it also is for me, no doubt) but if it is the only one that makes you continue playing it, I hope it will be 'so long' for you, the sooner the better.

Oh and @ Moss and all the American nationalists out there: saying that America>worlds because it won the masters division twice is like arguing (hypothetically) that Dunsparce Beatdown is the best deck because it won even while 80% of the metagame field was made up by it. Agreeing with this shows you have no knowledge of TCG games at all =/ And if you're doubting my qualities, I've played Pro Circuit tournaments (and VS System is arguably the hardest competitive card game out there), and thus not only high level Pokémon but also other card games.

Last question: how many times has the imminent demise of the Pokémon TCG been forecasted, again?

probably not. Why? well two reason spring to mind.

1) The opportunities for players outside the continetal USA looks so much better this year.

2) Even accepting Moss's assertion that the USA players are so much better that they would qualify anywhere else. The situation in the rest of the world is that if you are unlucky enough to have two or more world class players in the same national outside the USA then one of them isn't going to go! (remember that Yamato didn't qualify last year. Being good, even world class, isn't enough outside the USA.)

==============================

The very flat K value structure is interesting. It means that a near miss at the big nationals tournament doesn't result in a rating that trumps all the other smaller tournaments. Also that those players who are able to make it to lots of large tournaments will have the best chance at an invite. And maybe that one poor performance at one of those events wont destroy your chances either.

You Gotta play in lots of big tournaments this year.

[idle thoughts:team play can probably get a player to worlds this year. We probably need to resurect the old discussion about collusion. ]

This is not very surprising.

The situation in the USA just got the same as it has been in all other countries all the time. Things are evened out throughout the world. However, the American players have lost a lot considering what they had until now. They've been used to having this superior situation through this game's 6 year long American history, so I don't blame everyone who gets disappointed and upset.

But basically, what the situation is like in the USA now is the same as it has been in all other countries for the past 5 World Championships (yes, I count/treat the International STSs as World Championships, as anyone should): Worlds is very, very hard to get to.

This is all I have to say now. I could start discussing things like how the USA has a bigger population than other areas, how it has more players, or discuss whether the American players are the best or not, but it would end up with nothing constructive and just once again boil down to the fact that we (INTL Pokémon players) gained something while Americans lost something, and that American players have been spoiled with a luxurious system of easy-to-get World travel awards and now have the right to be disappointed.

Right to be disappointed, but no right to say that PUI is insane and no reason to quit the game. Anyone who quits now is really lame. If you, as a reader of this reply, are planning to quit, please at least leave out the sentimental "I'm quitting" post, because it will embarass you so much in a few months when your opponent at Nationals enquires you about it.

I think Moss has given a very interesting and well-written reply to this post and that it's not right to paint his second reply black in this way. "Qualifying anywhere else" is not what Moss wanted to say if I read his reply right. The point here is more that if you have a gigantic country like the USA, with 300 million citizens, you'll have to be an extremely good player to climb all the way up to the very small "elite" level, the very top of the iceberg. If you're on top in a country with 300 million people, and the top (in your age group) consists of let's say 30 people, it would be easier to move to a country like Norway where the population is 4.5 million and the number of players at that level is maybe 1 or 2.

Tego I wasn't trying to paint Moss's reply as black. I agree that the USA has many even perhaps most of the worlds top players. Moss is an exceptionally good player. Because there are ratings based invites this year may be the first year that living outside the USA might offer more opportunity for a world class USA player. But he would still need to be selective about which country he moved to. The wrong choice and you could easily be top dog in a country with so little OP that the ratings invite isn't achievable and worse doesn't sponsor a player to worlds. If two top USA players move out and make the same country choice then one of them wont get a foreign Nationals based invite. its fine being the only big fish in a small pond untill a second big fish arrives.

I must have missed Moss's earlier post so I'll have to go and check...

Okay found it and did read it earlier.... playing in a highly competative area is only bad if there are few players or few tournaments. You need lots of well attended tournaments to push your rating through the roof.

I don't even get why people would defend PUI's decision. Let's see what could happen:

A) We ask for more invites/trips to worlds and we get them.
B) We ask for more invites/trips to worlds and we don't get them.
C) We don't ask for anything more and are content to get cut backs, and the status quo remains.

How is it ever advantageous to not ask for more trips? We aren't PUI. We are their customers, the players. We don't have to figure out how to make giving us more invites feasible. We simply tell the business what we want and (assuming the customer IS always right!) we either get it or we don't. But if we don't tell them what we want, we aren't going to get more.

Why would it ever be in one's best interests to be content with getting less? Why not protest and demand more? We either get what we ask for or keep what we have, which is significantly higher EV than just being content with what we have. PUI comes here for a good reason. Well, I'm sure they've made some friendships, but more importantly it is a great interface for hearing what the customer is thinking. "Well we cut their trips and Pokemom managed to get them all cooled down about it, so if we cut more in the future, it'll probably be the same routine with them getting a little upset at first and then accepting it." We can't have that! If you want to play at Worlds and are feeling hopeless now, tell PUI about it! Tell them that Worlds, not Nationals, is the biggest event of the year. Tell them that every player should have a reasonable chance to become World champion, not just the ones that play every single weekend for the next nine months. Tell them that you want your chance to compete on the World's biggest stage! Tell them that Pokemon is your favorite pastime, one you've spent years and countless hours playing, and you want to be able to play in it's most important, and most fun tournament!

I'm not advocating a strike, but my God if you think you should have more, or at least keep what you've got, tell PUI that! I'm sure they're listening! Nothing may happen this year, next year, or ever, but I don't see how it's possible that something will happen unless PUI knows that being able to play at Worlds is something extremely important to us as players.
